Nor will I ever have it. I hate fish, much less raw fish. Yuck! I do like seafood (shellfish)!

1. Yes, you are very deprived. Sushi is of the gods!
I love it.

I was quite trepidatious the first time I tried it, but I'm glad I did - I fell in love with it! Raw tuna - ain't nothing like it.

10. That is true. I did try
Edited on Fri May-20-05 10:19 AM by Shell Beau
a sardine once and it was as disgusting as I thought. I've tried for all my life to like fish. I've tried salmon, talapia, catfish, flounder, grouper, red fish, red snapper, etc. And I don't like any. I did have some red fish one time that tasted like meat, and it was okay, but that is it.

Oddly, I like fish sticks. I know it is weird. Minced fish parts all in one!

14. Did you have them all cooked?
I'm not big on fish either - some are good, but I never go out of my way to order fish in a restaurant, or to cook it at home. Just not my bag.

But raw fish, whether it's straight sashimi or put on sushi, is WONDERFUL.

I could go the rest of my life and never eat cooked fish again, but I would hate to give up the sashimi and/or the sushi with raw fish on it.

16. Yeah!
They were all either smoked, baked, fried, blackened, pan-fried, etc. I've tried them all several times, and every time they taste like how dead fish smell, to me. And they all taste basically the same.

22. Fishy fishy fishy food ..... where did my fishy gooo?
Its a cultural taste that needs to get calibrated early.
At least that's been my theory. People I know who love to eat sardines and other fishy foods have been exposed to fish early, and they enjoy the fishy salty oily note.

Myself, I could do without it, in all but a few italian dishes where the sardine flavor blends and is absorbed into the sauce.

Try some Filipono dishes, if you really want pungent fishy flavor, Pansit comes to mind, and is quickly banished by the poison area of my brain. :)

5. Try it. I'm not crazy about cooked fish, but sushi doesn't taste at all
fishy. It's wonderful! (Start with something like tuna or salmon, and then you can go on to the more challenging stuff.)

29. i concur
i can not handle most fish. I have found that salmon and octupus are the easiest to handle for someone nervous about giving it a try. I also enjoy the vegeterian rolls, the sea weed salad and soups you can get at most sushi places but not find elsewhere.

7. Nope, not deprived
My wife loves sushi and so we have it whenever we go to a Japanese restaurant. Now, don't get me wrong--I think it's okay. Before I tried it, I thought it sounded awful, but since I've had it I can say that it's just fine.

Still, I could go the rest of my life and never have another bite. Sushi's okay, but nothing to write home about, IMHO.

42. I'm with you.
My daughter likes it a lot, and she partakes of her share. I like the veggie ones or the shellfish kind pretty well even the fish is not bad. But yeah i could go my whole life and never have another piece and be just fine.

Now on the other hand......could i go without my steak? I really doubt it.

8. Not all sushi is 'raw' - go to a restaurant and ask for pieces that aren't
Shrimp or crab based ones for example.

That being said, you are missing something. Tuna based sushi and sashimi, for example, my favorites, aren't 'fishy' at all -- just a wonderful melt in your mouth taste.

13. Not all sushi is raw fish
and yes, you are deprived.

Sashimi is the raw fish side of sushi but sushi really means "vinegared rice" rolled with veggies, fish or pickles. My favorite is unagi which is eel (cooked!). Other common sushi includes shrimp and crab both of which are "cooked" (although served cold).

15. mmm sushi
As someone who doesnt like cooked fish, good sashimi (raw tuna) is nothing like cooked fish. No pungent fish oils,no fish stank. Green wasabi, pickled ginger, soy sauce, and rice rice now I'm hungry for sushi.

Besides if you are eating enough green wasabi, you can eat bad sushi, it's just you'll pay for it later :)

Try the veggie rolls at first to see if you can deal with the spicy condiments :) then jump in with a nice combination roll with a tempura roll, and an UNAGI . (BBQ cooked eel sushi) yum.

17. If you're that worried, try a few kinds that have no fish at all...
Edited on Fri May-20-05 10:23 AM by JHB
Some kinds have no fish at all.

As for the actual fishy-kinds: Get if fresh, i.e., from a guy who's serving it, not something that has spent half the day (or more) in a plastic tray. Find out what it really tastes like before you start slumming...

And finally, when in doubt -- more wasabi! Enough wasasbi will overpower any other taste, guaranteed. Clears your sinuses too!

oriental flavors. I'm not big on Chinese food, although I can eat some things (egg rolls, wantons, stir-fry), and I've eaten at 2 Japanese steak houses and didn't like it. I'm weird I know.

none of the stuff you mentioned is particularly authentic asian food. Particularly the japanese steakhouses. Pure theater.

Edit: I was going to suggest you go to an urban chinatown, but I just saw where you live in your profile--helps explain why you don't like asian food. I can't imagine it's very good in MS.

Chinese restaurants that everyone raves about. They are all owned by Chinese families who came to the USA, so I assume it is as authentic as any other. The same applies for the Japanese. All owned by Japanese families.

41. If you're in the mood to try...
Sometime when you're in a mood to try, got to one of those good ones, and just get a selection of different things.

In the end, sometimes you like things, sometimes you don't. As long as you give it a fair shake, there's no fault, just the way it is.

26. Yes. Sushi is YUMMY!
I just went out for a wonderful sushi lunch a couple of days ago. Had Rainbow roll -- which is California topped with salmon, yellowtail, etc. So delish! You should try some of the non-fish varieties of it, if you're really interested, like California, etc. Also Spider roll is great -- a yummy little crunchy deepfried crab in the middle! And the sashimi really does not taste fishy at all.

My two personal faves are eel and salmon roe. I wouldn't recommend either to a beginner though. Eel is very oily and salmon roe is very, well, oily. Yummmm, though, just YUM.

My husband and I love sushi. It's not all raw fish. There are vegetarian types and cooked types . I'd suggest you at least try it and start with something vegetarian like spiced gourd or avacado roll.
It really is delicious with the wasabi-soy and the ginger slices. If someone told me two years ago I'd love sushi I would have told them they were crazy, but here I am, craving the stuff.
