This ART is super special ART it can go outside and this ART fetches

American artist David Smith's large-scale metal structure 'Cubi XXVII,' seen here, has become the most expensive work of contemporary art ever sold at auction, fetching 23.8 million dollars at Sotheby's in New York(AFP/OFF)

1. That one I'm not so keen on -
It's sort of emotionally gripping and interesting, but not quite fully - I don't think it's balanced well, and it doesn't speak to me. It looks haphazard, like the artist didn't really care and just threw together a half-assed melange of styles to get the thing done and out the door.

I love modern sculpture, especially the large scale stuff, but this one doesn't speak to me at all. Even if it were a gift, it would go in an out of the way place in the yard.

10. But what IF he hadn't used those two blocks on the left side
it might have only sold for (dare I say it) $18.6 or GASP $18.4 MILLION!

Okay here is what I really need to know-Were there construction type guys working on this and the ARTISTE kept walking back from it...putting his finger to his mouth...shaking his head and saying "No more that just a smidge to the left"...

I would love to see the looks shot back and forth amongst the guys who actually constructed it.

I did post on that other thread. Good grief. IF you don't think that what is happening in France isn't GOD herself trying to warn us that some people have too much damned money then you are crazy. I'm investing in pitchforks and torches.

6. Glorified lincoln logs
That's all this shit is. People would buy crap in a bag if Sotheby's told them it was worth money.

14. David Smith was the most influential metal sculptor of the 20th century
One thing you can't get from this photo is the interesting surfaces of the sculpture itself.

17. It is very hard to find decent photos of his work on the Web
most are of very low quality.

His work is 3-D, obviously, and really needs to be experienced live. Smith's work is in the modern collections of the major museums.
