Oh-oh. Surprise visit from son's "girlfriend"
OK. This is the situation. Our son is a 21-yr. old Marine back in Iraq for his second tour. (liberal Dem. and Marine--really). Appanretly he had a relationship with a Navy nurse a week before he left. He mentioned her to us when she called our house during his last visit the weekend before he left. No more mention of her. (My son is not really great boyfriend material right now. He's fairly promiscuous and hasn't yet shown the maturity for a real relationship.) In fact, he was out with another girl the weekend he was home.
Anyway, the nurse called up Thursday night and said she was headed to Atlanta with a friend for the weekend. My husband, caught off guard, invited her to stay with us.
(My son has not mentioned her during the few calls home he's made). So, the two young ladies came and stayed with us. They were pretty, polite, and, yes, bigtime Bush supporters. My son's twin sister, an anti-war activist and officer in the Young Democrats at her college was appalled. She can't believe her brother is seriously involved with this young woman. The nurse actually said: "If I go to Iraq, I'm going to shoot anything that doesn't speak English." We were gracious hosts. But we're mystified.

1. wait a second...
The nurse actually said: "If I go to Iraq, I'm going to shoot anything that doesn't speak English." We were gracious hosts. But we're mystified.

That does not compute. Nurse<->shoot, gun/nurse/not. Needle maybe. Perhaps she meant that she is going to innoculate all of the Iraqis?

6. Actually, her friend
is set to go to Iraq in August, attached to a Marine unit. I don't think the nurses are armed...as you say...with anything more than medical supplies. But I really have no idea what their training is. At any rate, that kind of "Bushian culture of life" mentality hardly seems appropriate for a nurse, does it?

It is just that my bullshit detector has been on high alert for the last oh 8-10 years or so, and I just Question Everything that is inconsistent.

2. Maybe it was just a casual relationship for your son, and she took it for

more than that?
Or she just figured that it would be ok to take advantage of your hospitality even if it was not a serious relationship.
I would guess that if they never discussed politics, it was not a very serious relationship.
If she is gone now, you may never see her again.

EDIT: She sure doesn't sound like a Nurse.

5. Hey, despite feminist pleas, it really isn't all that unusual....
for a young guy to run thru a whole lot of "coyote ugly, WTF was I thinkin?" women before he finds one easy on his mind and soul...I wouldn't worry too much....he's got bigger things to worry about in Iraq....undoubtably just a diversionary recreational pastime.....

8. I'm not really following how...
"a relationship with a Navy nurse a week before he left" constitutes them being "seriously involved." I think RIM nailed it in #4 (sorry). :-) I'm just somewhat relieved to hear there is actually a liberal Dem Marine. I just hope he's safe - on all fronts.

10. Since the Marines reflect their society...

...it doesn't surprise me a bit.

I was a liberal Dem during my 6 years in the Marines. Also an atheist.

And I've had a lot of fun recently posting this quote:

"I believe that if we had, and would, keep our dirty, bloody, dollar-crooked fingers out of the business of these nations so full of depressed, exploited people, they will arrive at a solution of their own. One that they design and want, one that they fight and work for.

And if, unfortunately, their revolution must be of the violent type because the "haves" refused to share with the "have nots" by any peaceful method, at least what they get will be their own, and not the American style, which they don’t want and above all don’t want crammed down their throats by Americans."

That's a 1966 quote from Gen. David Shoup, USMC. Medal Of Honor winner, Okinawa. Commandant of the Marine Corps, 1959-63.

Known as JFK's favorite general, but resigned his commission in 1963. By then Shoup was already saying things like: "All of Vietnam is not worth the life of one single American."

11. At last. A very reputable source
confirms my son's liberal (yet Marine) status. People are skeptical. Apparently, you can't be a Marine and a liberal. Although, you can. You're proof. My son is proof. And who knows how many others? My son says he's not alone. But he's not liable to get chosen for any question/answer sessions with Rummy.

9. I think you should warn your son.
It takes a lot of gall to call total strangers, manuever an invite, then insult your host's politics, and threaten violence to anyone who doesn't speak your language. How crass. Sounds like she might have been president of her high school's Future Stalkers club.
