My epic fantasy novel--
Edited on Mon Mar-21-05 09:50 PM by Technowitch
Thanks so much folks, for the great private feedback (and encouragement) for my fantasy novel manuscript. This has gotten me to take care of something I've been meaning to do, and that's been to post the first -three- opening chapters. (Previously, I'd had chapters 1 and 9 up.)

It's all available on my personal website HERE.

From the brief synopsis:

Prophecy's Door: The Wilder

In a place where magic was once known and mighty semi-sentient forests used to covered the land, both are mere shadows of what they once were. Into this comes a man—solder, then priest, and finally Excommunicate—seeking any means necessary to depose an evil monarch who has uncovered forbidden powers.

In another place, much closer to home, an autistic boy has stumbled upon a way to interact with the world around him, using the colors, lights, and patterns which until recently dwelt only within his own mind. Unfortunately, this discovery comes literally on the cusp of a terrorist nuclear holocaust, and only this boy, David Anthony Burke, and a few others touched by magic have any idea of the true implications.

This novel, complete and available for publisher consideration, is the first volume in a five-book epic fantasy series. In the spirit of Stephen Donaldson’s “Chronicles of Thomas Covenant,” Marion Zimmer Bradley's "Darkover" tales, and Robert Jordan’s “Wheel of Time” series--with a dash of Stephen King and Tom Clancy thrown in, this tale is just the opening episode in a saga spanning not only millennia, but also worlds.

Volumes in the Prophecy’s Door series:

  • The Wilder (completed)
  • The Monarch (in-progress)
  • The Technologist (in-progress)
  • The Necromancer
  • The Paladin

cheers,
-Technowitch

4. good luck
It's always been my dream to write an epic fantasy novel... but, for me it's just stayed in my dreams.

5. That's where mine was for far too many years
I'll offer you the same advice I was given: "So write it already!"

Seriously. You even START and you'll be one up on most of the people out there with great ideas -- but no execution whatsoever.

And thanks.

:)

24. with me, it's been so long
It's been so long that I've forgotten a lot of my good ideas. :-(

from the time I had a lot of my ideas in high school & college to now, when I'm 38, and having gone through marriage, divorce, another marriage and now fatherhood, my memory is not as good as it used to be, either.

8. Thanks, Revolutionary_Acts04
I'm hoping this year'll be the year.

I rewrote it from front to back, and am currently on a "edit & polish" pass. Much better beginning now, a killer ending -- and now I'm making sure the middle hooks everything together.

The other thing I'm doing is hitting the conventions and conferences like crazy, networking and pitching this thing everywhere.

I'm actually amazed at how much of the early process is actually one of marketing. As in, "Yes, this is really good stuff, here's the story, and here's why you should take a chance on me."

The 'magic' I'm working is one where at the least, I sell this volume and get a contract on the 2nd. Thanks for the well-wishes.

Into this comes a man—>>>solder,<<< then priest, and finally Excommunicate

14. That's actually how I meant it. Kinda choppy and parenthetical.
Blurbs need to be kinda punched-up, if ya know what I mean.

:) Thanks though, I'll reconsider how it might appear to other readers.

"Into this comes a man -- once a soldier, then a priest, and finally Excommunicate --"

Yeah, I think I like this version instead.

12. good luck, my friend mentioned the real battle for new writers...
exists and so is fought between 'the pickwick people' (paper publishers) and 'the adobe capture crowd' (silicon tower gang).

so-much-so, that he pushes his own works through the lib o'congress and publishes online...

mark twain self published

13. I'm sticking with mainstream press
My work is regular genre 'epic fantasy' fiction -- so it's not like I'm trying to sell something that hasn't been sold before (well, aside from the fact this is *my* work).

The reasons I feel the way I do are complex... but among them is one that I simply won't be satisfied until I can walk into a bookstore somewhere and actually see my stuff there.

Preferrably not in the 'remaindered' stacks...

Thanks for the well-wishes.

15. Ever read Sara Douglass' Wayfarer trilogy?
It sounds similar to your description, especially the sentient forests and the Excommunicate.

18. No, never heard of it. Any good?

I may have to be careful, if the notion is close though. I don't want to risk any sort of charge of plagiarism.

(edit for addition)
Just took a look. No, my tale is very different, no risk there.

22. Mine's a 'fantasy cross-over' novel, with a few semi-SF elements
Chief of which is nuclear terrorism (I kid you not).

But thanks for the encouragement, EstimatedProphet!
