Poll question: Die Toten Hosen: FC Bayern
A song about the Yankees of Bundesliga soccer (except that NY is a cool city, while Munich is a strong case against the whole idea of cities)

http://www.jans-site.net/dth_vid07.html

There isn't much on this world
Which really is certain
Some say "Love"
Maybe that's true.
And then there always is god,
if one has nobody else.
Some don't believe in anything,
life has thoughened them up.
So much can happen.
So much can occur.
Just one thing is one hundred percent certain:
No way in hell we would ever join the FC Bayern!

I mean, if I was 20.
And super-talented
And Real Madrid had already asked.
Just as the boys from Manchester.
And I had played for Germany
And was motivated.
And Uli Höneß would stand on my door mat
I wouldn't open the door.
Would be totally out of question
to allow people like the Bayern to spoil my character!!

Chorus:
We would never join the FC Bayern München
We would never join the FC Bayern München

Just to make one thing clear,
just so that you get it right.

Bridge:
We have nothing against Munich
We would just never join the FC Bayern.
(Instrumentalsolo)

Does it really have to be?
Isn't life nice enough?
To throw oneself away
and join the FC Bayern.

Chorus

What kind of parents does one need to have,
to be so rotten
as to sign a contract
with such a Scheißverein.

Chorus 2:

We would never join the FC Bayern München
(Never join the Sheiss-Bavarians)
We would never join the FC Bayern München
(Never join the Sheiss-Bavarians)

Repeat Chorus 2

Bavarian voice, commenting the song : this filth will be the ruin of civilization

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Es gibt nicht viel auf dieser Welt
Woran man sich halten kann.
Manche sagen "die Liebe"!
Vielleicht ist da was dran.
Und es bleibt ja immer noch Gott,
Wenn man sonst niemand hat.
And're glauben an gar nichts,

Und Uli Höneß würde bei mir auf der Matte stehen;

Damit man uns richtig versteht.

Bridge:
Wir haben nichts gegen München,
Wir würden nur nie zu den Bayern gehen

(Instrumentalsolo)

Muss denn sowas wirklich sein,
Ist das Leben nicht viel zu schön,
Sich selber so wegzuschmeißen
Und zum FC Bayern zu gehen?

Chorus

Was für Eltern muss man haben
Um so verdorben zu sein,
Einen Vertrag zu unterschreiben
Bei diesem Scheißverein??

Chorus 2:

Wir würden nie zum FC Bayern München gehen!
(Niemals zu den Bayern geh'n)
Wir würden nie zum Fc Bayern München gehen!
(Nie zu den Scheiß-Bayern gehn)

Repeat Chorus 2

5. Oh quite the contrary
They are maybe a tad too German for my taste ;-) . In this case I mean the American, i.e. southern, impression of Germany, meaning Lederhosen, Gemütlich and many days off, while I am in the northern tradition.

In part it is just the dislike for clubs with too much money and bought success.

The special dislike for the Bayern is, that they are not only one of the super-rich clubs (like Manchester, Madrid, ...), but also are lacking of any tradition. Upstarts without soul.
The dislike for them is pretty much infused during Elementary School: the kids who only care about winning, not about tradition, not about the local club, alway title themselves as "Bayern Fans". One quickly learns to associate the label with spineless jerks.

So, I guess hating them is as much a passion, as is loving them.

6. A play of words

"tote Hose", i.e. Dead Pant, means "it is boring here".

Oh: and probbaly the best old German Punk Band. (2nd Edit: they are even in the NYC MoMA - as a huge wall-to-wall photography).

7. Oh cool. I didn't know that.
I've got a book, Kel, that talks about "The German you never learned in school." It's called "Scheisse!" :-) And the author is billed as 'Gertrude Besserwisser'. Now, am I right in thinking 'besserwisser' is German for "know-it-all"?

But yeah, that's the word.

9. If I had thought about creating a German user name for DU, it
probably would have been "Zweiundvierzich" B-)

'Besserwisser' might not have made me as many friends. :-)

10. Wow!

I never dreamed I'd ever see Die Toten Hosen mentioned on DU. Isn't 'Ich Will Nicht' one of their tunes? Anyway, when I'm in Berlin (usually fairly frequenlty - we share an apartment on Fuggerstrasse, near KaDeWe) I always look forward to Euro MTV. Which make American MTV look worse than it already is.

We'll be looking for a house in the Falkensee area in the, hopefully, near future.

11. actually they are practically regulars
As to Euro MTV: it went the US MTV avenue. Nothing left worth watching.
To make matters worse, they also took over the competition (Viva).

Falkensee is a really nice spot - I prefer inner-city, but that's probably just me.

12. a couple of questions
One, are Die Toten Hosen quite popular in the German mainstream?

And also, is there a big rivalry between Berlin and Munich? I liked Munich when I visited it. And I know Bavaria is a very conservative province, but I thought Munich itself was supposed to be a pretty liberal city.

13. hmm
Yes, I'd say the Hosen can be considered Mainstream. At least since the second half of the 90s.

There is centuries old rivalry between Bavaria and Prussia (more on the Bavarian side - the Prussians didn't care much about it);
today it is continued by Munich and Berlin. I am not so sure, whatever or not I'd call Munich "liberal", but by Bavarian standards, it certainly is.
