I'm weak. I was at Simon & Garfunkel's Concert in Central Park and at Live Aid in Philly. Also the first Who farewell tour, but I mention that only in fun.

You?

1. Does the Dead in Vegas count? When all you see in Ceasars Palace
Edited on Sat May-14-05 04:41 PM by ET Awful
after 11:00 PM or so is a bunch of hippies, Vegas becomes a very weird place :)

The funniest facial expression in the world is that of the croupier at a craps table with a $25 minimum bet when a dirty dreadlocked hippie walks up to the table and when the croupier asks if he knows it's a $25 minimum, the same dirty hippie pulls out a wad of bills that would choke a racehorse :)

Wherever they are, it's like the city turns to tiedye.
Also, Black Sabbath/Blue Oyster Cult in St Louis in 1980-the famed "Black and Blue Tour"

13. True, but I always found shows in Vegas to be exceptionally decadent and
weird :)

There's something about walking into a more upscale casino like Ceasars and seeing a sea of tie-dye, especially when at the same time 1/2 a mile away, the line for $1 beer at Slots o' Fun is spilling out across the Strip and blocking all traffic to the point where they needed to bring out hoses to clear the road :)

I actually had great time. The Stones played like their lives depended on it - which can be taken literally. And, I can see myself in the film, which is a questionable bonus.

8. They were hosing down folks in the infield near the stage
it was brutal hot. We were up in box seats. Some friends bought tickets from a scalper... knew I wanted to go but didn't have the bucks... they called me from RFK... had and extra ticket did I want to buy it... I waivered - finally said I couldn't skip meals the next week - they took pity said come anyway. Turns out the scalper gave them one more ticket than they paid for - they tried to fleece me - but took pity instead.

Hot show - but a great show.

What was that 1986?

9. I thought Jerry collapsed on stage either a week or a month later
Edited on Sat May-14-05 05:26 PM by undisclosedlocation
Maybe we can find out from Deadheads or Deadhead sites. I surely am not going to find it in my memory.

Edit: He collapsed, but not on stage, in 1991. Googling indicates that you're right about the RFK show being in '86. I thought it was later, but then, it's possible that I was at a later show without Petty and am merely confused.

6. The first Tibet Freedom concert in San Francisco
Amazing three days.

The funniest, funniest, funniest part of the weekend came after the Red Hot Chili Peppers (I think) had just played their set. Everyone was all amped up and standing. The MC comes out and says, "Now, please join me in welcoming to the stage...Yoko Ono!"

Imagine the sound of 300,000 people groaning and sitting down at exactly the same time.

"Aaaaarrrrggggghhhhh!" *THUD*

I think it must have measured on the Richter scale.

28. I went to a later one, in DC
The one in 1998 (I think), which was great (Pearl Jam, REM, KRS-One, Pulp, Mutabaruka, Radiohead, Sonic Youth, surprise RHCP and a zillion others including, naturally, the Beasties), but lightening struck a few fans during Herbie Hancock, which was awful and really scary. Michael Stipe came out and tried to keep us all calm while half the audience was freaking out. Yikes.

Good show, but Beck had to cancel. I think Patti Smith did too.

He said the band looked exhausted, the acoustics were terrible, they only played like 11 songs and the stadium (Candelstick Park)didn't even sellout. Nobody knew it was the last concert at the time.

100,000 fans were there. It may have been called Schafer Stadium back then. Elton was great. He entered the stage via helicopter. He actually climbed down a rope ladder from a hovering helicopter on to the stage. He was great.

22. Quite a Few ....
Edited on Sat May-14-05 09:12 PM by Trajan
Some (most) I cannot recall the dates ...

California Jam at Ontario Motor Speedway ... It was actually rather dreadful from a logisticl standpoint: Hot as hell, water and restrooms were rare and hard to get to ... The sound system was AWFUL, especially for ELP, who tried to use a quadraphonic system, with the channel/stations a good half-mile apart .... which lead to some AWFUL sound delays, and unsychronized output .... I left half way through ELP's set from utter disgust and exhaustion ....

From Wikipedia:

California Jam
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

California Jam was a rock music festival concert held at the Ontario Motor Speedway in Ontario, California on April 6, 1974. It attracted over 200,000 fans, and was one of the last of the original wave of rock festivals, as well as one of the most well-executed and financially successful, and presaged the era of media consolidation and the corporatization of the rock music industry.

Unlike other rock festivals such as Woodstock, the concert was never released as a film or sound recording, however several portions of it were broadcast live on the ABC television network, which was also a sponsor of the show. The audio portion of the show was also broadcast in stereo on FM radio stations, an early example of simulcasting.

Acts that performed at the festival included:

* Black Sabbath
* Black Oak Arkansas
* The Eagles
* Deep Purple
* Emerson, Lake and Palmer
* Earth, Wind and Fire
* Rare Earth
* Seals & Crofts

A sequel concert, California Jam II, was held in 1978.

-snip-

I did not go to Cal Jam II ... no fuckin way ...

Led Zeppelin; Kezar Stadium, June 2, 1973

We actually saw Zep THREE TIMES on this tour ...

First at the LA Forum, then at SF Kezar Stadium, then BACK to LA for yet another show ...

Damn life was good then ....

Pink Floyd, Animals Tour - Anaheim Stadium - May 6 or 7, 1977

No .. I didnt see The Wall .... I really would have liked that ... I slept at the 'Animals' Concert ....

I saw 'The Who' at the Los Angeles Coliseum in about the same timeframe, but I dont find anything on the web about it ... That was a good one ....

I recently saw one of the KROQ Weenie Roasts, two years ago or so ... it was great ...

Now: how bout some of the BEST concerts ?>

Genesis w/ Peter Gabriel: Santa Monica Auditorium, Selling England By The Pound - Sometime in 73 .... and 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway' at The Shrine Auditorium in 1974 ... perhaps the BEST concert I had ever seen ...

Yes - BEFORE, DURING and AFTER 'In The Round' staging ....
Yes was an amazingly 'musical' show ... I just loved their musical constructions live ....

Devo - saw Devo numerous times at small clubs in the LA area during a late tour ... Nothing can be funner than dancing WITH Mark Mothersbough on the tables of the Coach House for 'Mr. B's Ballroom' and other Devo syntho-dance masterpieces ....

Gentle Giant: Yes: I was a Gentle Giant Fan ... Saw them a few times at The Roxy in LA .... They were superb ....

25. The Bicentenniel Willie Nelson 4th of July picnic 1976
That was my Woodstock. Three days I can barely remember. Except for skinny dipping in a cow pond with a hundred some other people. The horrendous port-a-potty situation, excellent music. Getting tons of free BBQ and watermelon at the end of the concert.

Waking up at 5:30 in the am to music from Leon and Mary Russell.

Saw quite a few acts at both for a small price. Saw Sheryl Crow, Sarah Mclachlan, Bonnie Raitt, Queen Latifah, Natalie Merchant, Dixie Chicks, in addition to others.

Seperately, I have seen Peter Gabriel, which will ALWAYS be the BEST show I have ever seen, quite a production. I also have seen Phil Collins, and Sarah McLachlan. Went to one show that had REO Speedwagon, 38 special and Cheap Trick. Saw the Stones as well. And Cher a couple of times.

29. The People's Bicentennial in Concord, MA.
It was an alternative to the regular bicentennial celebrations that were all over the Boston area at the time. It was an overnight, outdoor show. Included Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Holly Near--I forget who else. It was rainy out, but we still had a blast, crashed right there, then were awakened by the cannons going off in the very early morning (from the town's annual battle re-enactment), which sucked. Then later in the morning, President Ford was speaking on the other side of the river as part of the town's celebration, with speakers sending his words out, and folks from our side went down to the riverbank to heckle him.

32. Big/Huge on a different level
Had to be Zeppelin, last tour, Cincinnati, 1070-something...

...Sold out, standing room only, it was so packed that Robert Plant actually stopped the concert and asked everyone to "PLEASE" back up from the stage cause the crowd was freaking him out, "Whenever someone falls over on this side, there's a wave of people falling over all the way across to the other side!", he said.

I know for a fact that there were more people in the Colosseum than there should have been, I for one, (and 6 of my friends) had no ticket and had crashed the gates that night.

I think I quit going to concerts after that.
