2. I saw it last night at midnight
And I totally agree!

I think it's the best screen adaptation yet of the series.

While at some points it deviated from the plot, and I thought that they could have included some critical stuff by making it 10 minutes longer, I thought it was very true to the sprit of the book and was fairly comprehensive in its treatment, which is more than I can say for the first three. (I thought POA was mostly true to the spirit of the book, but too much was left out of the plot, IMHO).

One of the reviewers called it "unsettling" and I agree... a lot of imagery is stuff that's going to live with me for a while.

:D

Edited on Fri Nov-18-05 06:36 PM by Evergreen Emerald
It was fun. The die-hards were there with trivia games and costumes. And I agree, the movie was good. My daughter was disappointed that Pigwidgen was not introduced. It certainly was one of the best so far.

9. Saw it at a noon showing today - I'll see it again soon--
The production values are very high for this one--just a richer, more expansive movie. Props to the make-up folks for terrific LV--I always had trouble picturing what he'd look like, but this is the LV I'll see from now on. And the dark mark over the tents was actually scary. The movie's about two and a half hours, but feels like 90 mins. or less. The acting was good all round, but Radcliffe has definately improved, much more natural. I might have to wait til Mon. to see it again, so the theater won't be full of kids!

14. Were there about a jillion previews?
Edited on Sat Nov-19-05 06:08 PM by proud2Blib
I will admit I don't go to many movies. Last one was the last Harry Potter.

But I was stunned by all the previews. Most were for remakes of movies. The Shaggy Dog starring one of the ladies from Sex and the City (huh?). A clone of March of the Penguins. A couple animated films that looked like too many other animated films. A commercial asking everyone to turn off their cell phones that was a parody of Finding Nemo. But my favorite was the remake of King Kong. It looks like King Kong, The Swiss Family Robinson and Jurassic Park all rolled in to one movie.

Are there no original ideas out there anymore?

And the previews lasted 15 minutes. Whatever happened to showing a movie and just a movie??

15. What was great about it....
Most was the fact that the imagery was dead on to what I was imagining while reading the book. The scene in the graveyard with Valdemort was dead on and we really loved it. We went this morning and we think it was the best so far. When we go to a movie and laugh, cry and get our money's worth, we're happy, and this movie did that in SPADES!
Oh, and was it just me or are the kids blossoming in their acting? I could FEEL Harry's grief when he returned with Cedric's body. Holy crap it was great!

16. I thought it was great. My wife and son, who read the book were somewhat
disappointed with stuff that was missing and some plot changes.

I argued that now that the books are longer, it is required that some things be left out.

I liked it mostly. I've been a fan of the whole Harry Potter franchise, which surprises me, because generally fantasy is not something that appeals to me.

The kids in the movies are growing up nicely. They do seem like genuinely nice kids.

But soon after this, they grow out of their niceness and become petulant and petty for a couple of years.

was my favourite book... I dunno about the movie yet. I'll see it again over TGiving and then decide.

First thing... tooooooooo much time on the Yule Ball. Not enough time on explaining everything at the end.

Other than that I liked it... Hermione is so hot now too!

On the bright side, we were spared the annoyance of Dobby. The next film (with Kreacher) is likely to be JarJar-ific.

Considering she is only 15 (April 15,1990)

24. Yeah, I've adored those two for ages.
I love the scenes (in other movies) where they are talking really fast and finish one another's phrases. Casting them was wonderful. I love how their lives are going -- creative, industrious, not exactly the same cut as the rest of their family.

25. Totally enjoyable movie.
I think I would have enjoyed Cuaron's handling of it better; I really loved #3.

I felt some scenes were a bit rushed. And a few of them dragged in the early part of the show.

Too bad they had to chop so much from the book.

29. I was disappointed in the previous films.
Fred and George just didn't seem as wild, although they were funny. Pretty stiff in the first movie, but they all were.

I love them in the books. I wonder how they're going to get the joke shop in book 6 without Harry's money.

23. The "Dark Lord" was distracting however.
It is usually distracting when the actor looks little like the public character as everyone knows him or her.

Everyone knows that Dick Cheney has a nose. He has no heart, but he had a nose.

34. ginbarn and I saw it today - 4 stars out of 5 (SPOILER ALERT)
Much better than the film adaptation of Prisoner of Azkaban, but at times it still seemed like a rush job. For example...

(please scroll past the next paragraph to avoid spoilers)

They glossed over how the fake Mad-Eye Moody managed to escape from Azkaban in the first place. When Sirius escaped in the last film, even the Muggle PM was informed. This time, not a peep. Am I missing something here?

OK, spoiler over. Here's what I liked about Goblet of Fire:

Daniel Radcliffe and Rubert Grint were excellent as usual. So was Emma Watson, who finally got her "Princess Diaries" moment at the Yule Ball. Michael Gambon is a worth successor to the late Richard Harris as Professor Albus Dumbledore. Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman were given more to do on the set, which I greatly apreciate. The Hungarian Horntail was a real hoot, as were the underwater critters. Screenwriter Steve Kloves made a valiant effort to trim out all the fat from the book while preserving the meat, and for the most part, he succeeded admirably. Director Mike Newell appears to be well-suited for the HP series; I hope they keep him.

4 stars out of 5. Check it. Respect.

37. Barty Crouch Jr.
Was thought to be dead, not escaped. On a visit from his parents, he used polyjuice to change places with his mother, who died in prison while still in the form of her son. It was not until he got home and the polyjuice wore off that his father realized what had happened and could not bear to inform the authorities. So that's why there was no uproar: No one realized he had escaped.

43. From what I understand, no
I haven't been able to see GOF yet, but I have heard that they didn't cover the escape. That's one of the problems of trying to condense a 700-page book into 2.5 hours of film, much of the exposition gets lost.

35. Excellent movie
It's too bad that the books are now so long and rich that some of the side plots have to be trimmed out to keep the films under three hours, but this was a ripping good film of my favorite book in the series. Great effects and a wonderfully English look and feel.

The kids are so natural and unforced in their roles. The Weasley twins were funnier than hell, and the girl playing Cho was adorable -it was easy to see why Harry has such a crush on her. Ralph Fiennes' Voldemort was genuinely frightening.

Five stars from this Potter junkie.

39. they should have made the movie longer
they had to cut out a lot of character development. they had to focus on the 3 tasks so Harry's interaction with other characters was severely limited. if I hadn't read the books I wouldn't have any idea what was going on. they could have made it longer. the left out house elves completely along with spew, and Malfoy was almost completely left out. not to mention Ludo. And Rita Skeeter had a diminished role. you have to wonder how they will explain the twins joke shop in the fifth movie along with Harry's interview.
and if they needed to cut so much there are some things they could have left out or shortened. they didn't need to have Ron dance w/ mcgonagal since it wasn't in the book. the moaning myrtle scene was a bit long. she didn't need to look at Harry's nether regions 4 (actually more like 8)times to get the point across, once would have worked. and the dragon scene was a bit longer then needed. He didn't fall off his broom in the book so there is no need to do it in the movie.
the scenes themselves were good but I felt that if I hadn't read the book I would be completely lost.
