Taking the plunge and getting an iPod. Recommendations please
Finally getting one but there's a lot of confusing choices. I like the iPod minis but I can't find some basic info. The 4Gb iPod minis hold "1000 songs," which is meaningless to me. I like classical music which tends to be much longer so I'd like to know how many hours of music one holds. Also, the iPod minis don't use a harddrive, is that right? If I'm getting a mini I don't want a harddrive.

I want to go with iPod rather than a competitor, such as Dell for a lot of different reasons. As far as iPods go, is there any reason to wait a little bit. Are they going to come out with something new and better soon?

7. 66 hours?
Is my math right? That's pretty impressive and definitely way more than I would ever need. Taking a close look at some specs I found (which still didn't give me the 4 minutes song info you helpfully provided) it looks like it DOES have a harddrive. I was thinking something flash-based instead of disk-based would give it more stability, like in case I dropped it or something. Maybe I will look at that Dell job everybody's raving about. Still, I REALLY love the look of iTunes.com. What to do.

10. a co-worker got a dell for x-mas
she HATED IT. returned it in a few days. she said it was big, bulky, and not at all user friendly, and quite hard to get the songs onto.

I got the I-pod for Hanukkah. I love it. its 20gb. it sounds wonderful. User friendly, has games for my subway rides...its a great thing...

your math is right. its a bit over 66 hours off music... and i find my ipod gives me no real troubles, and i have dropped it several times

11. No crappy Dell knock-off iPod for you!
Don't waste your money. I owned an iPod mini for 3 months and had no problems with it skipping, even when I brought it to the gym with me on the treadmill.

Don't let the fact that its hard drive based turn you off, there are literally no problems when it comes to the iPod mini and skip problems for what most people will use it for.

Also, flash-based mp3 players are a total rip-off when it comes to cost per MB or GB when compared to the iPod.

8. Not true...
All lithium-based rechargeable batteries will eventually lose the ability to hold a charge, the iPod is no different, but that likely won't happen for a year to two years down the road.

Also, Apple offers a battery replacement service for $99, and if that doesn't meet your approval, there are numerous websites out there which sell "do-it-yourself" battery replacement kits for iPods, most under $50.

Ratty, get the iPod, you'll be incredibly happy that you did. Don't let people guilt trip you.

4. If you like classical music, you should NOT get the mini
you should get the new 40GB one. Not much bigger, but a LOT more space. 4000 minutes on the mini interprets to about 22 operas (average length of 3 hours).

5. The iPod mini holds 1,000 songs in 128-Kbps format...
with an average length of 4 minutes.

But a word of advice: Don't buy an iPod mini right now.

The iPod mini hasn't been updated since it was introduced last year and is prime for an update, and rumours have it coming before the end of the month. Its capacity will likely be bumped up from 4GB to 5GB. Just a word of advice. :) I wouldn't buy one, like, tomorrow. :P

Now that's the kind of info I was looking for. Thanks for the heads up!

12. I have a 40 GB iPod that is about 31.75GB filled, alot of that is
airamericaradio shows. iTunes tells me that that will last 74.4 days. My Brother & Sister in law each have an iPodmini. They mostly listen to Classical music so they pick & choose the songs they put on.
:hi:
