Emily is 1mph under Category 5. 155 MPH, 929 mb.
So far, she has the lowest pressure of any July storm. Look out, Cozumel.

Here's where it gets crazy. I'm hearing chatter that Emily may spin off of the Yucatan and then head NE. I don't buy this, but, evidently some people do. This prediction eminates from a guy who claims that he used to work at NHC and now works for Accuweather.

3. Here's where it gets even worse.
She hasn't even begun to cross the warmest waters of the Carribean, and then once she crosses the Yucatan, there are warm gulf waters ahead.

...of the really warm water now. Isn't it amazing having such maps available-- not to mention the direct sat imagery!

22. Yeah, but...
The Yucatan is going to take a LOT out of her. Hurricanes can't sustain top level winds for more than a few miles inland. The center of that storm is going to lose a lot of mass when going over the peninsula and will likely undergo an ERC during that time to stabilize itself and form another eye.

The different colors and the cloud formations really grab my attention. So beautiful yet so destructive.

4. Emily looks to be one nasty-ass storm. Wowza
Guess my daughter in AZ will get her monsoon air-flow soon.

Pity the poor souls in the path of that monster! Will be watching and worrying about you MM, should that turn to the NE materialize. Get on a hill, girl!

Oh, how'd the thing about the airconditioner turn out? Been here intermittantly of late and was wondering if it worked or if you had to take it back. (Yeah, I worry about strange things & people I only know through DU.... what can I say, just an ol softie ;) )

8. I'm more worried about my relatives who live on the Texas coast...
I'm glad that they are far east of the projected path.

The only way I have anything to worry about is if Emily decides to visit Bourbon Street. I'm due north of NOLA.

I took the AC back and returned it for a smaller one. Stupid me...my window is 28" wide, and I had bought a 32" unit. We are supposed to install it tomorrow. How's everything with you? I've been watching the weather channel and I'm concerned about all of the people with wildfires nearby. :hi:

11. Fires around here are north of the lake in the CMR. So far, so good
Lots of rain which is good but also means a whole lot more plant growth and fuel when it dries out. There have been some showers this eveing but not really any lightening.

The BLM keeps a little squad of firefighters here in summer to get moving fast if the need arises. Big concern is that most of our state Guardsmen are in Iraq, along with all but one of the helicopters. Gov has been pounding the administration because he wants the guard and teh helicpoters HERE where they are supposed to be.

Wheat fields look good and the cows are full and chewing cud by 9AM, belly high grass is a rare thing in this arid country.

I need to get some photos in an online album and post the links for the evilDUers ;) Pretty around here this year

20. These are where all hurricanes form in the Continent
These are extremely strong storms in Africa and this is where hurricanes start.
but either they get further strength when they reach the atlantic
or dissipate over the continent,
If you are mindful of weather patterns(hurricanes) you need to find satellite pictures below the equator, eastern atlantic since the winds travel in that direction below the equator because of the effect of the earth's rotation
then they spin off into the atlantic creating a life of their own.

These storms in africa are huge as compared to other past pictures I have seen at this same time in the season. You can study this in time frames available at satellite sites. I never use the weather channel, they get their info from these sites.

9. My guess is that it kisses the tip...
... of the Yucatan and makes landfall north of Brownsville. Padre Islands and Corpus get the brunt of it. Even if it stays on a linear course, Brownsville will get pounded--there's a lot of open, warm water after it passes the Yucatan to build energy.

But, you're right, it's a really big storm for this early in the season.

this is from flhurricane.com...this guy answering a question from another poster is somebody I know of and have reason to trust his judgement as far a tropical weather is concerned. here's what he thinks:

Re: Emily Gets Stronger

Stronger storms do have a tendency to move a bit further north -- with the upper level flow -- than do weaker storms, but given the current flow pattern, there isn't a lot other than wobbling and the effects of Coriolis to help to move it off towards the north. It might move a little bit more WNW as it nears the Yucutan, but unless the western extent of the subtropical ridge erodes to some degree, it may well turn back moreso towards the west.

That's some amazing footage. I wonder if Emily will be stronger than Andrew from '95. Looks like it might landfall in Texas but thats somewhere around Tuesday, so anythings possible.
