For the DU cloudwatchers: awesome mammatus cloud photos
The following cloud photos were sent to me by a friend in Nebraska. They apparently were taken in June 2004 near Hastings, but any DUers from Nebraska will know better than I do.

Here's the link to a website with more of these photos: http://www.hprcc.unl.edu/nebraska/june2004hastings-mammatus.html

2. I love watching storms.
Having grown up in "tornado alley," I try to avoid the really bad storms, but I love to watch the clouds roll in. :hi:

6. I suspected at first that they were Photoshopped, but
then I noticed that they're posted on the website owned by the High Plains Regional Climate Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and then I was even more impressed that they're _real_.

9. I saw clouds like this about 8 years ago.
They are harmless, but they do look quite eerie, don't they?

20. Where did you see them?
I understand if you don't want to say, but I lived in Nebraska for a lot of years and never got to see any clouds like this. Bummer.

21. This was in Western PA.
The sky was a weird greenish-orange. The local news even broke in to assure people that there was no severe weather. It was strange, but beautiful.

23. Thank you!
I have a close friend who's an editor for Rodale in PA, and so I have to get up there next time I'm in the states. I'll be on the lookout for funky clouds. :hi:

12. Yes, they're real
and the resulting storm dumped like 11 inches of rain in a few hours. I believe they're getting federal disaster relief.

It does look like something out of Exodus, doesn't it? Eeek.

I lived in your fine state for 15 years and saw plenty of spectacular skies in that time, but I never saw anything as cool as what these photos show. Thanks for confirming! :hi:

the site link is really awesome too. I am always looking to the skies. I live in NY and I NEVER see truly gorgeous skies like those in other parts. I'm always searching for sky pics from other places, so I thank you for a real special treat today.

16. Love your username, Halobeam!
And if you ever have the time to take a driving trip across the U.S. in summer, I'd recommend Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma. There's some beautiful sky out there when you get off of the interstate and navigate by section lines. :hi:

22. The one thing Nebraska has
is unobstructed views of the sky. :) And yes, sometimes the view is quite gorgeous. I also recommend Hawaiian sunsets:

26. Yeah, I'm seeing some "human parts" in those clouds --
Maybe that's why they're called "mamma-tus" clouds.

They're amazing. Thanks for the photos.

34. Wow...... I would love to see that in person someday...
those are amazing, like some sort of strange life form growing out of the cloud.

But also sort of like stubby pillsbury dough boy legs, all dangling down.

The way the light hits them is really wonderful.

So they're not related to tornados, eh? Boy, I'd run if I saw them and didn't know what they were!
