Question about doctor-patient confidentiality and the "War on Drugs."
I've suffered with sciatica for about 15 years now. MRIs (most recently a few months ago) show disc degeneration and protrusion, which evidently can be common, but not enough to explain the level of discomfort & pain I've experienced over the years.

Been to many chiropractors for relief, none of which was long-lasting. Tried tai-chi and learned I have some other body issues which I didn't realize before, from an undiagnosed birth defect.

Enough background. My point is this: while going to a neurologist for yet another opinion, I revealed on the patient questionnaire my use of cannabis for pain management and relief (I am very against NSAIDs & epidurals that have been recommended and the neurologist wasn't pleased with this and said I am 'difficult') and I want to know if this disclosure of my admission is required by this neurologist to the Feds.

I had misgivings about mentioning it in the first place and only did so because I am in earnest about getting to the bottom of my condition. He then of course wrote up our consultation in detail and forwarded it to my regular doctor so now it's in my file. I regret ever bringing it up.

What can happen next? What is the medical community required to do when a patient reveals cannabis use? Will my doctors turn me in?

1. I don't believe that they are allowed to turn you in
I believe that such things are supposed to be confidential.
Even if it wasn't, unless you specifically said that you grow your own supply at your house, there really isn't any evidence of a crime (provided that you are not on probation). Depending on the state, possessing small amounts of marijuana is a relatively minor crime. If it is something that you possessed in the past, because you consumed your supply already and are not currently high, there is no crime tha they can charge you with.
Most police departments wouldn't investigate someone who may or may not be possession of a small amount of marijuana.

2. I think the only way that they can turn you in is if...
you are telling them that you are going to commit a crime in the future. Saying that you've smoked pot is no crime. Telling the neurologist that you are going to so and so's house at 6:00 to pick up your stash or like the previous poster said that if you have a farm in your basement, I think he could report you. I'd say the use of pot as a pain reliever is much better than the filth big pharma is pushing down your throat.
