Pet Peeve thread
Just because we haven't had one in a while and I was bombarded with one of mine today.

People who speak with sibilant s's. You know, they sort of hissssss the s.

"Sssso, Ssssadie and I went to get ssssushi and sssaw Sssselma and her ssssissster there...."

I realize it's a sssmall (whoops) thing and there are a lot of other things to get annoyed with but it grates on my ears like fingernails on a blackboard.

What's your pet peeve?

2. When a new register opens and
the people from the back of the longest line rush to be the first in the new one.

Isn't that why clerks are supposed to ask for the next in line?!?

I actually speak up about this when I see it happen now, I get so incensed. :grr:

4. As a grocery store worker
I assure you that I make sure people come to my line in the order they were waiting. I won't let rude slobs butt ahead in line. Yeah, that one bothers me, too.

6. Thank you!!!
It's small, but it says so much about people's sense of entitlement.

12. What about the whole
Express lane... no more than 10 items, then you have some chump who strolls up there with 30 items? That pisses me off!!!

Curious, these types... do you ever ask them to go to the non-express lane? My grocery store dosen't!!!

13. Darn right I do!
I think often the problem is the checker is too insecure to be assertive. I have no problems there.

If there is no line at express and a customer comes up with a few items over the limit, I will take them with no problem. If there's a line, I'll politely tell them to go to a regular checkout and if they give me a hassle, I'll tell them bluntly that I am not checking them out. Period. And I won't.

I once had a lady walk up to express and start dumping a full cart full of groceries on the belt. Before I could speak, she snapped, "I know it's express but you ARE going to check me out!"

I said, "No, I'm not", signed off my register and left her there.

17. This Happened To Me Recently... The Cashier Made NO ANNOUNCEMENT...
... instead she quietly came over to the next few people in line and whispered "come with me, I'm opening up another register".

Very nice!

19. That's how we do it
Physically choose the person to come to your line. Prevents a lot of stress.

5. Yup
Grammar and spelling errors drive me nuts. Another is when people use an apostrophe for a plural. Like "I have two cat's."

9. Or people who won't put their cell phone down while they are paying
Like their conversation is so important it can't wait the 30 second it takes for them to pay the cashier.

8. When someone cannot use the right form of to, too, or two.
Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 05:15 PM by Fox Mulder
To = many different meanings, but not "also" or "the number two". See here.
Too = besides, also, or excessive
Two = the number 2

10. People who are too lazy to start sentences or threads with a simple "I"
Instead, you get "Saw a movie today"

"Watched a clown today"

"Did something today"

Fuck off, lamer

14. People on the bus with huge backpacks that keep banging into me
I swear, last week some girl gets on with this enormous back pack full of crap, and banged into a lady, who politely asked her to move. So she did - she swung it around and it hit me.

This is not a college campus. This is on a bus going downtown. I don't understand why people have to haul so much crap with them wherever they go.
