2. I think it is up to you. At least that is what I always thought from
reading comments from other sellers. Give the buyer a deadline, if he/she hasn't paid for the item by then, tell them that you are going to put it up for bidding again.

3. Hubband thinks it's
either 5 or 7 days. He also thinks that he has seen people put their own guidelines in their item entry. He says the rules on ebay are difficult to find and sift thru.

4. File a complaint with EBay
Let the creep know what you're deadline is. If he doesn't follow through, file the complaint and then negative feedback.

What I hate about negative feedback is that the jerk gets to pollute your ratings...

8. I wouldn't worry about retaliatory feedback from a non-payer.
Going through all the channels (up to and including getting one's final value fee credit from eBay) and then leaving factual, non-emotional negative feedback on the bidder doesn't leave him much to neg the seller about. If he does, he looks ridiculous and vindictive, and it shouldn't have a negative impact on the seller himself.

Many times, by the time I got around to leaving negative feedback for non-payers, I couldn't, because they had already been NARU'd. I have never had retaliatory feedback from a non-payer.

5. That's your call.
When I run auctions, I specify in my auction terms that payments must be received within 10 days of the auction's end.

If you do not have terms specified in your auction, you can set terms now. Send an email to your bidder giving him a deadline by which to pay. If he has not paid by then, file a non-paying bidder report (or whatever they are calling it these days - I can try to dig up the link for you if you want) and relist the item. Do not leave feedback until you've completed the non-paying bidder process and received your final value fees back from eBay. Once you have received your fee credit, leave a non-emotional, factual feedback (i.e. "Non-pay; EOA xx/xx/xx, received FVFC xx/xx/xx") That indicates the person did not pay, notes the date of the end of the auction and the date you received your fees back from eBay.

But first things first. Give your bidder a deadline.

6. You can file an unpaid item dispute after 7 days
I don't think ebay suggests a certain payment window. Many sellers specify in their listing what they consider reasonable (me: 7-10 days if they're mailing a check/mo).
In the future, you can require immediate payment through Paypal. Good luck to you! I've been there!

7. so many sellers give buyers 7 or even 10 days
that you might want to wait a while. It could be an honest misunderstanding.

Or has he/she actually contacted you but not paid? That would probably be different.

9. Check out what other sellers do. And there is plenty of ebay ettiquette
procedure advice at ebay. I once never paid a guy on a real cheap item and he never gave a crap either -- it was a two dollar item. But I know a friend who had a cold feet buyer. Pain.

10. If they've contacted you and have good feedback, I would wait longer
Since you say run-around I gather there has been contact. Five days is above average and annoying but not necessarily indicative of a non-payer, IMO. Check their feedback and see if they have received positives from other sellers. If there are positives from sellers but the feedback doesn't say anything about, "rapid payment," this eBayer may simply take a while to pay.

On one occasion the buyer completely ignored me for weeks, despite repeated emails. She was bidding and winning and paying on other items at the same time but never contacted me. It was a left handed golf club she bought from me, while her other golf purchases were right handed.

I kept emailing her asking for a courtesy response, that if she made a mistake I would like to offer the club to the second high bidder. Finally after several weeks I made a formal complaint thru ebay and left negative feedback for her. She didn't leave feedback for me.

11. I give my buyers ten days.
I always write specifically in my item description "Payment must be received ten days after auction end. If not, I will relist the item and give a negative feedback."
