before you trash Tom Cruise, read this:
While filming (War of the Worlds) nearby, Tom Cruise along with a 20 member entourage including Steven Spielberg visited a Lexington, Virginia, Dairy Queen. Cruise saw a jar on the counter with a photo of Ashley Flint and her story. Flint was in a go-cart accident a few months earlier, leaving her family with a mountain of hospital bills. Cruise put $5000 cash into the jar.

1. Wow! What a mensch! Maimonides had a scale of charity giving and
giving anonymously was among the highest forms of charity. That way the receiver is not shamed.

2. sure, giving anonymously is definitely the best
but gotta give credit where credit is due. What he did is certianly commendable.

those people have a ton of hospital bills to go through, and 5000 dollars go a long way. (probably not such a long way anymore...x()

but even so. tom cruise is a right good guy by my opinion.

on edit: heh, i thought the same thing as pres did. :dunce:

12. Yes, it is, indeed, better
to give anonymously. The problem is, how do you do that in the situation described when you're Tom Cruise, one of the most recognizable faces in the world?

7. He does stuff like this all the time
He's a good guy. I think he's grown quite a bit as an actor, too. It used to be that I couldn't stand him, but he's been quite good in his last few movies, and I have to credit him for always choosing interesting projects.

8. good for him
I agree that he has grown and he has worked to grow. He really does try to choose interesting projects, doesn't he? He was born with a pretty face rather than talent but instead of just riding the face he is trying to stretch himself. Gotta admire that. Compare that with someone like Arnie who never even bothered to get decent voice lessons to lose/vary the accent. Cruise would have money at this point no matter what he did but he really does try.

Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 10:09 PM by bushwentawol
Start a foundation that woul anonymously pay the hospital bills of sick children. But I'd rather there be no need for something like this, ie: guaranteed health coverage like the rest of the civilized world.
