Olsen Breaks NYC Smoking Ban

Mary-Kate Olsen was so desperate for a cigarette, she broke New York City's smoking ban by lighting up in the ladies' toilet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala on Monday night. After enjoying dinner, the teen TV star preferred to spend her time chain smoking in the toilet rather than socializing with other guests including Nicole Kidman, Liam Neeson and Kevin Costner - much to the disgust of women needing to relieve themselves, according to the New York Daily News. A witness says, "Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen get up in the middle of dinner and walk in, and Mary-Kate is saying she wants a cigarette. She then proceeds to chain smoke in the bathroom of the Metropolitan Museum! Amanda Peet walked in while Mary-Kate was smoking and was clearly repulsed." A spokesperson for the museum was shocked to hear about guests smoking in the prestigious institution: "We don't allow smoking. It's unfortunate that we didn't spot it. There was no security in the bathrooms. I think that's something the museum will have to consider next year.

Talk about disgusting - geez, at least go outside instead of smoking inside of a Museum!!! Girl is 18 year old anoertic addicted to nicotine - and supposively a role model with all those products geared towards young girls. What next Mary-Kate & Ashley cigerettes?

I know the smoking ban is harsh to those of you who are smokers, but it wasn't like she was lighting up in a bar. This was the fricking Metropolitan Museum of Art. That is just beyond crass and horrible judgement. I guess the Olsen twins are turning into a pair of classless Brittneys :eyes:

1. Bring back the death penalty!
Dying's too good for the likes of her!

Seriously, what an ass--it's laregly about her being a celebrity and believing rules don't apply to her.

3. If I read where she lit up in a bar or restaurant....
...I wouldn't have posted this here on DU. I know NYC has a smoking ban very similiar to what we have here in Delaware (no indoor smoking). But geez, use some fricking common sense. This is the Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the top Museums in the world. Smoking bans have been in affect for most museums well before it became uncool and/or illegal to smoke inside public places because the smoke can damage works of art.

And it's not like she was the only smoker at that Museum. Nicole Kidman is a smoker and I highly doubt you'd see her running to the bathroom in a prestigious art museum just to curb a fix.

I think the cuteness & adorability of these 2 girls is on the downside. They soon will no longer appeal to the tweener girls which is pretty much the source of their massive income. And the Olsen twins hardly have shown and skills at acting. Let's just hope all that money is invested well so they can live off that for life

5. I never saw the appeal of these two--especially when they pose for
the cameras--they've got really odd shaped faces.

Neither can sing, dance or act--you're right--they won't be around long after they hit 20!

8. I'm way to old to find anything attractive about them
and I think what people do find is that there are two of them. If there was to be only one that had those looks as qualifications, that one would not be able to find work making porn.
Each is financially secure, and it is just as well.

13. If those two are smart, they will give up acting and concentrate
more on the fashion and cosmetic side of their brand. The twin-thing is so played out.

And smoking in a public building is pretty rude. Lots of teen girls smoke in order to maintain their weight, so Mary-Kate is hardly unique. If she chooses to light up, she should go outside and just get the flood of pap pics out of the way.

having to talk to Nicole Kidman or Kevin Costner.

4. You know, I'd be happy to have my dad talking to even George Bush himself
then to have watched him die of Cancer.

Not to be rude - but that's a pretty crass statement. Some of us have lost parents & loved ones to cancer

7. Crass indeed.
Fighting crass (Olsens) with crass (my post) doesn't always work. Didn't mean to offend. I too have seen loved ones lose to cancer.

That doesn't mean the people have to stop talking about cancer. Shit, Dems are too sensitive.

6. Disrespect
is what it's called
She might be asking jenna for tips on social skills.

*And for the record, for those who feel smoking bans are harsh, I can honestly say that it's preferable to sitting here trying to type through a haze of smoke every day.
Everybody in my office is a chain smoker-except for me and one guy.
I go home wheezing and I swear I have nicotine fits when I leave here.
I quit smoking because I didn't want to die of cancer or emphysema, so I don't appreciate being forced to inhale the smoke from close to 100 cigarettes every day.
My clothes stink so badly I have to put them in a separate closet because my bedroom smelled like an ashtray.
One of these people has young children, both parents smoke like chimneys around them and she can't figure out why they're always sick.
I asked if their doctors lecture them about smoking and they told me they would stop seeing any physician who would do that.
Do what? Tell them the truth?
I'd stop seeing any doctor that DIDN'T advise me to stop killing myself and poisoning others.
