Question about dealing with job offers

I don't want to jump the gun and I'm knocking (pounding) on wood here, but it's best to be prepared than to not know what in god's name to do.

By the middle of next week, I'll have interviewed with 4 different organizations.

Question is, what if I get an offer from one place, and then a week later, get a better offer elsewhere? Is it okay to then retract an acceptance from the first place?

1. you need to play the game right ...

smile, bat your eyes, be verrrrrrrrrrrrrryyyy thankful, gush about the new job and how great it is. Then tell them you are being considered for other offers and you are waiting to hear from them. Gush about how important it is to MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION. Tell them you will call in about two weeks.

Maybe they will come back with an even better offer... Nothing excites people like competition. If you get multiple offers, smile and gush. Tell them they are really great but the other guy is offering more money. You'd really like to be with company A but gosh, the money is soooooooo gooood somewhere else.

Be nice, appreciative and not at all arrogant.

2. Ask them for time.

If they want to hire you, they want to hire you. Ask them to give you a day or two to decide, ring round the others and ask them if they're minded to accept you. Everybody appreciates openness; it's an important decision and they'll understand.
