Songs about nuclear war
I'm putting together a new playlist, and need your suggestions for songs about nuclear war or the end of the world. Suggestions?

1. Interesting choice of playlist topic. "99 Luft Balloons" by Nena
is the first song that came to my mind.

Also, I've never figure out exactly how this is so, but I recall hearing that Tear for Fears' "Shout" concerned nuclear war.

Out of curiosity I just looked this up on google and found an entire alphabetical list of 80s songs about nuclear war: http://www.inthe80s.com/nuclearwar/index.shtml.

4. That list is actually the inspiration
I love beautiful songs about horrible things.

8. Same here, especially the eerily beautiful songs.
Always better than horrible songs about beautiful things, of which there are far too many.

11. I also love shipwreck songs
As I see it, singing's a great expression of pain. Sure, I can't sing, but that doesn't mean I *don't* sing--loudly and badly--when my limbic system's taking a dump all over me.

Edited on Fri Nov-11-05 04:08 AM by JVS

C:... is now and ever shall be. World without end. Amen. Ameeeeen Ameeeen Ameeeeeeen.
P: The heavens declare the glory of the Bomb, and the firmament showeth His handiwork.
C: His sound has gone out unto all the land. And his light unto the end of the world.
P: He descendeth from the outermost part of heaven and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof. There is neither speech nor language, yet his voice is heard among them.
C: Praise him praise him, my strength and my redeemer.
P: Glory be to the bomb and to the holy fallout as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world witout end. Amen.
C: Amen. Amen Amen Amen.
P: Oh mighty and everlasting bomb, who came down among us to make heaven under earth, lighten our darkness oh instrument of god. Grant us thy peace.
C: Almighty bomb, who destroyed all devils, and created angels. Behold his coming!

3. Pearl Jam..."Do the Evolution"....
Pearl Jam
Do the Evolution

Woo..
I'm ahead, I'm a man
I'm the first mammal to wear pants, yeah
I'm at peace with my lust
I can kill 'cause in God I trust, yeah
It's evolution, baby

I'm at piece, I’m the man
Buying stocks on the day of the crash
On the loose, I'm a truck
All the rolling hills, I’ll flatten’ em out, yeah
It's herd behavior, uh huh
It's evolution, baby

Admire me, admire my home
Admire my song, here's my coat
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
This land is mine, this land is free
I'll do what I want but irresponsibly
It's evolution, baby

I'm a thief, I'm a liar
There's my church, I sing in the choir:
(hallelujah… hallelujah…)

Admire me, admire my home
Admire my song, admire my clothes
'Cause we know, appetite for a nightly feast
Those ignorant Indians got nothin' on me
Nothin', why?
Because, it's evolution, baby!

I am ahead, I am advanced
I am the first mammal to make plans, yeah
I crawled the earth, but now I'm higher
Twenty-ten, watch it go to fire
It's evolution, baby (2X)
Do the evolution
Come on, come on, come on

5. XTC -- "Living Through Another Cuba"
Living through another cuba
It's 1961 again and we are piggy in the middle
While war is polishing his drum and peace plays second fiddle

Russia and america are at each other's throats
But don't you cry
Just on your knees and pray, and while you're
Down there, kiss your arse goodbye

We're the bulldog on the fence
While others play their tennis overhead
It's hardly love all and somebody might
Wind up red or dead
Pour some oil on the water quick
It doesn't really matter where from
He love me, he loves me not
He's pulling fins from an atom bomb

This phenomenon happens every 20 years or so
If they're not careful your watch won't be the
Only thing with a radioactive glow
I'll stick my fingers in my ears
And hope they make it up before too late
If we get through this lot alright
They're due for replay, 1998

65. Whew... "This World Over" gives me shivers.
That's their best record, IMHO.

Incidentally, I have the 7" single to This World Over". It comes with a completer set of "holiday postcards" that say "Greetings from London", and depict a smouldering sea of rubble.

6. So Long Mom I'm Off To Drop The Bomb by Tom Lehrer
So long, Mom,
I'm off to drop the bomb,
So don't wait up for me,
But while you swelter
Down there in your shelter,
You can see me
On your T.V.

While we're attacking frontally,
Watch Brinkally and Huntally
Describing contrapuntally
The cities we have lost.
No need for you to miss a minute
Of the agonizing holocaust.

Little Johnny Jones, he was a U.S. pilot,
And no shrinking vi'let was he.
He was mighty proud when World War III was declared,
He wasn't scared, no siree!
And this is what he said on
His way to Armageddon:

So long, Mom,
I'm off to drop the bomb,
So don't wait up for me,
But though I may roam,
I'll come back to my home,
Although it may be
A pile of debris.

Remember, Mommy,
I'm off to get a commie,
So send me a salami,
And try to smile somehow.
I'll look for you when the war is over,
An hour and a half from now!

40. Who's next by Tom Lehrer.
A classic.

First we got the bomb and that was good,
'Cause we love peace and motherhood.
Then Russia got the bomb, but that's O.K.,
'Cause the balance of power's maintained that way!
Who's next?

France got the bomb, but don't you grieve,
'Cause they're on our side (I believe).
China got the bomb, but have no fears;
They can't wipe us out for at least five years!*
Who's next?

Then Indonesia claimed that they
Were gonna get one any day.
South Africa wants two, that's right:
One for the black and one for the white!**
Who's next?

Egypt's gonna get one, too,
Just to use on you know who.
So Israel's getting tense,
Wants one in self defense.
"The Lord's our shepherd," says the psalm,
But just in case, we better get a bomb!
Who's next?

Luxembourg is next to go
And, who knows, maybe Monaco.
We'll try to stay serene and calm
When Alabama gets the bomb!
Who's next, who's next, who's next?
Who's next?

7. The Clash -- "London Calling"

"London Calling"

London calling to the faraway towns
Now war is declared, and battle come down
London calling to the underworld
Come out of the cupboard, you boys and girls
London calling, now don't look to us
Phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust
London calling, see we ain't got no swing
'Cept for the ring of that truncheon thing

The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in
Meltdown expected, the wheat is growing thin
Engines stop running, but I have no fear
'Cause London is drowning, and I live by the river

London calling to the imitation zone
Forget it, brother, you can go it alone
London calling to the zombies of death
Quit holding out, and draw another breath
London calling, and I don't wanna shout
But when we were talking, I saw you nodding out
London calling, see we ain't got no high
Except for that one with the yellowy eyes

The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in
Engines stop running, the wheat is growing thin
A nuclear era, but I have no fear
'Cause London is drowning, and I live by the river

Now get this

London calling, yes, I was there, too
An' you know what they said? Well, some of it was true!
London calling at the top of the dial
After all this, won't you give me a smile?
London calling

I never felt so much alike alike alike alike

10. Red Skies by The Fixx.
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 03:36 AM by Crazy Guggenheim
Red skies at night, red skies at night
Wo oh, wo oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Red skies at night, red skies at night
Wo oh, wo oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Should have taken warning
It's just, people mourning, running, hiding, lost
You can't find, find a place to go
So it's red skies at night, red skies at night
Wo oh, wo oh oh oh oh
Should have taken warning
It's just, people mourning, running, hiding, lost
You can't find, find a place to go
So it's red skies at night, red skies at night
Wo oh, wo oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Red skies at night, red skies at night
Wo oh, wo oh oh
Someone's taking over
And it looks like they're aiming right at you
Someone says, "We'll be dead by morning"
Someone cries, leaving
Red eyes at night, red eyes at night
Oh, wo oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Red skies at night, red skies at night, red skies at night (4x)
Red {echo}
Skies {echo}
At {echo}
Night
Red skies at night, red skies at night
Wo oh, wo oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Red skies at night, red skies at night
Wo oh, wo oh oh oh oh oh

12. Wooden Ships - CSN&Y
Artist: Crosby Stills Nash Young
Song: Wooden Ships

(UPS) EARTH JULY 1975
Black sails knifing through the pitchblende night
Away from the radioactive landmass madness
From the silver-suited people searching out
Uncontaminated food and shelter on the shores
No glowing metal on our ship of wood only
Free happy crazy people naked in the universe
WE SPEAK EARTH TALK
GO RIDE THE MUSIC

If you smile at me you know I will understand
Cause that is something everybody everywhere does
In the same language
I can see by your coat my friend that you're from the other side
There's just one thing I got to know
Can you tell me please who won
You must try some of my purple berries
I been eating them for six or seven weeks now
Haven't got sick once
Probably keep us both alive

Wooden ships on the water very free and easy
Easy you know the way it's supposed to be
Silver people on the shoreline leave us be
Very free and easy

Sail away where the mornin sun goes high
Sail away where the wind blows sweet and young birds fly
Take a sister by her hand
Lead her far from this barren land
Horror grips us as we watch you die
All we can do is echo your anguished cry and
Stare as all you human feelings die
We are leaving
You don't need us

Go and take a sister by her hand
Lead her far from this foreign land
Somewhere where we might laugh again
We are leaving
You don't need us

Sailing ships on the water very free and easy
Easy you know the way it's supposed to be
Silver people on the shoreline leave us be
Very free
And gone
NO C'MON
GO RIDE THE MUSIC
C'MON RIDE IT CHILD

13. maybe I am mistaken but what about this one?

They’re pickin’ up the prisoners and puttin’
’em in the pen
And all she wants to do is dance, dance
Rebels been rebels since I don’t know when
And all she wants to do is dance
Molotov cocktail-the local drink
And all she wants to do is dance, dance
They mix ’em up right in the kitchen sink
And all she wants to do is dance
Crazy people walkin’ round
With blood in their eyes
And all she wants to do is dance, dance
Wild-eyed pistol wavers
Who ain’t afraid to die
And all she wants to do is-
And all she wants to do is dance
And make romance
She can’t feel the heat comin’ off the street
She wants to party
She wants to get down
And all she wants to do is-
And all she wants to do is dance
Well, the government bugged the men’s
Room in the local disco lounge
And all she wants to do is dance, dance
To keep the boys from sellin’
All the weapons they could scrounge
And all she wants to do is dance
But that don’t keep the boys
From makin’ a buck or two
And all she wants to do is dance, dance
They still can sell the army
All the drugs that they can do
And all she wants to do is-
And all she wants to do is dance
And make romance
Well, we barely made the airport
For the last plane out
As we taxied down the runway
I could hear the people shout
They said, don’t come back here yankee!
But if I ever do-
I’ll bring more money
’cause all she wants to do is dance
And make romance
Never mind the hear comin’ off the street
She wants to party
She wants to get down
All she wants to do is-
All she wants to do is dance
All she wants to do is dance
And make romance
All she wants to do is dance

14. Randy Newman
Political Science

No one likes us-i don’t know why
We may not be perfect, but heaven knows we try
But all around, even our old friends put us down
Let’s drop the big one and see what happens

We give them money-but are they grateful?
No, they’re spiteful and they’re hateful
They don’t respect us-so let’s surprise them
We’ll drop the big one and pulverize them

Asia’s crowded and europe’s too old
Africa is far too hot
And canada’s too cold
And south america stole our name
Let’s drop the big one
There’ll be no one left to blame us

We’ll save australia
Don’t wanna hurt no kangaroo
We’ll build an all american amusement park there
They got surfin’, too

Boom goes london and boom paree
More room for you and more room for me
And every city the whole world round
Will just be another american town
Oh, how peaceful it will be
We’ll set everybody free
You’ll wear a japanese kimono
And there’ll be italian shoes for me

They all hate us anyhow
So let’s drop the big one now
Let’s drop the big one now

16. Here's a little gem from 1986...
Just where is our future, the things we've done and said!
Let's just push the button, we'd be better off dead!
'Cause I hate you!
And I berate you!
And I can't wait to get to you!

The sins of all our fathers, being dumped on us — the sons.
The only choice we're given is how many megatons?
And I eschew you!
And I say, screw you!
And I hope you're blue, too.

We're all bloody worthless, just greedy human scum.
The numbers all add up to a negative sum.

And I hate you!
And I hate you!
And I hate you...too!

74. no, it was written by Kirk
Kirk Thatcher that is, who was promoted to assistant producer

"The punk on the bus is 'Thatcher, Kirk (I)' (associate producer), who also wrote and performed the song that is playing on his stereo at the time."

I wondered too, but I checked the credits on the movie and then looked it up.

19. Into The Void ~ Black Sabbath
:headbang:

Rocket engines burning fuel so fast
Up into the night sky they blast
Through the universe the engines whine
Could it be the end of man and time
Back on earth the flame of life burns low
Everywhere is misery and woe
Pollution kills the air, the land and sea
Man prepares to meet his destiny
Rocket engines burning fuel so fast
Up into the night sky so vast
Burning metal through the atmosphere
Earth remains in worry, hate and fear
With the hateful battles raging on
Rockets flying to the glowing sun
Through the empires of eternal void
Freedom from the final suicide

Freedom fighters sent out to the sun
Escape from brainwashed minds and pollution.
Leave the earth to all it’s sin and hate
Find another world where freedom waits.
Past the stars in fields of ancient void
Through the shields of darkness where they find
Love upon a land a world unknown
Where the sons of freedom make their home

Leave the earth to satan and his slaves
Leave them to their future in the grave
Make a home where love is there to stay

68. Electric Funeral
Reflex in the sky warn you you're gonna die
Storm coming, you'd better hide from the atomic tide
Flashes in the sky turns houses into sties
Turns people into clay, radiation minds decay

Robot minds of robot slaves lead them to atomic rage
plastic flowers, melting sun, fading moon falls upon
dying world of radiation, victims of mad frustration
Burning globe of oxy'n fire, like electric funeral pyre

Buildings crashing down to a cracking ground
Rivers turn to wood, ice melting to flood
Earth lies in death bed, clouds cry water dead
Tearing life away, here's the burning pay

Electric Funeral
Electric Funeral
Electric Funeral
Electric Funeral

And so in the sky shines the electric eye
supernatural king takes earth under his wing
Heaven's golden chorus sings, Hell's angels flap their wings
Evil souls fall to Hell, ever trapped in burning cells!

24. Eve of Destruction -Barry Maguire
Eve Of Destruction
By Barry McGuire, 1965

The eastern world it tis explodin',
violence flarin', bullets loadin',
you're old enough to kill but not for votin',
you don't believe in war, what's that gun you're totin',
and even the Jordan river has bodies floatin',
but you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Don't you understand, what I'm trying to say?
Can't you see the fear that I'm feeling today?
If the button is pushed, there's no running away,
There'll be no one to save with the world in a grave,
take a look around you, boy, it's bound to scare you, boy,
but you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Yeah, my blood's so mad, feels like coagulatin',
I'm sittin' here, just contemplatin',
I can't twist the truth, it knows no regulation,
handful of Senators don't pass legislation,
and marches alone can't bring integration,
when human respect is disintegratin',
this whole crazy world is just too frustratin',
and you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Think of all the hate there is in Red China!
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama!
Ah, you may leave here, for four days in space,
but when your return, it's the same old place,
the poundin' of the drums, th pride and disgrace,
you can bury your dead, but don't leave a trace,
hate your next-door-neighbour, but don't forget to say grace,
and you tell me over and over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

25. Time Zone - "World Destruction"
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 09:06 AM by swag
The B-side with Walter Mondale's sampled voice repeating "Mister Reagan . . . Mi Mi Mi Mi Mi Mister Reagan" is also quite good, as is the video with John Lydon and Afrika Bambaataa.

28. "Watcher of the Skies" by Genesis
Watcher of the skies, watcher of all
His is a world alone, no world is his own,
He whom life can no longer surprise,
Raising his eyes beholds a planet unknown.

Creatures shaped this planet's soil,
Now their reign has come to an end,
Has life again destroyed life,
Do they play elsewhere, or do they know
more than their childhood games?
Maybe the lizard's shed it's tail.
This is the end of man's union with Earth.

Judge not this race by empty remains
Do you judge God by his creatures when they are dead?
For now the lizard's shed it's tail.
This is the end of man's union with Earth.

From life alone to life as one,
Think not your journey done
For though your ship be sturdy, no
Mercy has the sea,
Will you survive on the ocean of being,
Come, ancient children, hear what I say
This is my parting council for you on your way.

Sadly now your thoughts turn to the stars
Where we have gone you know you never can go.
Watcher of the skies, watcher of all
This is your fate alone, this fate is your own.

45. No, that was by Tom Lehrer, again
When you attend a funeral,
It is sad to think that sooner or'l
Later those you love will do the same for you.
And you may have thought it tragic,
Not to mention other adjec-
Tives, to think of all the weeping they will do.
(But don't you worry.)

No more ashes, no more sackcloth,
And an arm band made of black cloth
Will some day nevermore adorn a sleeve.
For if the bomb that drops on you
Gets your friends and neighbors too,
There'll be nobody left behind to grieve.

And we will all go together when we go.
What a comforting fact that is to know.
Universal bereavement,
An inspiring achievement,
Yes, we will all go together when we go.

We will all go together when we go.
All suffused with an incandescent glow.
No one will have the endurance
To collect on his insurance,
Lloyd's of London will be loaded when they go.

Oh we will all fry together when we fry.
We'll be french fried potatoes by and by.
There will be no more misery
When the world is our rotisserie,
Yes, we will all fry together when we fry.

Down by the old maelstrom,
There'll be a storm before the calm.

And we will all bake together when we bake.
There'll be nobody present at the wake.
With complete participation
In that grand incineration,
Nearly three billion hunks of well-done steak.

Oh we will all char together when we char.
And let there be no moaning of the bar.
Just sing out a Te Deum
When you see that I.C.B.M.,*
And the party will be come-as-you-are.

Oh, we will all burn together when we burn.
There'll be no need to stand and wait your turn.
When it's time for the fallout
And Saint Peter calls us all out,
We'll just drop our agendas and adjourn.

You will all go directly to your respective Valhallas.
Go directly, do not pass Go, do not collect two hundred dollahs.

And we will all go together when we go.
Every Hottentot and every Eskimo.
When the air becomes uranious,
We will all go simultaneous.
Yes, we all will go together
When we all go together,
Yes we all will go together when we go.

33. Dire Straits - Industrial Disease
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 09:47 AM by Dont_Bogart_the_Pret
Not much "nucler" but nice beat. :hippie:

Industrial Disease
Warning lights are flashing down at Quality Control
somebody threw a spanner and they threw him in the hole
there's rumors in the loading bay and anger in the town
somebody blew the whistle and the walls came down
there's a meeting in the boardroom they're trying to trace the smell
there's leaking in the washroom there's a sneak in personnel
somewhere in the corridors someone was heard to sneeze
'goodness me could this be Industrial Disease?

The caretaker was crucified for sleeping at his post
they're refusing to be pacified it's him they blame the most
the watchdog's got rabies the foreman's got fleas
and everyone's concerned about Industrial Disease
there's panic on the switchboard tongues are ties in knots
some come out in sympathy some come out in spots
some blame the management some the employees
and everybody knows it's the Industrial Disease

The work force is disgusted downs tools and walks
innocence is injured experience just talks
everyone seeks damages and everyone agrees
that these are 'classic symptoms of a monetary squeeze'
on ITV and BBC they talk about the curse
philosophy is useless theology is worse
history boils over there's an economics freeze
sociologists invent words that mean 'Industrial Disease'

Doctor Parkinson declared 'I'm not surprised to see you here
you've got smokers cough from smoking brewer's droop from drinking beer
I don't know how you came to get the Bette Davis knees
but worst of all young man you've got Industrial Disease'
he wrote me a prescription he said 'you are depressed
but I'm glad you came to see me to get this off your chest
come back and see me later - next patient please
send in another victim of Industrial Disease'

I go down to Speaker's Corner I'm thunderstruck
they got free speech, tourists, police in trucks
two men say they're Jesus one of them must be wrong
there's a protest singer singing a protest song - he says
'they wanna have a war so they can keep us on our knees
they wanna have a war so they can keep their factories
they wanna have a war to stop us buying Japanese
they wanna have a war to stop Industrial Disease
they're pointing out the enemy to keep you deaf and blind
they wanna sap your energy incarcerate your mind
they give you Rule Brittania, gassy beer, page three
two weeks in Espana and Sunday striptease'
meanwhile the first Jesus says 'I'd cure it soon
abolish monday mornings and friday afternoons'
the other one's out on hunger strick he's dying by degrees
how come Jesus gets Industrial Disease

38. Roger Waters - Folded Flags
from "When The Wind Blows" soundtrack

"Folded Flags"

Rock a bye baby
On the tree top
When the wind blows
The cradle will rock
And babe, hate to see you fall that way
Better speak to the palace than to be today

Hey Joe, where you goin'
With that gun in your hand?
You can take your revenge
But you'll still feel bad
There must be more to life than lucky strikes
And some unlucky ones
And folded flags and pipes
And drums

I stood in the wings with you
Our lives in the hands of a second-rate actor
Holding the high ground
On some old stage
And babe, how do these cheated stores get so far away
Will they catch you at the bottom

Hey Joe, where you goin'
With that dogma in your head?
You can prove your point,
But your kids will still be dead
Bring down the curtain
The soap opera must surely close
Before the cold wind blows

Hey Joe, where you goin'
with that gun in your hand
You can take your revenge
But you'll still feel bad
Bring down the curtain
The show must close
Before the cold wind blows

So rock a bye baby
On the tree top
When the wind blows
The cradle will rock
There must be more to life than lucky strikes
And some unlucky ones
And folded flags and pipes
And drums

41. The Sun Is Burning ~ Simon and Garfunkel
The sun is burning in the sky
Strands of clouds go slowly drifting by
In the park the lazy breeze
Are joining in the flowers, among the trees
And the sun burns in the sky

Now the sun is in the West
Little kids go home to take their rest
And the couples in the park
Are holdin' hands and waitin' for the dark
And the sun is in the West

Now the sun is sinking low
Children playin' know it's time to go
High above a spot appears
A little blossom blooms and then draws near
And the sun is sinking low

Now the sun has come to Earth
Shrouded in a mushroom cloud of death
Death comes in a blinding flash
Of hellish heat and leaves a smear of ash
And the sun has come to Earth

Now the sun has disappeared
All is darkness, anger, pain and fear
Twisted, sightless wrecks of men
Go groping on their knees and cry in pain
And the sun has disappeared

42. Yo La Tengo - Nuclear War
There are actually 4 versions of the song, a rerecording of an experimental piece written by Jazz eccentric Sun Ra, released on a single disk. Version 4 is by far my favorite for no other reason than it features a chorus of 7-year-olds and it's shorter than version 3 which stretches to almost 16 minutes.

Nuclear war.
Nuclear war.
They're talkin' about Nuclear war.
It's a motherfucker, don't you know? If they push that button your ass got to go.
Gonna blast you So high in the sky. You can kiss your ass
Goodbye, goodbye.
Radiation, Mutation. Fire.
Hydrogen bombs, Atomic bombs.
What you gonna do, Without your ass?
Melting... People... Buildings...
Burnt grass... Farewell. Goodbye, ass.
(Repeat x7, call and response)

by Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Quintessential Reagan-era paranoia. Find a British 12" single - mindblowing sound.

Ladies and gentlemen, let me present
Frankie goes to hollywood
Possibly the most important thing
This side of the world.

Oh yeah, well ard!

You may pronounce us guilty a thousand times over, but the goddess of the
Eternal court of history will smile and tear to tatters the brief of the
State prosecutor and the sentence of this court, for she acquits us
Condemn me
Condemn me
Condemn me
History will absolve
Singing this will be the day that I die.
Yeahhhhhaaaa
(if your grandmother or any other member of your family should die whilst in the shelter,
Put them outside, but remember to tag them first for identification purposes.)
Go to war
Go to war
Go to war
Heh
Just think, war breaks out and nobody turns up.
(if any member the family should die whilst in the shelter, put them outside,
But remember to tag them first for identification purposes.)
(if your grandmother or any other member of the family should die whil... ...dentification purposes.)
Heh heh
It’s enough to make you wonder sometimes if you’re on the right planet.

Let’s go

*when two tribes go to war
A point is all you can score
When two tribes go to war
A point is all you can score

Cowboy no. 1
A born-again poor man’s son
On the air america
I modelled shirts by van heusen-yeah

You know

*(repeat)

Working on the black gas

Switch off your shield
Switch off and feel
I’m working on loving-yeah
Giving you back the good times
Ship it out-out
I’m working for the black gas

*(repeat)

We got two tribes
We got the bomb
We got the bomb-yeah
Sock it to me biscuits-now

Are we living in a land
Where sex and horror are the new gods?
Yeah

When two tribes go to war
A point is all you can score

48. "Two Suns in the Sunset"
Pink Floyd, from The Final Cut.

In my rear view mirror the sun is going down
Sinking behind bridges in the road
I think of all the good things
That we have left undone
And I suffer premonitions
Confirmed suspicions
Of the holocaust to come.

The rusty wire that holds the cork
That keeps the anger in
Gives way
And suddenly it's day again.
The sun is in the east
Even though the day is done.
Two suns in the sunset
Hmmmmmmmmmm
Could be the human race is run.

Like the moment when the brakes lock
And you slide towards the big truck
"Oh no!"
You stretch the frozen moments with your fear.

And you'll never hear their voices
"Daddy, Daddy!"
And you'll never see their faces
You have no recourse to the law anymore.

And as the windshield melts
My tears evaporate
Leaving only charcoal to defend.
Finally I understand the feelings of the few.
Ashes and diamonds
Foe and friend
We were all equal in the end.

"...and now the weather. Tomorrow will be cloudy with scattered showers
spreading from the east ... with an expected high of 4000 degrees
Celsius"

http://infohost.nmt.edu/~nox/documents/history/Weiner.rtf

A paper entitled “Atomic Music” discussed the effect of the atom bomb on music in the US.

“This paper examines two genres of music, country/gospel and folk music, from the period 1945 to 1965. Using song lyrics as the primary source material and appropriate secondary sources, the paper attempts to answer these questions: What types of songs were being written during that twenty-year span? What attitudes were expressed? How do country songs, written about The Bomb, differ from folk songs about The Bomb? What were the political orientations of some artists who wrote and performed these songs?”

(Performed by the Kingston Trio)

They're rioting in Africa (whistling)
They're starving in Spain (whistling)
There's hurricanes in Flo-ri-da (whistling)
And Texas needs rain
The whole world is festering
With unhappy souls
The French hate the Germans,
The Germans hate the Poles.
Italians hate Yugoslavs,
South Africaans hate the Dutch...
AND I DON'T LIKE ANYBODY VERY MUCH!!

But we can be tranquil and thankful and proud
For man's been endowed with a mushroom-shaped cloud
And we know for certain that some lovely day
Someone will set the spark off
AND WE WILL ALL BE BLOWN AWAY!!

They're rioting in Africa (whistling)
There's strife in Iran
What nature doesn't do to us
Will be done by our fellow "man"

All Stood Still

The lights went out (The last fuse blew).
The clocks all stopped (It can't be true).
The program's wrong (What can we do?).
The printout's blocked (It relied on you).

The turbine cracked up.
The buildings froze up.
The system choked up.
What can we do?

Please remember to mention me,
In tapes you leave behind.

Chorus :

We stood still.
We all stood still.
Still stood still.
We're standing still.

The screen shut down (There's no reply).
The lifts all fall (A siren cries).
And the radar fades (A pilot sighs).
As the countdowns stall (The readout lies).

The turbines cracked up.
The buildings froze up.
The system choked up.
What can we do?

Please remember to mention me,
In tapes you leave behind.

(Chorus)

The black box failed (The codes got crossed).
And the jails decayed (The keys got lost).
Everyone kissed (We breathe exhaust).
In the new arcade (Of the holocaust).

The turbine cracked up.
The buildings froze up.
The system choked up.
What can we do?

Plese remember to mention me,
In tapes you might leave behind.

maybe it's on the list already. If so, sorry. Lyrics:

The eastern world, it is explodin’.
Violence flarin’, bullets loadin’
You’re old enough to kill, but not for votin’
You don’t believe in war, but what’s that gun you’re totin’
And even the Jordan River has bodies floatin’

But you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you don’t believe
We’re on the eve
of destruction.

Don’t you understand what I’m tryin’ to say
Can’t you feel the fears I’m feelin’ today?
If the button is pushed, there’s no runnin’ away
There’ll be no one to save, with the world in a grave
Take a look around you boy
It’s bound to scare you boy

And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you don’t believe
We’re on the eve
of destruction.

Yeah, my blood’s so mad feels like coagulatin’
I’m sitting here just contemplatin’
I can’t twist the truth, it knows no regulation.
Handful of senators don’t pass legislation
And marches alone can’t bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin’
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin’

And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you don’t believe
We’re on the eve
of destruction.

Think of all the hate there is in Red China
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama
You may leave here for 4 days in space
But when you return, it’s the same old place
The poundin’ of the drums, the pride and disgrace
You can bury your dead, but don’t leave a trace
Hate your next-door neighbor, but don’t forget to say grace
And… tell me over and over and over and over again, my friend
You don’t believe
We’re on the eve
Of destruction
Mm, no no, you don’t believe
We’re on the eve
of destruction.

69. Everyday is Like Sunday - Morrissey
Trudging slowly over wet sand
Back to the bench where your clothes were stolen
This is the coastal town
That they forgot to close down
Armageddon - come Armageddon!
Come, Armageddon! Come!

Everyday is like Sunday
Everyday is silent and grey

Hide on the promenade
Etch a postcard :
"How I Dearly Wish I Was Not Here"
In the seaside town
...that they forgot to bomb
Come, Come, Come - nuclear bomb

Everyday is like Sunday
Everyday is silent and grey

Trudging back over pebbles and sand
And a strange dust lands on your hands
(And on your face...)
(On your face ...)
(On your face ...)
(On your face ...)

Everyday is like Sunday
"Win Yourself A Cheap Tray"
Share some greased tea with me
Everyday is silent and grey

78. Robin Hitchcock does a great version of that...
changes a few words, He sings:

"High, on the promenade
etch a postcard
'How I dearly wish I was not here'"

Later...

"Share some EZ tea with me."

Greased tea, must be basically dried tea? that you mix with water? Some sort of instant tea thing, is my guess.

85. I've heard the interpretation of "greased tea"
as tea made with water contaminated with radioactive fallout, giving it a glossy, oily sheen.

Also, when I hear it, I think of the greasy coffee and tea that Winston Smith drank in 1984...it always coated his mouth.

76. the Specials "Man At C & A"
Man At C & A
Hall / Dammers
Warning, warning, nuclear attack
Atomic sounds designed to blow your mind
World war three - Nuclear attack
Rocking atomically - This third world war - Atomic sounds

The man in black he told me the latest Moscow news about the storm across the red sea
They drove their ball point views

I'm the man in grey, I'm just the man at C & A
And I don't have a say in the war games that they play

Warning, warning, nuclear attack
Shark attack to hit you on your back
World war three

The Mickey Mouse badge told the Ayatollah at his feet
You drink your oil you schmuck, we'll eat our heads of wheat

I'm the man in grey, I'm just the man at C & A
And I don't have a say in the war games that they play

Boom shakalaka boom
Nuclear nuclear, nuclear war
Warning, warning, nuclear attack
The boom never ban
Shark attack

79. "Planet Earth 1988" by the Ramones
found on the Too Tough To Die album.

Lyrics:
The solution to peace isn't clear
the terrorist threat is a modern fear
there are no jobs for the young
they turn to crime and turn to drugs
battle ships crowd the sea
16 year olds in the army
our jails are filled to the max
discrimination against the blacks

Planet Earth 1988

Russian and American war machines
will destroy mankind's dreams
they shoot their missiles in the air
they do not care, they do not care
guerrilla armies rule the street
no more Christmas or trick or treat
is this what the future will bring
I pray for peace more than anything

Planet Earth 1988

the solution to peace isn't clear
the terrorist threat is a modern fear
there is no future for the youth
there is no hope for the young
death destruction bombs galore
the rich are laughing at the poor
our jails are filled to the max
discrimination against the blacks

Planet Earth 1988

80. Let's drop the Big one Now! Randy Neuman!
Actually its called "Political Science"

From the album "Sail Away"

No one likes us
I don't know why.
We may not be perfect
But heaven knows we try.
But all around even our old friends put us down.
Let's drop the big one and see what happens.

We give them money
But are they grateful?
No they're spiteful
And they're hateful.
They don't respect us so let's surprise them;
We'll drop the big one and pulverize them.

Now Asia's crowded
And Europe's too old.
Africa's far too hot,
And Canada's too cold.
And South America stole our name.
Let's drop the big one; there'll be no one left to blame us.

Bridge:
We'll save Australia;
Don't wanna hurt no kangaroo.
We'll build an all-American amusement park there;
They've got surfing, too.

Well, boom goes London,
And boom Paris.
More room for you
And more room for me.
And every city the whole world round
Will just be another American town.
Oh, how peaceful it'll be;
We'll set everybody free;
You'll have Japanese kimonos, baby,
There'll be Italian shoes for me.
They all hate us anyhow,
So let's drop the big one now.
Let's drop the big one now.

83. 'Enola Gay' by Orchestral Manuevers inthe Dark
Enola Gay
Enola gay, you should have stayed at home yesterday
Aha words can’t describe the feeling and the way you lied

These games you play, they’re gonna end it more than tears someday
Aha enola gay, it shouldn’t ever have to end this way

It’s 8:15, and that’s the time that it’s always been
We got your message on the radio, conditions normal and you’re coming home

Enola gay, is mother proud of little boy today
Aha this kiss you give, it’s never ever gonna fade away

Enola gay, it shouldn’t ever have to end this way
Aha enola gay, it shouldn’t fade in our dreams away

It’s 8:15, and that’s the time that it’s always been
We got your message on the radio, conditions normal and you’re coming home

Enola gay, is mother proud of little boy today
Aha this kiss you give, it’s never ever gonna fade away

87. "Dumb All Over" by Frank Zappa
Whoever we are
Wherever we're from
We shoulda noticed by now
Our behavior is dumb
And if our chances
Expect to improve
It's gonna take a lot more
Than tryin' to remove
The other race
Or the other whatever
From the face
Of the planet altogether

They call it THE EARTH
Which is a dumb kinda name
But they named it right
'Cause we behave the same . . .
We are dumb all over
Dumb all over,
Yes we are
Dumb all over,
Near 'n far
Dumb all over,
Black 'n white
People, we is not wrapped tight

Nurds on the left
Nurds on the right
Religious fanatics
On the air every night
Sayin' the Bible
Tells the story
'N makes the details
Sound real gory
'Bout what to do
If the geeks over there
Don't believe in the book
We got over here

You can't run a race
Without no feet
'N pretty soon
There won't be no street
For dummies to jog on
Or doggies to dog on
Religious fanatics
Can make it be all gone
(I mean it won't blow up
'N disappear
It'll just look ugly
For a thousand years . . . )

You can't run a country
By a book of religion
Not by a heap
Or a lump or a smidgeon
Of foolish rules
Of ancient date
Designed to make
You all feel great
While you fold, spindle
And mutilate
Those unbelievers
From a neighboring state

TO ARMS! TO ARMS!
Hooray! That's great
Two legs ain't bad
Unless there's a crate
They ship the parts
To mama in
For souvenirs: two ears (Get Down!)
Not his, not hers (but what the hey?)
The Good Book says:
"It gotta be that way!"
But their book says:
"REVENGE THE CRUSADES . . .
With whips 'n chains
'N hand grenades . . . "
TWO ARMS? TWO ARMS?
Have another and another
Our God says:
"There ain't no other!"
Our God says
"It's all okay!"
Our God says
"This is the way!"

It says in the book:
"Burn 'n destroy . . .
'N repent, 'n redeem
'N revenge, 'n deploy
'N rumble thee forth
To the land of the unbelieving scum on the other side
'Cause they don't go for what's in the book
'N that makes 'em BAD
So verily we must choppeth them up
And stompeth them down
Or rent a nice French bomb
To poof them out of existance
While leaving their real estate just where we need it
To use again
For temples in which to praise
OUR GOD
("Cause he can really take care of business!")

And when his humble TV servant
With humble white hair
And humble glasses
And a nice brown suit
And maybe a blonde wife who takes phone calls
Tells us our God says
It's okay to do this stuff
Then we gotta do it,
'Cause if we don't do it,
We ain't gwine up to hebbin!
(Depending on which book you're using at the time . . . Can't use theirs . . . it don't work . . . it's all lies . . . Gotta use mine . . . )
Ain't that right?
That's what they say
Every night . . .
Every day . . .
Hey, we can't really be dumb
If we're just following God's Orders
Hey, Let's get serious . . .
God knows what he's doin' . . .
He wrote this book here
An' the book says:
"He made us all to be just like Him," so . . .
If we're dumb . . .
Then God is dumb . . .
(An' maybe even a little ugly on the side)

DUMB ALL OVER
A LITTLE UGLY ON THE SIDE

88. I've got two songs for you, Tucker. A nuclear war song, and a shipwreck
song; both by the same artist.

"Heart of Darkness" (-about a shipwreck-)

Last night I saw it there, shining in the dark again,
The light that all men seem to fear,
They say that sailors were drowning in the bay,
And people kept away,
Waiting for the riches that a wreck would bring,
When the morning comes,
And on and on that light returns again,
To haunt the ones who would not hear the pain;

I took the old path down, climbing over rocks and stones,
The place I knew when I was young,
And in my fear I had to carry on,
Where no-one else had gone,
Looking in the heart of darkness from above,
To the man inside,
I took my chance and set off for the light,
And started the journey of my life;

And in the darkest hour that light was calling me,
Through the doorway to another world,
And there below me I saw all the days of my life,
Till the moment I stood on the shore,
Worlds away, this was my destiny,
To be back here in another time,
And all around me I saw the faces that I knew,
Reaching out, "there is nothing to fear,"
Worlds away,
Come with me;

Last night I saw it there, shining in the dark again,
The light that all men seem to fear;

Come with me, come with me, come with me...

And "Transmission Ends" (-about a nuclear war-)

Looking out on a windy sky,
Watching seabirds as they fly,
On a summer day, on a summer day;

And now the sun is here to stay,
The winter seems so far away,
In the summertime, in the summertime;

Sitting here with my love tonight,
News is breaking from the south,
On the radio, on the radio;

Brother lead and sister steel,
Are playing out their final scene,
On the radio, on the radio;

And when you lie beside me soft and quiet in the night,
I often listen to the rhythm of your heartbeat giving life,
You are so precious to me darling, it will always be that way,
Until the final act is over,
Until every man has spoken,
Until every battle's done,
Until the day,
Transmission ends, transmission ends;

Waiting up for a shadow tonight,
Coming in via satellite,
From America, from America;

Whispers from some far-off place,
Are drifting into outer space,
From America, from America;

And when I see a shooting star go flashing in the night,
I often wonder if some other beings also see the light,
And are they picking up our signals,
As they spin of into space,
Until the final act is over,
Until every man has spoken,
Until every summer's gone,
Until every battle's done,
Until the day,
Transmission ends, transmission ends;

Oh don't let it happen, don't let it happen, no, no,
Darling, I'm always going to love you,
Yes I'm always going to love you,
Darling, I'm always going to love you,
Until the final day,
Until the final hour,
I'm always going to be with you,
Yes I'm always going to be with you,
My love always going to be with you,
Until the day comes down,
The man is on the radio,

"This is station planet Earth, we're closing down,
Transmission ends,
Station planet Earth is closing down,
Transmission ends, transmission ends."

92. Ozzy Osbourne Killer Of Giants
If none of us believe in war
Then can you tell me what the weapon's for
Listen to me everyone
If the button is pushed
There'll be nowhere left to run

Giants sleeping, Giant's winning wars
Within their dreams
Till they wake when it's too late
And God's name blaspheme

Killer of giants threatens us all
Mountains of madness standing so tall
Marches of protest not stopping the war
Or the killer of giants
The killer of giants

Mother nature people state you case without it's worth
Your seas run dry your sleepless eyes are turning red alert

Killer of giants threatens us all
Mountains of madness standing so tall
Rising so proudly it has nowhere to fall
This killer of giants
This killer of giants

Killer of giants threatens us all
Mountains of madness standing so tall
Marches of protest not stopping the war
Oh the killer of giants
Oh the killer of giants
Killer of giants
Killer of giants

96. "It's Good News Week" - Hedgehoppers Anonymous
It's good new week
Someone's dropped a bomb somewhere
Contaminating atmosphere
And blackening the sky
It's good news week
Someones found a way to give,
The rotting dead a will to live,
Go on and never die.

Have you heard the news?
What did it say?
Who`s won that race?
What`s the weather like today?

It`s good news week,
Families shake the need for gold,
By stimulating birth control,
We`re wanting less to eat.

It`s good news week,
Doctors finding many ways,
Of wrapping brains in metal trays,
To keep us from the heat.

It`s good news week,
Someone`s dropped a bomb somewhere,
Contaminating atmosphere
And blackening the sky,
It`s good news week,
Someones found a way to give,
The rotting dead a will to live,
Go on and never die.

Have you heard the news?
What did it say?
Who`s won that race?
What`s the weather like today?
(what`s the weather like today?)

It`s good news week,
Families shake the need for gold,
By stimulating birth control,
We`re wanting less to eat.

It`s good news week,
Doctors finding many ways,
Of wrapping brains in metal trays,
To keep us from the heat.

To keep us from the heat.

97. You'll laugh at this one...
...but when I first heard "American Pie," I was convinced it was about a nuclear war that happened in the midst of the singer's traumatic and painful high school experience. Kinda like the one I was having at the time.

Even though I know what the song is really about by now, I still interpret it this way when I hear it.

We don't want you we want your machines
United Nations and NATO won't do
It's just the red, white and blue

We got the neutron, that's the way it's gotta be
Survivial of the fittest is the way it's gonna be
