What am I thinking. I don't eat many eggs. No one in my house eats many eggs. Why did I just get more chicks that will be laying eggs this fall? I like having eggs and chickens and the ability to survive on eggs and chickens. Money in the coop? Am I nuts?

1. Start selling the eggs.
Is the going price still a dollar/dozen?

7. $2.00 a dozen
more if they might have a sperm in them which I never understood. Maybe I should sell rooster sperm for 50 cents apiece and let people, oh never mind. I used to sell them to my neighbors and friends who now have their own chickens because they liked our eggs so much.

4. We used to sell yard eggs easily. There's something about those...
dark yolks that makes them taste better!

9. I've had people ask what's wrong with them-dark yolks, thick shells
And why do they stand in a mound shape rather than running out flat when you fry them.

14. ROFL! They're just used to the thin runny yolk. Yard eggs are better.

6. You can freeze them
But I don't have the instructions handy. maybe Google it. Seems like you freeze them in ice cube trays. Then put the cubes in a bag.

Or give them to a food bank?

A Happy problem, anyhoo!

12. That's a good idea for late in the summer before production drops
scramble a bunch, mix in a little salt, freeze for those cold dark days when the chickens are taking a break. Why did I get more? I like chickens.

15. I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes them
My daughter swears this is a serious addiction problem approaching the level of internet gambling or meth abuse. Although SHE is mighty proud of her Golden Laced Wyandotte.

What kinds of chicks did you buy? And what kinds do you have laying? They really are fun.

I started out this year with a dozen. Then I bought six more. Then i bought 14 more. Then my neighbor gave me an Ancona breeding set and 20 older pullets she couldn't keep out of the garden.

THEN my neighbor ordered 200 chicks and when others backed out I agreed to take 50 (this past Tuesday). I am probably going to take them to the flea market tomorrow and sell them for $1.50 apiece
(they cost me $.30).

The kicker is, she had five hatched Silkies ( two blue and three black) and a little Banty something-or-other that were getting beat up by the other chicks, so she just gave them to me if I would try to keep them alive. They are almost a month old and they are half the size of my four-day-old chickies!

They are TOO cute. SO, you see, I have been overcome with this poultry psychosis as well!

Good luck to us!

19. Hahahahahah, you're worse than meeeeee
It all started 7 yrs ago with:
4 silkies (brown got racooned, black and white with grey rooster)
4 barred rocks
2 light brahmas
2 silver spangled hamburgs (who talk with a different accent, "dah dot dah dahhhhh" rather than "look look look look look", and look/act wilder than any other chickens we have. Lucy could probably survive in the wild)

Then some silky eggs from a friend to hatch and athen couple more barred rocks since we were down to 2 barred rocks and 2 silkies. Silky chicks are so tiny you need to get them a couple wks before getting full sized chickens but they are quite the characters as adults.

Then a couple americanas to lay green eggs (they didn't. They laid brown eggs as did the white silkies hatched from white eggs from parents who both came from white eggs).

Oop, several died or got racooned so...
Faverolles!!! Very interesting bred, mixture of several birds, from France, full sized with 5 toes and feathered legs and muffs. Out of 11/12 survivors, 4 pullets and 7 roosters. At this point I thought it'd be fun to raise a specific breed so kept 1 rooster (we'd picked him up since a chick so he's really gentle).

Off to the feed store I go to get more food for the dozen chickens we have and there is a cage of 3 wk old barred rocks that they were either giving away that day or they'd be "destroyed". Hey, free chicks, good multi-use birds? I took 13, another woman took 16.

Have you seen http://www.feathersite.com/

Sigh

20. Is there a 12 step program?
We need help

But chickens really are fascinating. There are so many different types. What kind of housing do you have? I can't let mine roam free or my dog gets them.

I need to get out and work on cages as we type. bad me. I'm designing a sort of modular coop, with differnt panels you can rig together in various configurations. The progress is s-l-o-www since we had to take three female cats to the spay clinic this morning

At least we chicken freaks won't go hungry if the stuff hits the fan, eh?

23. Step1- admit you have a problem
2-Believe a getting greater chickens can restore you to sanity.
3-Turn your life over to the thought of chickens, as we understood Chicken. And thought.
4-Make an inventory of your chickens
5-Admit the nature of your chickens and their housing
6-Be ready to get NO MORE chickens but take better care of the ones you have.
7-Don't go to the feed store hungry or tired or with excess money
8-Make a list of all chickens you might want, be willing to make compromises, within reason.
9-Make amends, building a bigger better chicken coop
10-Continue chicken inventory
11-Seek through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with our chickens, praying only for knowledge of their will for us and the power to carry that out
12-Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, carry this message to other addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs. Cook eggs and eat them.

11. I would buy your eggs
Free range fresh eggs. There's nothing like them. Such a deep, rich golden color to the yokes. Really, really tasty. Do you have neighbors? How about leaving flyers for everyone on your street explaining what you just wrote here. You like having chickens, you like the idea of lots of fresh eggs but you can't actually use them all. Might as well sell some and pay for the chicken feed. Get up early to collect them and take a little morning stroll to leave them for your neighbors.

Now if I only knew somebody close by with their own milk cow.

13. You remind me of myself with tomatoes
I have no idea why I grow so many every year. The the harvest starts coming in I'm reduced to forcing tomatoes on EVERY person I know. So know what I did today? I purchased some coldset tomato seeds to see how long I can extend the harvest. I'm pushing for into December. I have no clue why.

Here's a great website for you.
