1. Speaking only for myself, "Crusing" is a vile movie.
Edited on Mon Mar-14-05 10:20 AM by terrya
Not because of the leather world in which the film is placed...but because, once fucking again, that horrid stereotype "the homicidal, murderous homosexual" is trotted out. "Crusing" is a reprehensible piece of garbage. The one good thing about it was that it incited protests in the gay community for Hollywood to begin depicting gay and lesbian people in a more positive light.

3. They ran a disclaimer at the beginning of the film ...
I know that doesn't make it any better but they did acknowledge it's negative views.

16. I HATED Cruising...
I saw that before I came out when I was 17 and it scared the shit out of me.

I think the protests had a big effect on the editing of it. It was bad enough, but could have been much worse. What I really found offensive was the implication that Pacino becomes a murderer at the end after being exposed to the leather/SM community.

2. It's part of the 'uniform', dude.
It's a "leather" thing. Personally, I think they're stupid-looking too, but I used to live around the corner from a leather bar in SF, so I saw a lot of it.

8. The Eagle
Edited on Mon Mar-14-05 12:02 PM by Terran
Now called the Eagle Tavern (I lived on Bernice St., around the corner, from '87-'94). The Eagle Tavern is, from what I understand, specifically devoted to the biker scene (how authentically I don't know, probably not very much). Meeg, if you're a Bear, you want to check out The Lone Star, I believe! It's on Harrison, near 11th St., about two blocks from the Eagle.

On edit: "official bear of DU", eh? I might have to challenge you for that title, buddy!

19. Where, to the Eagle or the Lone Star?
Me I never liked the Eagle. I can't speak for it now, but back then, nothng but posers in leather drag and tired disco music many years after disco was long dead.

Now the Lone Star...oooooh boy!

was in SF for the week for an Apple conference. Got 2 evenings alone so I went there. Looks like I'll be there again this year, June 6-10.

12. Beer busts at The Eagle....
Sunday afternoon is THE day for The Eagle! Bears, leathermen, and just about everyone else is there, especially on a pretty SF day.

There are a couple of other good leather/bear bars -- I'll check with my friends to find out some good names for ya.

15. I used to go there sometimes.
I wasn't much of a barfly. But I always had fun at the Eagle. I'd say more but I'd get this thread locked.

20. Thanks
I've heard there are tns of bear-oriented venues now in SF. Maybe it was better when there was only one, but I'm not complaining.

26. More bear action in SF...
I just had a chat with my bear-buddy and he says that in addition to The Eagle and Lone Star, he could recommend Cinch on Polk at Sacramento and The Mix in the Castro, which is more a real neighborhood joint.

But...here's the fun one...the best place these days for bear action is in front of Starbuck's (aka Bearbuck's) on 18th at Castro! He said it is one hot locale, with bears for days hanging out on the sidewalk with a coffee in one hand and their phone number in the other.

27. LOl, that's kind of funny
Bears mobbing the Castro, which was once the preserve of Izod-shirted twinks and 50 year old men pretending to be twinks. Very cool!

22. LOL, I was just kidding!
It's so un-Bear-like, such competitiveness, doncha think??

Here's my gallery picture:

There used to be a second, slightly more risque picture there, but I see it's gone now.

My only Bear claim to fame: I was in "American Bear," Issue #58.
