So my mom called the city
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 05:19 PM by XemaSab
to see if there were any utilities under the strip between the sidewalk and the street that we should be aware of. We're going to dig it out, using a shovel, and replace the dead lawn with natives, pseudonatives, and butterfly-friendly plants.

Today someone came out from the City and now it looks like a gang has moved in! There's spray paint all over the street!

The Redding PUC has claimed our house as their turf!!!!

:(

ON EDIT: ROFL!!!!! Now SBC is tagging the sidewalk too!!!!!!!!

TOO FUNNY!!!!!

2. Wow! Thanks!
I always wondered what USA meant.

The first time I saw it scribbled in the middle of a street on one side of a line I thought kids were playing a game: This side of the line is the USA and the other is (fill in the blank--Russia, Iraq....).

3. Last week, we were standing at a convenience store...
watching a big tractor with a huge auger on the back lower the auger where we thought a water main was. We screamed at the guy, "Hey, don't you think you should call the city to have them mark the water line?"

The guy with the auger just kinda blew us off. You should have seen the water spewing when he puncture the main. It looked like Old Faithful. :D

6. Rather spectacular example happened here a year ago.
The water company was installing a water main, the storm drainage size ones that are at least 6 feet in diameter. A high volume aviation fuel transport pipe paralleled the new water main location. Or I should say paralleled it most of the way but there was one spot where it elbowed closer to the main. The elbow was either not marked correctly on the map or was misinterpreted by one of the contractors -- no one is sure. A backhoe clipped it and fuel started pouring into the new main where welders were working. The explosion was so strong that students at the high school a block away went into earthquake drill mode.
Five of the workers died and several others were critically injured. I could see the black plume of smoke two miles away. It was a very nasty incident.

7. That's horrible!
One time someone at my mom's company dug through a subterranean electric line and cut off power for the financial district in San Francisco.
