23. God I hated that film
I would probably have rathered lose a limb than having to watch that rambling, pretentious tripe. Made me long for Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan, and NOTHING has ever made me long for Meg Ryan before.

But hey, that's just me.

52. I like
films that care more about the story than the director's ego, I guess. Wings had some beautiful moments, and I loved the storyline, but there was no story. It was like one long poetry reading with images. The images were nice, and sometimes the poetry was nice--and sometimes it was pompous and pretentious--but there was no movie in it. For me.

LOTR was just so full of bad directing and melodramatic poses and cliches that I couldn't focus on the story. Every scene was a cliche--zooming cameras on faces looking over their shoulders with concern, or knowing, sad smiles at another character's bravery, or running feet stamping on logs to show an enemy rushing hidden through the forest. It was directed with a sledgehammer. I tried really, really hard to like it, but I just couldn't.

And his scene choice was baffling. He didn't seem to be picking out a narrative, he just threw in scenes from the book he seemed to like. It went on too long, when he could have found a more direct narrative.

I guess that's what I hated about both--not enough narrative, too much pretentious meandering. (That probably makes no sense to anyone, but it's the best I can do.)

I like movies that do something. Amadeus, The Unforgiven (which made their list), Princess Bride, Big Lebowski. I liked City of Angels, except Meg Ryan's corny death scene. I loved the way it ended, though. I like creative directing--Baz Lurhman, or the Cohens or Tim Burton. I even like plain old straightforward stories. I just don't like seeing a director who thinks he's more clever than he is.

54. No, that makes sense
...I guess I don't mind a bit of heavyhandedness if it's visually striking or beautiful enough. I like long rambly books too (in the case of LOTR, I grew up with those so I'm very aware of how much Jackson CUT, more than of what he left in. Like the scenes at the river I took my username from. :D)

Haven't seen City of Angels. I hate gratuitous Americanizing remakes of foreign films, even if they're pretty good on their own merits. And a good part of what I love about WoD is the portrait of Berlin, a city I've only been to once and would love to see again.

58. I can see that, about Berlin
I liked the imagery of the walled Berlin, the poverty, the art and music of the city. I loved the Peter Falk scenes as they were casting for the film. SOme of the Homer stuff was inteesting, too. That's the main reason I watched it until the end. Well, that and Solveig Dommartin. But all that "The child was the child before there was a child that could be the child that thought it was a child of a child watching a child think about being something like a child..." I just felt like they thought they were more clever than they were.

The Nicolas Cage film kept the essence but used scene, plot and words, rather than just words, to convey its message--thus it was more watchable to me. Even with Meg Ryan.

21. Cause it's better than at least half of what is on the list
Weird list. More of a random sampling of top films in every genre or style than actual greatest films.

Drunken Master II? I love Jackie Chan, but that was better than Amadeus? No way.

As for Finding Nemo, it's at least one of the best, and probably the best, example of computer generated animation, with a good script, one of the best voice-acting performances ever (Ellen), and it sold a ton of tickets. That's what I mean, I don't know that I'd put it as one of the top 100 films (I might, though), but I think their point is that it is the best example of that type of film.

30. From what criteria - box office receipts?! And given their idols...
They also have a fetish for * and Mann Coulter, so I ain't surprised by the list...

I think they just took movies that had big box office receipts.

"Star Wars" must have made it ONLY because of the special effects; the plot is thin and the acting often dreadful.

Why the 1986 remake of "The Fly"?

"Sunset Boulevard" isn't on the list but deserves to be.

Odd how "It's a Wonderful Life" is mentioned yet "The Wizard of Oz" ism't... especially when "Star Wars" was.

None of the movies appears to be a comedy. That's a joke.

Anybody else find Nemo yet?

32. I disagree with the "strange' angle
Edited on Mon May-23-05 07:18 AM by sleipnir
Many of these films are obscure or forgotten, not strange, IMO. Your average citizen has probably only seen 1/4 of these films, but that does not make them poor choices. Rather, I applaud these two critics for placing hard to find films and others that might be lost over time.

The list reads like a weekly schedule on the old "Z Channel." Which I greatly appreciate.

My "shocked" moment was that Time Mag only put 6 movies from the last 10 years (yes, they have 3 films from '94, but that's 11 years ago.) Their list seems to be centered around the 70's and 40's. Not bad years for film, and I like the inclusion of foreign films and obscure but great movies. A lot of people here seemed to have been spoiled with AFI's lists, that being only American films, had a decent amount of crap to make it to 100.

The Decalogue, being a Polish TV mini-series was a shock, but certainly is one of the best ever.

Miller's Crossing, best "Art" film the Coens' have done, to date.

Edited on Mon May-23-05 08:50 AM by Neo
While Finding Nemo is a good movie, There's so many better Disney films to choose from, like Snow White, Cinderella, or Fantasia.

The horror genre got looked over a lot. No Exorcist, Jaws, Silence of the Lambs, Nosferatu, Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Dracula.

A surprising absence of war movies too. No Apocalypse Now, Bridge on the River Kwai, Saving Private Ryan, All Quiet on the Western Front, The Deer Hunter, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Hamburger Hill.

I have counted 57 movies that DUers are complaining were missed.

Look, people, it's a top 100, something's gonna miss, and I'm unclear on the methodology, or what they were looking for. Frankly, every single movie here belongs here, they either created, revolutionised or aerved as the apex of a genre.
