Minor pregnancy vent...
I fell yesterday. Slipped on some ice and went down hard on my ankle, butt and shoulder. I'm bruised pretty much from tip to tail and I HURT!

I mentioned this fact to my mother. First words out of her mouth:

"Is the baby okay?"

"The baby is fine. I'm pretty bruised though."

"Oh well, so long as the baby is okay."

AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!! Am I simply an incubator? Okay, admitedly some pulled tendons, raxed muscles and bruises are not life threatening, but don't I deserve a modicum of sympathy?

Aren't I important?

1. Yes, you are important, too!
But you know, my first thought was "I hope the baby is okay!"

And then after that thought was, "I hope she wasn't hurt."

For some reason, I think that's just how people are...

Sorry to hear you are bruised up, though. As though pregnancy weren't bad enough, now you have extra discomfort and pain. And on a holiday, too!

Fuckin' ice.

2. It's a knee-jerk response, incubator lady.
I hope you are okay. Ice is wicked hard on any body part.

Take care, mom.

3. I'm so sorry that you're bruised up!!
Please take care of yourself! I think it's very natural for folks to immediately ask if the baby is ok. They see you're standing there and looking alright, so the logical (in their mind) response is just what you got.

be good to yourself today. Oh and WHEN is baby due? ? ? ?

6. I'm better today, thankfully...
I have a job where I can sit on my butt all day (the joys of working for yourself from home!)

I'm due at the end of May - date to be decided by the OB performing the C-section.

4. Mom Jeans: This Mother's Day, don't give Mom that bottle of perfume
Give her something that says "I'm not a woman anymore. I'm a Mom."

8. People should learn to be more considerate.

A pregnant woman, especially one who was recently injured, is not, in fact, less important than her fetus. Especially considering that the baby, you know, needs her to remain healthy and happy in order to finish gestating, be born, and thrive. Seriously, many, many folks in this world need a major tune up in their manners when it comes to women and pregnancy. Like--tomorrow.

9. No one will notice you for a few years....
If they're anything like my mom.

I don't think she remembered I existed until I went back to work...to make money for the kid, LOL.

It's always "you're an adult, you can handle yourself, go to the doctor if you don't feel well." Because the baby is the defenseless one, the one that can't fend for herself, etc.etc.etc.

All of which is true, but it does make you feel kind of down.

I'm glad YOU are okay too!

12. You most certainly are important!
I understand your feelings, though, very well. After my daughter was born, friends and family would call, and they all asked about the baby (that's fine, they should), but they NEVER asked how I was doing! Sheesh! Hello, I am still a person! I still exist! It can be frustrating, I know. Hang in there, Cat....and don't YOU ever forget you matter too!

13. I think your mother realized your fall wasn't life threatening. Except
potentially to the baby.
