Deputy Sues Hospital After Being Injected With Glitter
<snip>

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- An undercover Orange County deputy says he went to Florida Hospital for a shot of pain medication, but instead the syringe was filled with glitter, the kind used in makeup.

Even the attorney for Florida Hospital called this case exquisitely bizarre. It has not been exquisite for the undercover officer who claims, ever since the injection of glitter, he's been plagued by health problems.

It was cosmetic glitter, according to attorneys for the undercover deputy, injected right into muscles of the deputy's hip. The deputy had gone to Florida Hospital for sinus surgery in October of 2000. Nurses were supposed to inject him with Demerol. But one shot, he says, didn't make him feel better.

"There was a lot of pain. I complained several times that something was wrong in my buttock, hip, in the area I got the shot," said the deputy, whose identity Channel 9 is concealing.

Three months later, he had a four-inch by four-inch mass near the injection site. It took another surgery to remove it. An analysis determined there was "green and red sparkling material" around the mass. In other words, glitter.

"When Dr. Nawiki came to me and said we took some glitter looking stuff out of my buttock, I was shocked. I still am," the deputy said.

He continues to have health problems. He walks with a limp and has been hospitalized 12 more times. He's now suing Florida Hospital.

Attorneys for the hospital said in court Monday that no one knows exactly what was in the deputy's leg or how it ended up there. They suggested it might even be contaminated medicine, so the hospital should not be blamed.

Channel 9 wanted to ask Florida Hospital about any sort of investigation they've done into this situation, but their attorneys didn't want to comment and their press office did not return a call.

The trial is expected to last four more days.

1. See! This is why we need malpractice reform. How dare he!
He's the reason medical costs are so high.

:sarcasm:

8. I believe "branding"
is common practice when marking a uterus for removal. The surgeon routinely uses a brand that will allow easy recognition of orientation once the organ is removed.

This story has been reduced to a bunch of half-truths because it makes for more interesting reading. We all love a scandal.

Branding is not done on organs that are not being removed, and is not done as an ego boost.

17. That's fine. You're entitled to your feelings.
Every surgeon uses his own marking. There are no rules.

Personally, it matters not to me. The organ is just going to be destroyed, not hung on the wall like a trophy. I only care if the surgeon does his job well.

23. No -
When I was in school, that was considered the correct usage. Most peolpe incorrectly use the plural "their" instead of the singular.

I've never been hung up on the idea that the use of a pronoun indicates anything political. Probably because of my age.

In fact, in the OR where I used to work, most of the OB-Gyns were female.

19. I just googled the story and it's even more fucked up
than I remember. he branded the uterus with his ALMA MATER initials. Please. It may be just a uterus to you, but to a woman going through that, she can suffer severe emotional distress. Just like losing a breast, a lot of women I've met have severe identity issues. You should try to be more sensitive. And thanks for essentially accusing me of spreading half truths and scandal. :eyes:

24. When this story first came out,
if I recall correctly, there was a lot of talk about this as if it were done on an organ that was not removed. That is what I was referring to as "half-truths," not anything you said.

I recalled that it was his alma mater, but as my point was that TO ME it does not matter, it was an irrelevant point.

I am female, by the way, and have had many surgeries. I have said you (and by extension, anyone) is entitled to you feelings on this. How is that insensitive? Just because I don't have the same feelings?

6. I'm thinking that if they did some searching...
They'd find that this guy had glitter and syringes of his own.

Guess he had no luck getting a mouse into his beer bottle or fiding a loose finger for his chili...

10. It is a bit odd... what on earth would makeup glitter be doing in a...
hospital... in a SYRINGE? Unless they can tie someone who works in the hospital to him personally, this seems pretty outrageous.

16. That's EXACTLY what I'm saying!
Glitter in a syringe in a hospital. Now, just WHAT fucking bullshit would have to be going on to have a hype full of glitter in the hospital? And would NOT somebody have noticed that the stuff looked fucked-up when they raised the spike to purge the bubbles and check the dosage before sticking the guy? And wouldn't glitter require a larger-gauge needle than what you'e customarily use in a hospital for injecting Demerol? Say, maybe a big needle like you'd buy at a farm store for injecting horses?

I have a hunch the guy glittered himself up because he's tired of working for a living.

22. you might be thinking of arts and crafts grade glitter
Edited on Tue May-10-05 11:36 PM by FizzFuzz
not cosmetics grade which would be much much finer and not need a horse size needle....
....but then again, when I think of cosmetic grade glitter, I don't think of red and green......hmmmmmmm :scratchinghead:

I would like to see if investigations bear out your idea. It makes more sense than a Nurse saying, "Ooohh well there was a syringe of glitter just lying around and I didn't notice anything funny when I gave the shot....."

26. I have nail polish with very fine red and green glitter
It might go through some syringe needles.

Or I suppose that a person could mix some eyeshadow with water and inject it.

Anyhow, this sure is a bizarre case -- whether the guy injected himself, or someone else did it to him under the guise of medical treatment.

11. It could be the nurse is a junkie
It is all too common (but still uncommon) that medical personel get addicted to drugs. They steal drugs from patients. Nurse uses his drugs and he expects a shot, so she uses glitter.

25. I think they fudge the records...
not replace the drugs with their body paint.

Besides, as BiggJawn pointed out, that stuff would require a much larger needle.

His story smells.

14. It's Florida!
Down here women get injected with industrial silicone seal and their families wonder why they die. The moral of the story is don't get sick or treated in Florida. I'm outta here as soon as I get a job elsewhere. What a mistake I made moving here to Dumbfukistan.
