Poll question: Demons....real or bullshit?
Okay....my cousin was in town for my mammaw's funeral and she was telling me that she broke her leg because the house she lived in a few years ago was possessed by demons because it was previously owned by a lesbian buddhist....also her adopted son needed to be exorcised because of all the demons that control him....SIGH...see she and her husband decided to adopt him from her little sister who was young and unattached...after having a couple kids of their own they decided he was too much trouble and sent him back to live with his real mom eventhough she was recently divorced with another son she coudn't afford to take care of either....and now the poor boy is back with them and all fucked up in the head because he KNOWS he's not wanted by anyone in their family...soooooo she's blamin' all his problems on DEMONS because she was recently taught *spiritual warfare* in some church group.

SOOOOO...are demons real and jump into us and make us do BAAAAD things...or is it just BULLSHIT and used to excuse ones own personal choices and behavior?

I believe the latter to be true...what says YOU?

But do we really need Cthulhu on this one? I would much rather (being basically a nice guy) leave him dreaming in deep R'lyeh.

10. Carl Sagan's "Demon-Haunted World"
Edited on Wed Feb-16-05 10:17 PM by ZombyWoof
One of the best books ever.

Although I am fond of demons, it is because they are mythological creatures, which means it is no more harmful to like them than it is the way children like unicorns, lol.

Give me the rundown on Demon Haunted World, I may check it out. My guess is that it is along the lines of explaining dogmas, am I correct?

25. Concentrates heavily on "alien abductions."
It's been a few years since I've read it, but that's what I recall as the main focus - he explores the whole "alien abduction" phenomenon from the standpoint of natural physical effects that people have been experiencing for centuries, and just explained it differently throughout the years (vampires, witches, etc.). This he uses as a springboard to to compare real science with pseudoscience - how people are fascinated with pseudoscience (ghosts, demons, angels, etc.), thinking it's science, and if they knew more about the real thing, they'd be just as captivated, if not more so.

It's long been my opinion that everyone who considers themselves educated, should have read this book. Even if your evaluation of what's a valid phenomenon isn't quite as strict as Sagan's, it's still a must-read book.

38. I read an article about "alien abductions" mostly being
related to sleep paralysis. It was really a pretty interesting article that went into earlier times, before all the interest in aliens, people had experiences with the "sleep hag". People are half asleep, half awake, with their mind actually in a dream state. I have had an experience similar, but with me I thought it was big spiders coming after me, and it took a while for me to wake up and realize that it really was only a dream. It is possible that the article may have been an excerpt from this book, based on your description.

The human mind is truly amazing.

13. Poor kid...
they let just anybody adopt now, eh.

I suppose some think this is better than those demonic lesbians who want to adopt.

Buddhists, no less. Lotsa demons following Buddhists around.

Anyway, while this is pure bullshit, I do personally know someone who attended a Roman Catholic exorcism while he was in the seminary. They don't do exorcisms every day, and the local bishop must be convinced it's a good idea, which is not easy to do. Psychiatrists are often brought in and normal counseling is done first.

To this day, he's still not sure what happened then, but it was very strange. Things happened. Very strange things happened.

These people are just terrifyingly ignorant and have no idea what they are messing with. Demons my ass, but the things that go on while messing with this kid's head are scarier than any demon that might be out there.

15. There is a real demon called a "neurotransmitter"
That and human nature. People are weird, people are crazy.

Spiritual warfare is another excuse for people to absolve themselves of responsibility for their own actions, or a failure to recognize reality.

23. No way
The only "demons" that exist are emotional troubles stemming from being unloved in this case. I don't believe in any demons as in creatures from Hell entering a person's body. I believe that "civilization", as some like to call it, isn't so civilized as people claim it is. Society is so screwed up that people would rather see a kid have no kind of stability or love in their life than get adopted by a loving gay couple who would provide the kid with those very basic needs. That sucks. I feel for the kid.

28. I read your post, and thought....
Man, she's GOTTA be from Louisiana...LOL..I hail from the CenLa area myself and have known many people like those you describe above. Of course, it's Bullshit and you've just got to consider the source. Although Southern stereotypes regarding our stupidity or ignorance chap my ass,(that is,the generalization of it)the fact remains that there is a reason for their existence. It really is amazing to me how so many people from this part of the world still blame their lack of parenting skills (or anything else) on such nonsense. I suppose it's much easier to conjure up demons from hell to explain away the fact that you're a shitty parent, or just 'ate up with the dumb ass'.

It pretty much explains why the Deep South is made up of so many Red States, doesn't it? (Hope that didn't offend anybody from the South...I know there are a lot of us here who live in Southern Red States...but, obviously, we free thinkers are definitely in the minority!)
