My cat Lace is in labor...
Poor girl is as big as a house, and her nesting and mothering instincts kicked into high gear today, she started carrying around kittens from a litter I had a month ago :-)

update: she just went into her birthing cage, (knew she was close when she started swatting at my legs, new babies sometime tonite) :-)

1. I only had Mia for two weeks before she went into labor.
She never took to any of the birthing places that I set up for her. She went into labor under an endtable in the living room. I moved her into the maternity closet I had set up. The next day she moved them back under the table.

9. Good luck with the new arrivals!
I know a lady who used to breed Himalayans also. They're beautiful cats.

10. My adopted stray is ready to pop
so I am glad to see this thread, never having been through this before.

She turned up pregnant, so I have no idea about what time she's due--but I suspect it's very, very soon. She is huge , and has been sleeping for hours at a time the past several days.

How will I know when she's in labor? Does a cat's milk come in before they kittens are born? Does their water break, like a human? I'm completely clueless about this, but I want to be ready. I've read about what I should do during and after the birth, but I want to be on the lookout.

11. My cats are all different,
Their milk usually comes in before having the babes. And all my girls dont seem to be hungry the day they go into labor, nor do they drink alot. But all of them look for a special spot usually in a corner or under something. You may notice some spotting of blood, and pacing and panting. I have birthing cages, to keep them in one area, especially when it is their first litter. They dont know what is going on and tend to walk around and howl with the babe dragging behind. If you notice she is having trouble or the babes are coming faster then she has time to clean them up, give her a hand, if the sack isnt broke, break it around the babes mouth so they can breath, dont want them to sufficate, also if she hasnt chewed the cord rip the cord about an inch from the belly, DONT cut it (it heals better being ripped like when the mom chews it, cutting can lead to bleeding). A box will work just fine for a birthing bed, line it with old white sheets or I use under pads (the blue pads they use in the hospitals on beds, they are great and easy clean up). All my girls love to be talked to while in labor and have their bellys rubbed. Good luck and hope to see some pics :-)
