Diet Anyone...
So first day on the Atkins diet and just wondering who else has tried this and can you really get through the first 2 weeks? And the "Free food" you can eat this whenever during the first 2 weeks right?

1. I tried it and couldn't. I got tired of munching on pepperoni...
... however, my doctor put me on Xenical. So I'm hoping for results now.

11. Xenical...
..prevents your body from absorbing about 40% of the fat you take in. It all comes out... well... its pretty disgusting so I won't go into it...

2. I wish you well!
First, the Atkin's diet WORKS and is SAFE. Drink lots of water and keep hard-boiled eggs handy for "emergencies". Some people get carbohydrate cravings when using Aspartame - Nutrasweet (Equal). Try Splenda if you have this problem. While fats are allowed, you will lose weight faster if you limit them. If you crave sweets, try sugar-free gelatin. One of the great things about this diet is that a biochemical change occurs which causes ketones to be formed by your body. This harmless condition, ketosis, has as a side effect appetite supression in many people. I wish you the best. We DUer's are always here for support.

6. The egg
Edited on Mon Jul-21-03 12:03 PM by Chilly_Willy
Yes, eggs are wonderful. I just ate that for breakfast. Only thing about diets with me is that well I love food, food is everywhere and it's basically what going out is based around. Hopefully, this will change the way I look at food.

Thanks for the support!

3. I'm on a diet
It's been about a week and a half and I've lost seven pounds so far. I'm doing the Weight Watchers plan. My sister has been doing this for a while and she's lost almost thirty pounds. She gave the literature to me and I've been following the plan. It's pretty simple to follow. It works on a point system. The food you eat has so many points based on fiber, fat and calories. You are allowed so many points a day based on your weight. It's that easy. They have books with just about every food you can think of listed and how many points per serving.

15. did WW a couple of years ago
Was successful. Then got lax and put it all (plus a lovely parting gift of 20 extra lbs) back.

The freedom to choose your points (in WW) or carbs (in Atkins) helps, but it is not easy. So, maybe shifting from one to the other after a period of time is a way to keep from getting bored, stale, and large (again). What is disastrous is going back to the old habits.

Like everything of this nature, we are trying to unlearn a deeply-established pattern of behavior that we enjoyed, even if it was not good for us (kind of like listening to right-wing radio or yelling at the facists on TV). It takes an inner strength and outside support to kick the habit.

Stick with it. And way to go.

5. I used Atkins successfully
Edited on Mon Jul-21-03 12:02 PM by supernova
I started this time last year, matter of fact.

Yes, you can get through the first couple of weeks. I did experience a few days of "carb withdrawal". I was really craving bread and rice and such.

But you stick to the foods on the induction list and those cravings will quiet down. Oh, and even if you find yourself eating a lot of meat at first, that will stop also. You'll go back to regular serving sizes of meat.

I'm especially fond of pickles and olives, so they are my snack foods of choice.

My basic diet now consistes of most low carb veggies, most fruits, and protien. I eat grains and the bread sparingly.

I went from 145 to 115.

edit: yes, do drink enough fluids. I'm really into flavored mineral water this summer.

Splenda is fine for most things, though I didn't really care for it in home-made baked goods.

8. 30 lbs.
Still going on the diet? That is pretty good. Did you do the whole drink thing with the Jell-o as it suggests, and follow the meal plan or did you personalize it the first week. I kind of changed a few things around already, but I get the point about which foods.

9. I'm in the maintainance phase
now.

No, I didn't do the Jello thing, but I"m a chocolate lover. I stuck to the approved foods the first 2 weeks, because I wanted to see what would happen. I lost 6 lbs in those 2 weeks.

Re: chocolate. I discovered I could have a little bunch of semi-sweet choc chips every day as a treat. :9 It just depends on how you decide you want to spend those 20 carbs every day.

23. You have great control
Some people would eat the whole bag of chocolate chips. If someone can think of the few chocolate chips as a treat then they can eat them also.

I use to have a drink or two when I went out to clubs with friends. I would mix it with grapefruit juice and the juice was on the diet at the time.

Also, you can take the veggies that are on the diet and slice them thin and put them in the oven with some seasonings on them and make potato chips out of them. They don't taste the same but they take care of snacking.

12. it is tough, at first.....But
Hang in there.

I've been on it for about three weeks so far. At first, all you do is think (and dream and obsess) about those forbidden foods. But it does get easier. And it works (lost 8 lbs on a one-week vacation!).

For me, it was even harder cause I'm a vegie (who does not really like vegetables). Without the meat, it is tougher. And all of the fake-meats (Boca, etc.) are way high in carbs.

Those lo-carb chocolates are a life-saver (for me). Trader Joes is a good source.

And, after getting used to no grains, bread, pasta, cookies, etc..., I really miss fruit. I cannot wait until I get to the point where fruits can come back to my table.

You do develop a lessened appetite.

And yes, don't go overboard on the hi-fats like cheeses.

Good luck.

14. not a true (or total) vegie
I do eat seafood, just not land (or air) animals. So, I eat fish and shellfish (avoid mussels, oysters, clams). We used to eat a lot of pasta and beans - that had to be changed.

Fortunately, I am married to the best cook in the world, so my dinner choices are incredibly great fish dishes (it was hard to ignore the rice/taters that come with all restaurant meals, but it can be done). It just takes some adjustment in sauces (no Jack Daniels marinate because of the brown sugar, no ketchup, yes mustard, yes soy sauce).

Morning is egg-time. Omelets with some cheese. Stare at the toast and cereal of others and dream.

Lunch is salads - with sprinkled cheese is amazingly filling (though it helps to not get in a rut by eating the same thing over and over and over again).

When in doubt, grab one of those lo-carb chocolates. An addiction I luckily do not have to give up - but the amount is key.

One of the keys to Atkins (and others) is that they tell you NOT to starve yourself. So, I eat at least three times a day. It's funny that a little snack now (is more filling than a too-big pig-out used to be. You do get used to eating smaller portions - which is good for many reasons.

And, read the book. It is amazing how ignorant most of us are about what we put in our bodies. Learning something is helpful too. Seeing how some foods (esp. junk) have three or more days worth of carbs is a shock.

I am looking forward to increasing my carb intake, eventually. But so far I have the zeal of a true believer and I am taking advantage of this enthusiasm. Talk to people - there are so many on this regimen that it is hard to not find someone to talk to / commiserate with / learn from.

Even my doctor likes this "diet." Weight and BP have dropped significantly. And there are web resources (just Google 'Atkins" and dive in).

IF you are a true vegan, I am not sure how it could be done. But then, you probably would not be in much trouble weight-wise anyhow.

Good luck.

19. Tofu
comes to mind. It's pretty low carb. Though I think tempeh has a lot of carbs along with the protein. Do you eat eggs and cheese? Just wondering.

And you might want to consider expanding your repetoir of nuts to eat. Nuts are low carb, high calorie. Some options: Walnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, hazelnuts. No sugar added peanut butter is good also.

16. As a result I am also on this diet
you see Chilly_Willy and I live together. Since temptation is the destroyer of any and all diets, I can't be filling our tiny apartment with the lovely smell of pasta, thus I have been forced into this "diet" as well.

The only warning I recieved was the sight of a amazon.com box leaning against my front door. I thought about resisting this injustice but I was reminded (via a dirty look) that resistance would prove not only futile but dangerous as well.

uh...hehe I'm joking. Whatever makes Chilly happy makes me happy as well.

24. I started to PUKE after several days of eating Sub's
It's also expensive. It costs around $10.00 per day and I wish you luck on the diet because I started to puke after several days.
I love pickles and the smell of them now makes me sick.

Clip the coupons out of the paper and use them. Even if you are rich they are worth it. You can get 3 large sub's in Chicago for $10.00 dollars and you can also have the sauce or dressing put on the side that way they will keep longer.

Good Luck!

22. Yes, it works I lost 100 pounds on it one time
You have to stick to it strictly and if you cheat go right back on the diet but try not to cheat.
Remember your only cheating yourself if you cheat.

If you feel hungry eat some meat, chicken, cheese, or any other protein that is on the diet. I stayed away from the fried foods even though he tells people that they can have them.

Good Luck!
