2. actually, most of the older buildings are retrofitted and
damage is not as bad as would be expected.. Of course we all live with the little cracks in walls etc.:) I have some in my tile floors, I they just add "character":)

I haven't even felt a tiny quake here (in L.A.) in ages! I'm almost hoping for one. A little one.

4. Hi there, SoCalDem,
Great bunch of photos...That 1933 quake was one of the wake-up calls to SoCal to improve the building codes, if I recall the history correctly. Things are certainly better these days. My husband and I were lucky enough to build our dream house 3 years ago, and we haven't experienced any quakes since we moved in. I'd really like to have one (NOT a Richter 9, though!) so we can see how the house will move...I'm quite confident that it will come through well, though one never REALLY knows. But I'd like to see...Someday...!

6. I dread the big one we're expecting here in SF
It's going to be devastating. We expect to get through it ok since we're on granite, but the damage will still be bad. I know some people can't understand why people would want to live in a quake zone. All I can say is being able to live in SF is worth the risk.

7. Hey, LeftCoast,
I think I understand what you're saying...I always said (before we built our new home) that I wanted to live in SF after the big quake. I was only half joking...It is without exception one of the world's most beautiful cities. You just have to be ready for the quake, as much as you can be...and hope for the best, after that...

8. My Grandmother told me she was walking home from work when the quake..
Struck. She was in downtown L.A. and said that there was chunks of buildings falling everywhere. She did not mention anything about seeing anyone hurt, she just said that is was horrible.
