Magazine gives peek at hidden history, attractions in region

But his magazine isn't limited to just remembering tragedies. While it has a historical focus, the 32-page periodical also contains information on travel destinations, unique businesses, and the music, taste and culture of the Ozarks. Features have included the War Eagle Mill near Rogers, Ark., and Jolly Mill near Pierce City, as well as the Cherokee Queen riverboat in Grove, Okla. There are stories on locomotives and country stores, and tidbits on area museums.

The first edition of The Ozarks Reader was published last fall, and of the 1,000 copies printed, 700 have been purchased, Jackson said. The second edition was published last month. There is little advertising, and color is limited to the cover, but Jackson said his aim is to keep commercialism out of the publication he designs on his home computer. While the majority of the sales are in Missouri, the publication also is being sold in Arkansas, Kansas and Oklahoma.
