Lets say DU forms a Hippie commune
What would you bring to the community?

I bring a strong back, a willingness to work when no one else is, and an appreciation for the arts?

How will you participate?

13. We will have to support ourselves somehow
I know of a commune that makes peanut butter and hammocks on site and they are self sufficient. Of course we'll at least need a straight truck to transport our goods to market.

Thank you for the compliment of my poetry. I can also strum a few chords on a guitar and I've got a back you could set a table on so you know I'm good for chopping wood and such.

Edited on Sat May-14-05 04:34 PM by havocmom
sew, cook like you wouldn't believe using all those good for us herbs and veggies.

Also pretty fair hand with minor plumbing/electrical, can work on older cars (pre-computer chip. Am mechinically minded enough to work on building better mousetraps, water storage ideas, generally recycling to make things work better and easier.

Work well with kids and critters. They respond, learn and blossom around me.

Plus I am weird as hell and quite amusing. Oh, and have some healing touch skills. Training in communication skills and mediating.

But I don't spell for shit and my back is not what it used to be. Some younger bloke can lift the heavy stuff. I have reached village wise woman stage of life.

31. Hmm, I have a few useful skills. I've been:
A carpenter contractor, from setting slab forms to building the cabinets. I ran a military electrical shop on a remote site in Alaska, which required a lot of work arounds. I've worked with military housing crews repairing appliances and plumbing. I'm also a jackleg shadetree mechanic.
I've raised and trained horses, mules, cattle, guard dogs, hunting dogs, stock dogs. I've raised both tropical birds and farm fowl from eggs hatched in two cabinet-sized incubators I built.
I've cleared heavy timber and built timber bridges. I've cleared land and planted crops. I've been complimented on my landscaping skills and floral growing by professionals.
I've operated and maintained heavy equipment, including fire department pumpers and have college and practical training in fire suppression. I've maintained and operated sailboats and power boats up to forty foot shrimp boats.
I've built and operated distillation units and chemical labs. I have a fair grasp on animal medicine.
I'm a wannabee fiction writer with a third of a million words written.
That's a fair start, but this list is getting rather long. :)

32. I would need training to do core work...
e.g. farming, et all.

I have computer skills, some graphics design skills, some web skills, some database creation/manipulation skills.

I have allergies.

I have a sense of humor held with esteem by many, though others think I'm off the wall. One person thinks I'm bizarre, but that's his problem.

I have a sense of community and looking out for other people.

I am NOT, however, the brightest bulb on the tree. I may have a high IQ, but I am also tantamount to Chrissy Snow/Reg Barclay hybrid in persona. Thanks to Asperger's combined with traumatic childhood.

But I survived and am willing to serve and be a productive part.

I also have a solution for people deemed obosolete in the new order, such as myself. But let's not go there. It's too depressing.

I know basic combat first aid for light and heavy wounds, triage, and such. I can work on older pre-computer chip vehicles. I know the basics of backyard gardening. I can operate most tractors, a Bobcat/Mustang light loader, and drive both straight trucks and OTR vehicles while maintaining them.

I could also be Minister of Defense and Counterintelligence. I have guns and would probably be good at operating a spy network to counteract the Freeper commune down the road.

So without getting into my actual job (which would be useless in a commune) I like to think I have enough skills to get by.

Too late to plant. But the weather was beautiful and it was easy livin', and everything was fine. And then came that winter. There were forty or fifty of them here living in this one-room place down here. Nothing to eat - starvin'. Out by the side of the road lookin' for dead horses...Anything they could get ahold of. Now there's - there's eighteen or twenty of them left and they're city kids. Look at them. But they're getting this crop in. They're gonna stay here until it's harvested. That's the whole thing.

Will that help any? ;)

I can grow things, and am pretty skilled at sewing. (I worked for a theatrical costumer for 15 years, although that was quite a while ago.) I'm also a pretty quick learner at a variety of skills. I used to be a good writer, but I'm long out of practice with that.

I actually like washing dishes. And I can do laundry by hand if I have to.

On the downside, my back, my knees and my ankles are shot. Getting old ain't for sissies.

If nothing else, I can serve as a bad example!

We can make our own wine, paper and clothing :) Sorry dudes, my hemp isn't smokable....LOL.

For the meat and dairy consumers, I'll make sure the animals' welfare is more important than your diet!

66. I can teach the children, cook meals, do finances (yes, there'd still be
some to deal with), bake breads and such, and have many computer skills, including HTML.

I'm also mechancially inclined, so simple construction and repairs wouldn't be beyond my talents. :)

93. It's a good thread

It's different. I love the "Who is Your Most Hated Republican" threads (because that is an evolutionary, one week its *, then DeLay, its always changing)...but this thread was very unique.

I actually just came back to DU a couple days ago. Soon after the election, I never came back. I quit DU totally and didn't watch hardly any news I was so distraught. I'll admit I wished I had stayed away from the News...there's un ugly mess going on. Maybe I should have been like most of the rest of this nation...just stick my head in the sand...But I can't do that.
