I don't know if I can really explain why... for me the Godfather II though still great seems colder emotionally, because it's about Michael running the family after his succession. I know it's SUPPOSED to be that way because of Michael's nature, and how he does things, and that's why he ends up the way he does at the film's conclusion, with the "flashback" dinner scene to paint the contrast... but that sense of family and warmth from the first movie (even though there's garrotings, horse's heads, street corner thrashings, and tollbooth swiss cheesings) made it more enjoyable for me than its sequel.
My favorite part of II is the interweaving of "old" (young Vito) and new scenes.
I DID really like the scene with Senator Geary in Fredo's brothel... "nothing will be left... but our friendship". Now THAT is some cold blooded shizzle.
When you watch these movies there's still so many cool details. Godfather I: While Jack Woltz rants and raves about why Johnny Fontaine never gets that picture, Duvall/Hagen calmly eats his soup while enduring the tirade, and at the end, gets up "Thanks for a wonderful evening, etc... the Don insists on hearing bad news right away" etc...
