I wish I lived in New York.
x(

So many of my favorite people live here. You can hear amazing jazz every night of the week.

And you can stay up half the night drinking with a friend from DU in a crazy bad piano bar with an out of tune piano where Thomas Paine died.

1. I hope you'll get the chance one of these days. While it's my
greatest wish to live in the country far from any settlement and noise and have the horses around me :)

6. I'm sure of it. And the prices for land and houses are supposed
to be low. Unfortunately I don't belong to these colonist types.

Ah, I'm sure my wish will be fulfilled one of these days. Probably when I'm too old and sick to tend house and garden and need to live in town for easy shopping and doctors nearby... "Don't wish for anything - it could be fulfilled".

3. I've been to New York a couple of times
But I never got to know any of the natives. If my few experiences with New Yorkers are any indication of what the majority is like then that is one cool town.

24. Carlos Santana, between songs at Radio City
said (I'm paraphrasing from memory) ~"I hope you all feel how spiritual this city is. You know people have prayed for centuries that all kinds of people could live together in peace. And they wondered too if that was even possible. But when I walk down the sidewalks in this city, it's undeniable. It's reality. To see people of different backgrounds not simply living in peace but respecting each other, seeking out what other cultures have to offer -- that is a profoundly spiritual experience."

Santana later said he likes to give his audience something to take away. He calls it "chewing gum for the soul."

7. Damn right you do!
As the late, great Mayor Lindsay used to say, "New York is a fun place!"

It's the best city ever, anywhere, in the entire galaxy and beyond (and you know there is a beyond). Lived there 10 years, it was a rare privilege. I've fallen in love with Chicago lately, but your post reminded me of my adopted home.

Now there's room to disagree on what I'm saying, don't get me wrong. Don't want to be one of those arrogant New Yorkers. After all, there may be nothing beyond our galaxy.

10. If you leave, which I did, it takes years to get used to the changes.
Chain yourself to the doors of your favorite restauranr or whatever, singing "we shall, we shall not be moved." It's worth it.

19. Doesn't your current state shut down if there's an inch of snow?
Just remember that over the course of the last two winters we have had three blizzards - three official blizzards. Over Jan-Feb-and March 2004 my electric bill was $350 per month and we went through nearly $1,200 worth of oil. We have the most expensive electricity in the nation.

Wait until you find out that it costs $61 to register your car for one year, or get a parking ticket that costs $120, or get a property tax bill that is nearly one month's salary.

You can't rent an apartment here unless you have the most sterling credit imaginable and even then you have to have assets coming out of your eyes.

And if, while waiting in line at Eckard's you don't have your money ready when you get to the cashier, your fellow New Yorkers will kill you and eat you. We are always in a RUSH, dammit. I suppose that's part of our charm. I will tell you that I once nearly killed a couple from the mid-west in Kennedy Airport. They were slow as molasses and I was dying to get home ...

I'm not trying to rain on your parade - just remember that every place has drawbacks, even NY, NY.

15. I was there last week
My family stayed 7 days and 6 nights. We took in a couple of Broadway shows and two wonderful museums. We left last thursday and took the train home. My 15 year old was going to cry as we checked out of the Doubletree in Times Square.

SO, since I've been home, back in a red state, I've been going through realtors webpages to see how close I can get to NYC. So far Connecticut and 130 miles away. Might have to do it.

21. really?
I found a house I like in Connecticut. I think the taxes are reasonable. New Jersey, taxes are sky high.

I don't think I can find anything on Long Island at this price. I grew up in Westchester so I'm familiar with Long Island. I know I can't afford anything in Westchester anymore.

25. That is very far from the city
True, it's in the relative vicinity, but you sure wouldn't be able to go there easily.

I'm not sure there is any place to work out there either. No state taxes in CT, thought. That's nice ...

16. Lived there for ten years.... and I still miss it.
But sunshine and warmth won out for me after 20 years in the frigid Northeast. California is a definite improvement over Florida, but there's no place like New York City.

22. I always thought the jazz would probably
be one of the best reasons to live there! ( plus the other great music and art and liberal diversity)

When we played at the Knitting Factory (my one NYC gig), I was more stunned/excited to be on a stage where so many avant jazz wildfolk had played the week before and since!)than to be playing there myself!

23. I wish I could at least visit sometime soon.
When I was a teenager, I dreamed of living in a beautiful apartment in Manhattan and being a hotshot in the advertising business. (Might as well dream big, right?)
