they were my favorite band. I suppose if I averaged it out over the years they'd be my favorite band of all time.

For a trip down memeory lane I'm catching their show in MN on June 1st!

60. WoW!!!!
I never hear anybody else who liked them the way i did. The album Desolation Boulevard was one of the best heavy pop albums ever! Just one outstanding rock song after another, impeccably recorded and produced.

I saw them live twice. They were not just a studio band. Those guys could play!

Those guys were way underrated. People remember "Little Willie" from the first album and thought they were the Monkees or something. That was a superb band and the next two albums were outstanding. People just didn't have enough patience. They should have been huge.

15. They've only gotten better!
Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone in the universe!

A few years back I read an interview with Andy L, in which he said something like: when I was young, it was all about how many notes you could pack in, but now I think the challenge is to play only the notes that are absolutely necessary.

Kind of reminds me of Chopin's thingy that music was actually the spaces between the notes.

They've got a website www.camelproductions.com, where you can hear some of the newer stuff (and some not-so-new) in the 'jukebox'. Personally, I find their newer material more emotionally full than the older stuff (which is great, too).

I'm still relatively a low tech guy in a in a high tech world, but Eric Sardinas is a newer guitar god. Give him a listen sometime. He looks like a long haired hard rocker, he is flamboyant, and he can really play the guitar! But he is a new wave Blues guitarist. He's good.

41. Three incredible but almost forgotten masters of blues
Edited on Thu May-26-05 08:35 PM by Zuni
Peter Green, the Greatest British Blues player ever, and possibly my all time favorite guitarist. (He plays so cool and emotionally, sparse yet brilliant. Absolutely intoxicating to listen to.)He took over for Clapton in John Mayall's band and recorded one album, A Hard Road, with Mayall that is among the greatest British blues albums ever. He also founded the band Fleetwood Mac, originally a blues band, in 1968. Unfortunately, he took too much acid and had a mental breakdown and left the band in 1970. He has since returned and is playing the blues again. His 1959 Les Paul is also legendary, being one of the sweetest sounding rock machines ever played:

This guy is Mike Bloomfield, America's first guitar hero and my other favorite guitarist. His playing is so wild and off the wall, it tops Hendrix in my book. He was the lead Guitarist for the Paul Butterfield Blues band (one of the best blues bands ever recorded) and later Electric Flag. Also well known for his "Super Session" album with Al Kooper and Stephen Stills. His playing is frantic, jazzy and intense. Unfortunately, Bloomfield died of a heroin overdose in the 70s.

And finally, but surely not least is Hubert Sumlin. He was the guitar genius that gave Howlin' Wolf's songs their electric edge. He riffs and rocks with the best of them. His playing is way ahead of his time and he rocks like no other.

Here he is, on the left, with the Wolf.

Besides, i can't count RJ, since that's acoustic slide and that's a completely different style of playing. (I play both and i know it requries different technique and different thinking.)

I'm not wild about Muddy or Elmore, and i never really liked Bloomfield that much. I think his tone was too brittle for my ear. I'll agree on Charley Patton.

Boy, here i try to agree with you and you're all over me! LOL!

and Elmore James totally revolutionized how slide guitar was played

86. A Little Too Sloppy For My Ear
That's just me. It's not a knock. It's just doesn't do it for me. I like the slide players that are really "on" each of the notes, which is harder than most people think it is. (You'd know, i'd guess.) James and Waters miss a lot of notes in their single note stuff. It's interesting, but not "careful" enough for my taste. Although i will grant you that "Rollin' and Tumblin'" is great.

All the people i mentioned in my first post have the smoothness and sustain that good slide players get, and can use some of the swoops and whines, but they're all very accurate players. That's catches my ear much more than the others.

90. Slide playing is very difficult
to be a real good slide player, I think you have to be more comfortable in open tunings than I am. I can mess around a little, especially with Open G

In reality, I am a bass player first. Bass is my best insturment.

95. Open G!
I use the DGDGBD tuning a lot. I've got one guitar that is never tuned to anything else. In fact, i use it so much that i can play lots of standard chords on it, even though they mostly don't resemble the chords we'd use in standard tuning. (For instance, to play an E chord you leave the 6th unplayed, then (string/fret) 5th/1st, 4th/2nd, 3rd/1st, 2nd/open, 1st/2nd. It's nothing like the open E on a standard tuning, but it sounds good and i can use the slide on my pinky to fret the first string.)

Now i've always got the open chord for slide and can still play chords, both minor and major. Took some time, but i'm glad i did it. I've written two Kottke-esque instrumentals using that tuning and i'm very happy with them.

98. I think Open G is the best open tuning
I used to be mystified by Robert Johnson, but I realize some of his stuff is possible with open tunings, hitting the bass then chord while working the slide with the pinky. When I first got into Robert johnson I could never figure out how he could play the rythym/bass and slide parts at the same time.

Then again, he may have walked hand in hand with the devil, with a hellhound on his trail :scared:

116. Yep!
Love that movie!!! Incidently, it's Vai v. Vai, since he plays both parts, once Ralph puts down the slide. Before that, it's Ry Cooder doing Ralph's guitar parts. Vai actually played the first run on the very Tele that Ralph's using, so it would sound like it was played on on an old plank Tele. Then he does the second time through (the one he screws up) on his ripper guitar. You know, like the one i use!

124. I actually read about that in a guitar magazine
Years ago.I saw Steve Vai in concert in Orlando 5 years ago and his mentor Joe Satriani when he opened for Bowie at the meadowlands during his sound and vision tour. Both can shred,no doubt.

87. Steve Cropper----the greatest Soul guitarist ever
Guitarist for Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, the Blues Brothers (yes, even in their movie he was the guitarist) Sam and dave (Soul man) and Booker T and the MGs, this Stax/Volt House guitarist and band member wrote the book on Soul and funk guitar. You have heard his funky Fender Telecaster in a million famous songs, but his playing is more famous than he is: The Colonel Steve cropper, a white country boy who revolutionized black Memphis Soul Music and Funk

(my bass mentor, I am bass player and the Duck is my hero) played on so many old soul records. If you listen to any oldies station or any Memphis soul records, you are more than likely to hear at least one of them, more likely both along with Booker T. Jones on the organ and Al jackson on the drums

93. not only was he a great player himself
but the guitar he helped design, the Gibson Les paul is among the most popular musical insturments ever made, and one of the best sounding. The Gibson les paul Standard could be considered the Standard guitar of rock music

I have an Epiphone Les Paul Standard, which is actually made by Gibson, and the biggest single difference is it is not as fancy and is much cheaper. Other than that, it is a fantastic insturment.
