Perhaps he made that false statement to an FBI official, for example.

I don't know the exact details of the charge.

For example, one could conceivably get up on the witness stand during a murder trial, lie blatantly about one's age and still not be guilty of perjury. Age of an individual in such matters is rarely relevant.

But if that same individual lied on the stand about seeing the murder committed by the defendant, it's perjury.
