Pecan - how do you say it?
I was going to make this a poll, but unfortunately, this Thanksgiving day I am unemployed, broke, soon to be homeless, and, sadly, poll-less.

So, tell me how you pronounce it and I'll tell you if you are right.
Also, tell what part of the country you are from.

Here are some choices:

pe kahn (hint, hint)

pe can

pee kahn

pee can (please do not use this unless you are in the car on the way to Grandmas house and the kid just cant wait)

Anyone who uses the "can" is obviously living with a substandard education and inability not to announce to the world their ignorance of their own ignorance.

it's just as bad as saying "EYE-talian" for "Italian".

Back in 1976 I was working as a temporary interviewer for the Texas Employment Commission (does anybody remember CETA?). Another temp. interviewer had just moved down here from Indiana.

We were discussing the Democratic primaries that year. She was a Birch Bayh supporter. I had voted for Fred Harris in the Texas primary, but went to the senatorial convention as a uncommited alternate ... prepared to commit to Carter. She said that Carter was ignorant (or some equally denigrating term) due to the fact that he had used the pronunciation EYE-talian in a recent foriegn policy speech. Simply put, she was wrong.

I hate them. My aunt had pecan trees and we used to have to "collect" them for her. Grrrrrrr. My brother enjoyed bouncing them off my head from a distance. Bastid. :-)
