so I take 2 practice GRE exams
On one I score a 760 verbal - pretty much the academic speed of light. Go me!

On the second I score a 660 verbal - good but not as good as the other. Not lightspeed - maybe more like the speed of sound.

These tests were taken one day apart, higher score on the first one.

Damn - I feel like I don't know where I stand. Which score is more accurate?

1. I'm not sure how much the numbers mean
in the GRE.

When I took it, I got a 660 verbal, and though that's not great, it was in the top 90+% of the people who took the test when I did.

By comparison, my math (or whatever they call it) score was 620 or so, and it was in the 57th percentile.

Maybe I just took it the same time as a bunch of engineers, or something...

8.  This is the same
660 quantitative is nowhere near as impressive as a 660 verbal. I guess the non-native english speakers skew it that way.

2. That's a huge verbal score on either
the average score for an english major is 500 when I took it. Good for you. I could have sworn some of the word on the actual GRE were not even words. Good luck when you take the exam. Are you taking the computer based or paper based? From what I hear it makes a big difference.

I've got a quite a bit more work to do for that part.

This was the CD with the computer based test from ETS. It is odd taking it on a computer, but I'm used to it now.

4. fluctuations like that mean you screwed up the first couple of questions
on the second day. There first few questions on the CAT make the biggest difference.

7. Both scores are fine
of course higher is always nicer.

I took the GRE's a couple years ago and got 690 V 800 Q, the funny thing is that 690 got me a 97th percentile in the verbal, while a perfect in the quantitative yielded only a 92%. I guess 8% of the test takers get a perfect in the quantitative as well.

Where do you want to go

Aim high, they say.

;-)

It's for a history Ph.D - a fellowship.

On edit: Nice score, BTW. May I be as lucky/well prepared!
