Pack it nicely in a computer bag. Don't just schlep it into your bookbag without a fare-thee-well like I did all last year. Now my DVD drive pops open at the slightest contact, and the plastic strip covering the drive pops off all the time. Also, the laptop lid has marks all over it instead of being uniformly silver and shiny as it would normally be.
1. Laptop bags have a red neon sign that says "Steal Me"
Better to better pack your laptop for transport. Or if you possibly can, get a Toughbook or the like. (I know, I know, we all have $3K lying around for new hardware...)
2. I use a backpack or non-laptop looking bag when I travel
Put the laptop in a shipping wrapper that probably came with your laptop when you bought it. It should be big enough to completely swallow the laptop and then some.
Wrapping it in a towel or putting a wrapped towel in the bottom of the backpack/bag cushions it from bangs...
Of course, get one of those laptop locks and lock it when you're at a public place...who cares if you get the rolling eye stare from somebody...
Having had a couple laptops stolen over the years, putting a laptop in an obvious (and usually heavy) laptop bag signals the jackals to try to five-finger your possession.
