Happened on Saturday and I have to slam the spacebar for it to work now. (That's because I popped it off and broke the little plastic tabs that hold the springy metal bar in place.) :banghead:

So, now I'm in the market for a new one, and I want something snazzy. Suggestions? Anyone have a wireless keyboard? How are they?

And, if you don't care about me and my keyboard... then :P

1. Oooh... get an ergo
Where the two halves are split and slanted a little... a little weird to get used to, but you wrists will love you for it!

I spilled wine on my laptop keyboard... it's 'missing' about 6 letters now. Ugh.

5. Oh no.... 6 keys.... that's awful.
On one of my laptops, the left shift key is inoperable, which is difficult enough, but six letters.... ugh. Would be a pain to have to connect a separate keyboard to it all the time.

I will look into an ergonomic one, but I have a few PCs and switch between them, so not sure how well I would adjust between the normal ones and an ergo one.

11. Yeah, it does suck
It won't recognize the separate keyboard, either. So for the moment, I'm not using it. Which is ok, we have other computers, LOL.

I found that once I adjusted to the ergo in the first place, it wasn't a problem to switch back and forth. It's the initial adjustment that took a bit, but was worth it!

18. Eugh. No. They're awful.
At least for me. I'm not a "proper" typist, I have to look at the keyboard a lot and my hands travel in a nonstandard fashion. My right hand invades the left side all the time. In that situation, "ergonomic" keyboards suck elephant testicles.

23. That's my concern as well...
My fingers cross over all the time as well, even though I type fast and don't look at the keyboard when I type. Never learned the proper way, and never plan to. Sucking elephant testicles is probably enough of a criticism for me :)

25. I can see that sucking, yeah....
I'm much more of a 'proper' typist, so it makes sense for me. But I only 'shift' with my left pinky, and I only spacebar with my right thumb! :)

2. I just bought a wireless keyboard/mouse combo thing.
The ergonomic elite from Microsoft (I know, I know). I really dig it.

I think you should stay with the broken space bar. It's sorta "sniffacised" you know?

3. We have a Logitech wireless keyboard
Edited on Wed May-25-05 09:00 AM by Heidi
and mouse, and love them. Going wireless is so empowering . . . until the AA batteries in the mouse are dead. :hi:

Edited to add that our keyboard is ergonomic, too. Was difficult to get used to at first, but now I'd have a hard time going back to the old kind.

4. I like the ergonomic keyboards

I will take you 30 minutes to get used to it, then you'll never want to go back to a regular keyboard again.

9. No. But, if you go back and forth it can be.
For example, I bought an ergo for work as well when I bought my first, wired ergo for home. I hated coming in to work and using the regular one after the nougety goodness of the ergo at home.

The initial change was easy for me. It feels very natural.

12. only if you are still looking at the keys when you type.. didn't work 4 me,
but i really like it.. it would be worth the effort to relearn how to type properly...

there is a program that teaches you to type with games.. it uses things like "Missile Defense" the bombs coming down are letters.. caps/small case you have to use the proper keys to knock them down..

however i am dyslexic and f/j and w/p and c/m are inter changeable do to a ambidextrous crossover... and letters like unhr and gqpbd and zsea are also interchangable..

they gave me Stratera for ADD but it turns out i have a form of autism.. it only made me cranky..

8. just unplug it and rince it off holding vertically under warm water..
it doesnt take much.. yu can wrap in a towl with the keys facing out and spin in the washer ..just put in a counter ballace on the other side ofthe tub.. let air dry a while..

usually there is a rubber pad under the keys that retract tem off the contacts..

I got a real good one at GoodWill for 50 cents....

10. The problem is that I broke the plastic tabs under the space bar.
But that's a funny idea to wash it in a washing machine. Are you serious?

16. Wireless is good...
until you run out of batteries.

Or pile stuff up in the way of the lights.

I have a stack of keyboards I keep thinking about repairing or throwing out. Throwing out is probably the best bet, but I also have a stack of old computers I think about repairing or throwing out...

Anyway, after going through all sorts of keyboards, I'm back to the cheapies. The bells and whistles of the Logitec and Microsoft keyboards just aren't worth the hassle. Logitech loaded my system with a bunch of crap to use those cute buttons and wheels, including little reminders to buy more stuff. I'm afraid to load the Microsoft drivers for the one I'm using now, and it works just fine as a plain vanilla keyboard without them.

Go for snazzy, or ergonomic, if you want to, but the most important thing is really the key action. CompUSA has keyboards on display where you can play with them and see how they feel.

20. I'm a little reticent of the snazzy ones for the same reasons...
Maybe I will take a trip to COMP USA to look at one. Some keyboards feel cumbersome, so it would be a good thing to try first.

26. I miss the solid feel and tactile feedback...
of the old IBM and Northgate keyboards. Or even older DEC and other paleolithic ones.

The Logitec came close, but I did the same thing breaking the little plastic tabs on the spacebar when cleaning it. The Microsoft one I'm using now is even better, but still not quite the same.

But, the way I burn up keyboards, if this one goes it's back to the surplus bins for the $5 specials.

(Maybe I should stock up on decent keyboards when they're on sale.)

17. Be glad it was not a notebook
Edited on Wed May-25-05 09:26 AM by DrDebug
I once poured a cup of coffee on my notebook (years ago) and it didn't really like that, because it immediately turned black. I did take it back to the shop to see if it could be repaired, but I had little hope. Several weeks later they said that it needed a new motherboard and much more. I thought it was $2000 or $3000 worth of damage, so I came to collect it again, because it was too much.

Got back to the office. Opened the notebook for the last time (just to say goodbye) and it worked again. It fully recovered without repairs LOL

22. You dodged a bullet.
I spilled water on my laptop keyboard, and after a few hours it worked again... everything but the left shift key. I don't keep fluids near my laptop any longer. That was a scare.
