GREAT NEWS: They found a perfect bone marrow donor for my Dad!!
....got the news monday mornin' before we buried my mammaw...they found a 100% match from a stranger no less AND two backups that're only a point from bein' perfect. The only bad thing is now his insurance co. wants to weigh in and nitpick as to whether or not they wanna pay for it...BUT this is the BEST NEWS we've had in over two years since he was diagnosed with Leukemia. :bounce:

And another tid bit of potential good news for me personally...I proposed an idea to my Dad's *son he never had* who's quite wealthy and has an investment business and he is interested in possibly investing in my idea and maybe I'll get to be a big part in makin' it happen....a few weeks ago a business man in my town bought the empty super K-mart building here and wants to sell spaces for like a mini mall...so my idea was to rent the center section of it and open an ice skating rink as we've never had one in my town...the city had a minor league hockey team and had the equipment to turn our civic center into an ice rink at one time...but it went belly up...they would let people skate on the rink when the team was outta town...so I thought it'd be a good idea to give the kids something new to do around here and center a rink inside this building and have shops around it to give parents something to do while their kids skate....he's supposed to call me so we can discuss this further...I hate to get my hopes up but hell if I could just drive the Zamboni I'd be happy to have a damn JOB at least...sigh. *fingers crossed* :)

12. I'm so relieved...his last doctor said he wasn't a candidate...
....they moved back here and I talked to his new doctor and asked just WHY he wasn't a candidate and he got the ball rollin' on a transplant as soon as my dad went back into remission this last time...after I told him *I* wanted everything that could be done to be done...sigh..but he listened and hopefully this will be exactly what he needs to be cured. :hi:

With all the minor league hockey in LA now, I'm sure there is a market for an ice-skating rink.

81. Thank you for the link.....
....he's been sick for over 2 years now and dreads all that the transplant entails...especially since his last chemo and recent remission...but eventhough it's going to be extremely difficult to endure and an even longer stint in the hospital with a transplant..he's still willing to fight hard to try and stay around for awhile longer for my mom and the rest of our family....just hopin' the insurance will cover it...thanks!! :hi:

82. Well... you see.... much of the damage done by almost all diseases is done
by oxidative stress... now before I get labeled an antioxidant freak.. just look at these papers from the NIH that explains how certain "special" antioxidants help protect against disease... I believe Alpha Lipoic Acid was listed on the link I put up as an adjunct therapy... here is why.

Differential effects of the antioxidant alpha-lipoic acid on the proliferation of mitogen-stimulated peripheral blood lymphocytes and leukaemic T cells.

Pack RA, Hardy K, Madigan MC, Hunt NH.

Department of Pathology, University of Sydney, NSW 2006, Sydney, Australia.

The effects of the antioxidant alpha-lipoic acid (LA) on the proliferation of mitogen-stimulated human peripheral blood lymphocytes (HPBL) were investigated in comparison to its effects on the proliferation of two leukaemic T cell lines, Jurkat and CCRF-CEM. At low mM concentrations, LA inhibited in a dose-dependent manner DNA synthesis of HPBL stimulated with either phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) in combination with ionomycin (IoM), or phytohaemagglutinin (PHA). At similar concentrations, LA inhibited the proliferation of Jurkat and CCRF-CEM cells. However, LA was preferentially cytotoxic to the leukaemic cell lines. The selective toxicity of LA to Jurkat cells was shown by electron microscopy (EM) to be due to the induction of apoptosis. Furthermore, LA had different effects on the secretion of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and steady-state levels of IL-2 mRNA in mitogen-stimulated HPBL depending on the mitogens used. LA dramatically increased the induction of IL-2 mRNA and IL-2 protein secretion in PMA/IoM-stimulated HPBL, whereas it inhibited these in HPBL stimulated with PHA. The differential effects of LA on normal and leukaemic T lymphocytes may indicate a new route towards development of therapeutic agents.

Induction of the differentiation of HL-60 promyelocytic leukemia cells by vitamin E and other antioxidants in combination with low levels of vitamin D3: possible relationship to NF-kappaB.

Sokoloski JA, Hodnick WF, Mayne ST, Cinquina C, Kim CS, Sartorelli AC.

Department of Pharmacology, Cancer Center, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT 06520, USA.

Epidemiological studies have provided evidence that diets rich in antioxidant nutrients may reduce the risk of cancer. To evaluate the possibility that dietary phytochemicals with antioxidant potential would create an environment capable of affecting the differentiation of HL-60 leukemia cells, we measured the effects of vitamin E and other dietary antioxidants on the differentiation produced by low levels of vitamin D3 and analogs thereof. Vitamin E succinate and other antioxidant compounds (ie butylated hydroxyanisole, beta-carotene and lipoic acid) used alone had no significant effect on the differentiation of HL-60 cells; however, these agents markedly increased the differentiation produced by vitamin D3. Previous studies from this laboratory have shown that a sequence-specific antisense phosphorothioate oligonucleotide to the Rel A subunit of NF-kappaB enhanced the differentiation of HL-60 cells produced by several inducing agents. Consistent with these observations, vitamin E succinate caused a marked reduction in the nuclear content of NF-kappaB both in the presence and absence of vitamin D3. These findings suggest that NF-kappaB may be a factor in regulating the differentiation of myeloid leukemia cells. The results also indicate that combinations of vitamin D3 and analogs thereof with dietary antioxidants may be useful in overcoming the differentiation block present in acute promyelocytic leukemia cells.

85. Again...I will definitely pass this information along....
....very interesting that it's not more well known since it seems as if it's quite beneficial...but that is how our healthcare system works these days...if it's not pharmacutical then it's unknown and not to be trusted..eventhough we are seeing how untrustworthy they're becoming every day now...thanks again for giving me this information. :hi:

ocurring in your body. You create them from glucose and perhaps sucrose everyday all day. It is a rather large metabolic strain to produce them, and then if you are stressed, bacterially/virally challenged, genetically "imperfect", etc, it can be an impossibility to produce them in sufficient quantities to have good and proper cell to cell communication. I hope you will find your way to understanding their importance IN VIRTUALLY ALL DISEASE PROCESSES.

91. I've been in the Unrelated Bone Marrow donor registry for years ...
A couple of people I know have gotten "the call", and judging by how they felt, you can bet that the excitement is just as high on that end!

Good luck to your dad -- but with the improvement in techniques and anti-rejection drugs, the odds sound pretty good even if you have to go with one of the kinda-close matches (4 or 5 out of 6 factors?).
