1. You do know that not all Hispanic celebrate Cinco de Mayo, right?
Cinco de Mayo's a Mexican holiday, but not all Hispanics are Mexicans.

3. Actually...
It gained prominence as a pride celebration for Mexican-Americans, and then it was taken over by the beer companies. It's not that big a day of celebration in Mexico.

5. I was just talking with a man who had worked
with a woman who was a native of Mexico City. He had wished her a happy Cinco de mayo last year and he said she looked at him as if to say "Happy what?" LOL.

7. That's funny
I'm sure there's at least some sort of commemoration in Puebla, Mexico, which is where the Mexican army, smaller in size, drove out the French army during their war, but it's just not as big a deal anywhere else in Mexico as it is in America.

But don't get me wrong. I love Cinco de Mayo as I'm very interested in Hispanic/Latin cultures.

9. This is pretty much what that woman said to
this guy. I guess its a big thing in some parts of Mexico but not everywhere. Guess it must be something like Patriot's day which is celebrated in MA but not anywhere else in the U.S.

10. Good point
What really cracks me up is how few Americans realize that Mexico didn't kick out the Spanish on May 5th, but rather the French. Sometimes I can actually see the smoke curling from their ears...

6. Most Mexicans don't even recognize it as a holiday
Their big day is Sept. 16, which is their independence day. Cinco de Mayo was hyped up by the beer companies in the 1980s, starting with Anheiser Busch and followed by Corona and the rest, as a way to tap into the Mexican American community.

Of course it turned into a brilliant marketing strategy cause today is the day when everybody is Mexican for a day

8. It's like St Patrick's day
Cinco de Mayo was a day for Mexican immigrants to the USA to exhibit their ethnic pride. But it's not a big holiday throughout Mexico. Now it's become an occasion for folks to drink until they drop, but the culture is still there--for those who care.
