Let's say you are pushing 60
and you have about 150 pounds extra on your frame. Then let's say your supervisor tells you to crawl under a table to check on something.

What would you do? Does anyone know whether or not obesity if an ADA issue?

I posted this in the DU lounge cuz you guys are nicer. I might get toasted on GD.

1. You should really do something about your
age.

(on topic response: I don't know if obesity is covered by ADA)

:hi:

2. LOL
I know I should.

And I'd like to conquer that weight thing, too. I am a perpeptual weight watcher. I'll never give up, though.

3. ADA would be tricky here
Are you in an office environment? I don't have the extra weight but if my supervisor asked me to crawl under a table I would politely decline by saying something like "With my knees I don't think that would be a good idea." There's nothing wrong with my knees, but most people are too polite to ask what I mean (bad knees run in my family and I try not to abuse them, if you have to know.) Crawling under things isn't what I was hired to do. If you crawl under a desk or table in most offices you'll come up with dust and hair and other random small bits from the carpeting. I used to have a job where crawling under desks and move boxes was the norm and believe me, I know.

5. I'm a teacher in a computer lab.
We have a department that does all our installation, etc. But I evidently pissed her off because I reported a monitor as not working and GASP the plug (which is WAY under a table..we are talking a lot of crawling here) was loose. I had my student teacher do it but he missed it and she told me that I should have done it.

If I had done this, seriously, they would have had to get the fire department to get me back up. Hmmm. Maybe I should have. Interesting concept!

4. Is crawling under tables to check on things a normal part of your job?
I am not being flippant here; I really would like to know.

Also, were there any other people who could have done that instead of you? And I'm kind of wondering about the attitude/tone of voice of your supervisor when you were asked to do that.

I'm not sure of the ADA issues here, if there are any.
