I'd love to know your hobbies.
So many intersting folks here in our forum-you can learn a lot about a person from their interests.

I am a compulsive hobbiest-I tend to get really heavy into a hobby for a year or so and then move on to somthing completely different.

Right now I am collecting vinyl LPs & 45s in the MONO format- mostly 60's psychedelia, garage & bubblegum.

What are yer hobbies?

10. How did you learn origami?
I'd lovelovelove to learn how to make paper cranes! My problem is that it's difficult for me to get English-language books, especially on technical stuff like art techniques, where I live. But if you learned origami from a book and can recommend one, I'll "order" it from my mom in the states.

14. is Wiley pictured in the Pets Forum?
If so, I'd like to see him.

Your hobbies are similar to mine. I like gardening and in particular, building hardscapes. My husband and I have built pergolas, arbors, trellises, cold frames, and solar beds. Now I'm building a long--very long--path through my front garden out of bricks. My husband is in the gourmet food and wine field so he is an excellent chef. I raise all the new and interesting strains of vegetables and he makes up very tasty dishes with them.

We also like to build things that our cats Greenlee and Bitsey enjoy. They have a cat condo where they can go out an enclosure off a window and watch the birds and squirrels. We are also building a "skywalk" from the house to the fenced-in garden/pool area. That way they can go in and out as they feel like it.

I like to restore old buildings, too. Right now I am restoring a townhouse. It's only 50 or 60 years old but I'm updating the kitchen and fixtures. It's fun choosing the doorknobs, lighting, etc.

15. Here's Ginger . . .
I'm not sure which cat you saw in the Pets Forum, as I've also posted a photo of my sister-in-law's cat, who is my cat's ever hungry brother. Here's Ginger (aka "The Wiley and Excellent Cat named Ginger) stretched out beside our koi pond last summer:

My husband also is the gourmet in our family, and he's a better gardener than I am, too. I'd love to have your construction and restoration skills, because I think the lack of a "cat condo" might be the very things our boy, Ginger, needs.

Also, in mentioning your Greenlee and Bitsey, you've reminded me that Ginger and I are longing for another cat. Do you know anything about bengal cats?

21. bird watching
A few years ago I took a course at a local college on "museum bird identification". Planting bird friendly flowers and trees has become part of my hobby. Being a birder is a hobby that can be very time consuming without being expensive, which I consider a bonus.

One of my favorite places to visit is Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina. It was the first public sculpture garden in America. There are over 500 works done by American sculptors displayed in a carefully manicured setting.

I can spend days wandering through botanical gardens without ever becoming bored because there's always something fascinating in the outdoor displays. It's quiet, peaceful and usually full of birds.

22. More than a hobby: I collect Navajo weavings, Hopi katsinas, Zuni fetishes
and Acoma pottery -- mostly Southwestern Native American crafts and art. I am so involved in this that to call it a hobby seems to denigrate it. Here's one of my katsinas -- the Mocking Katsina -- by a favorite Hopi carver, Fred Ross:

I also have a collection of super-rare orange-crate labels. And I mean super-rare. A recent acquisition:

I write short fiction.

I read anything, but gravitate mostly to mysteries, true crime, biographies, entertainment reference and horror (a la Stephen King).

It's like a religous holiday around my house. I don't have a Derby horse yet. All my earlier picks are off the trail except Rockport Harbor ( A son of Unbridled's Song ).

I'll have to wait for the Arkansas Derby and the Blue Grass tomorrow before I make up my mind. Bellamy Road did look good in the Wood Memorial last weekend.

Rocky's in next week in the Coolmore Lexington.

Question for the pedigree experts: In your opinion what sire made a bigger impact on the breed, Native Dancer or Nasrullah?

30. I seem to be a lonely jock in
an arty crowd.

I am an avid skier I ski an average of 50 times per year--and take several ski trips--both Winter and Summer (my next summer ski trip will be in August--to Chile).

When I am not on the slopes I hang at the ice rink where I play hockey.

I also like mountain biking, rollar blading, running, and swimming (I am training to swim across the English Channel--a dream of mine!). I am an instructor at the local aquatic center and in the summer I teach and participate in rowing, jet skiing, waterskiing/wakboarding, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, boating education, and canoeing. I love paragliding, it is one of my favorite vacation activities.

I travel--but usually only either for work or to enjoy a sporting activity. I have little interest in sightseeing--museums etc.

My girlfriend likes horses--so I go horsebackriding with her occasionally (although I prefer other sports). We also go to restaurants together and go out occasionally to see movies and shows.

Activities I like around the house--hanging and playing the piano (yes I do!), just chilling and watching t.v., and occasionally experimenting in the kitchen. I also like cruising the internet (s) hee hee hee and reading about what is up.

It is a full life.

40. A couple of cool rivers here in MN/WI
Nothing spectacular (like you have in Alaska) but enough to have fun. My favorite is a little river about twenty miles from where I live called the Vermillion--the runs is only about a half mile long, but it's got a cool slide/waterfall called triple drop where you lose about 20 feet of elevation in about 30 yards. This includes a seven or eight foot fall. When the flow gets to about 300 cubic feet per second (the river averages about eighty) the features get pretty muscular.

No doubt about it, it's the bomb diggity! :hi: :toast:

Here's a local whitewater club's website where you can follow the links and see what the local rivers have to offer!

I collect Nascar diecast. At last count I have 1,077 of them. Most of the fun is in finding the hard to get pieces. I display most of my collection in 1 room. I started building model cars and planes when I was a kid and eventually moved to Nascar diecast because I enjoy racing so much. My wife and I go to Broadway shows in NYC every so often and will be seeing La Cage aux Folles next month. Have seen alot of very good shows over the years such as Rent,Chicago(with Bebe Neuwirth) Annie Get Your Gun (Bernadette Peters and Tom Wopat),Kiss Me Kate,Ragtime Les Misérables and A Funny Thing Happen on the Way to the Forum with Nathan Lane. Musical theater and southern based racing, what could be more diverse then that?

Sure, they're all fakes -- but I've learned a lot over the past decade about historical authenticity vs. newer SCA-influenced combat designs, and what to look for (and specifically, what NOT to get, no matter how low the price) if you see something cool in a shop or on eBay.

They used to go for more than $200 (though prices have fallen recently since there's such a glut of them on the market -- cheap copies of cheap copies, basically). Still, it's possible to get something way better for the same price or less.

Not only is the helmet shape wrong, compared to all known archaeological finds (for example, the neckguard didn't come to a point, and wasn't dished like that) -- but most re-enactment groups have banned them because they cannot even be modified to look more authentic. It's not unheard of for the "authenticity fanatics" to disassemble store-bought replicas and rebuild them in their own workshops, but there are just so many things wrong with the design (for example, the curvy "eyebrows" on top are brazed on when they should be embossed) that even they have given up. The flaws can't be concealed, and removing them would basically trash the helmet.

( from www.pitt.edu/~englit/ syllabus0643.htm )

Funny thing is, Garry Trudeau did a pretty good rendition of one in his early cartoons of Bush in "imperial" mode -- right down to the metal crest-holder (they didn't make them like that) and the pointy convex neckguard. In that case, it's a perfect fit -- it's just the kind of thing that Dubya would get for himself if he were into this (a former history student but not known for doing his homework).

Here are some more hints on how to avoid getting ripped off when looking for Roman stuff -- the guy who runs this site is a scholar/re-enactment expert in Virginia who's been at this for decades, and really knows his stuff:

p.s. For these kinds of things, even if you aren't majorly into historical re-enactment, it's a good idea to get decent quality stuff, whether it's mass-produced or handmade by known artisans. Sometimes this costs more, but not always -- and there's a lot of dross out there which is expensive but not worth it. It's much easier to resell or find a home for good stuff than for bad (if a re-enactment group won't even take a Trooper helmet as a donation, basically you're left with an ugly rusting doorstop -- and even if you got it cheap, it's no bargain then). And if it's made by an artisan, even if it's not 100% accurate, it still counts as part of a limited body of work. I recently acquired a signed Kirby Wise Norman-type sword, and a Deepeeka replica of the Deurne Roman helmet, for about the same price -- both secondhand. My guess is that the sword will be worth more in a decade, because eventually Kirby will retire from swordsmithing -- the Deepeeka company, meanwhile, has turned out hundreds of helmets, and unlike Kirby, they mass-produce a lot of their components.

I also collect glass paperweights and love to watch/read about/discuss silent films.

I too have a large vinyl collection - bet we have some of the same records, as I am a big fan of '60s garage rock. :hi:

68. Collecting Business Cards - Mostly from bookstores
Right now I have business cards from (nearly) 1,800 different bookstores...I started collecting them from local bookstores around Maryland, but then I started buying cards (and card collections) on ebay and/or writing to bookstore owners directly - most people seem to be happy to respond (especially since I always include a postage-paid/self-addressed envelope).
