So, what does "Yield to Ramp" mean to most people?
Is it just a sign to be totally ignored?

Does it mean speed up and maybe you'll get ahead of the bastards coming off the highway?

Because I've seen and been involved in so many near-accidents on this particular off-ramp, I was able to avoid yet another one tonight, but the PT Cruiser in front of me wasn't so lucky.

Mr. Big Black Truck With Blue Lights Underneath didn't even so much as PAUSE or let off the gas as he came barreling down the service road.

Ms. PT Cruiser realized too late that Mr. Big Black Truck had NO intention of YIELDING TO THE RAMP.

She slammed on her brakes, but not in time.

I veered off onto the shoulder to keep from hitting them.

Mr. Big Black Truck gets out of his truck and get this: starts screaming and cussing at Ms. PT Cruiser, who seems dazed and is bleeding.

I called 911 and asked that they make sure they send a police officer, too, this guy was getting more and more belligerent because SHE messed up HIS truck.

She was taken by ambulance, head injury. Something loose in the cab of her car hit her during the impact. Mr. Big Black Truck was arrested because he wouldn't stop screaming, cussing, or throwing his fists around.

I swear I wanted to go over there, take him by his ear, drag him over to the fucking sign and say "SEE THIS?"

WHAT do you think that means, asshole?

1. I am confused as to who was on the main road here.
Edited on Mon Nov-28-05 10:37 PM by nytemare
Was the truck on the entrance ramp, or the Cruiser?

The one on the main road has the right of way, so if she was entering, probably she is supposed to accelerate to the speed of traffic on the road, or just above so she can merge without disturbing the flow.

That is not to say that traffic on the main road should just speed up and not let people in. People are just trying to get out. No reason for people to be an ass.

If this is a case where the main road is required to merge to the ramp traffic, that would be unusual.

On Edit: I am thinking maybe the laws are a bit different where you are. Is this the case?

5. There is an interstate highway
and a service road next to it.

PT Cruiser was exiting the highway and I was behind her.

Black truck was coming up the service road.

There are big signs saying "YIELD TO RAMP."

Since the traffic exiting the highway is going a bit faster (temporarily we hope!) than the service road traffic, the service road HAS to yield the right of way to the people exiting the highway.

He not only didn't yield, it looked like he sped up. She tried to stop but didn't have enough time. From what I understood when I left, he was at fault and was ticketed. Her friend showed up and took my name and number as a witness.

15. Yep, sounds like the law is a bit different there.
Here for the most part, cars on entrance and exit ramps are required to yield to oncoming traffic.

Sounds like the guy was a major ass. When I am on the highway, and see a car getting on, I judge the speed of the vehicle to judge whether I should speed up so he can get behind me safely, or slow down to let him in, just depends on which way is the safest.

It is bad when you try to enter the interstates, knowing how to merge properly, (i.e. not going 25 mph and expecting to get on the interstate where traffic is going 70) and someone speeds up purposely so you can't get on. Usually, these assholes are right behind another vehicle, as well, so their speeding up doesn't get them much of anywhere.

Sounds like you will be a good witness. I hope that lady is ok.

2. I think it means "Survival of the Fittest"
Meaning that my lil Corolla is probably going to get it's ass kicked by some oversized underpenised SUV owner so I better just yield to them!

3. Did the sign say, "Yield To Ramp?"
I've never seen one of those.

I'm glad you weren't injured.

6. You've never seen a yield to ramp sign?
I see them around here all the time.

I explained to the first person on this thread the reason they are there.

And thanks! :hi:

11. I get it.
Where I am, there are usually Stop signs for the people on the service road to stop so people can exit the highway. Or, the people coming off of the ramp have a Yield sign to yield for the people on the service road.

To me, it all boils down to the fact that the people who design highways ARE FUCKING IDIOTS.

:)

16. That's how it is in most states I have been in.
Including the one I am in now. But, then, Jeb is governor here, so what do we know?

12. It's a Texas thing. In (some?) other states, the RAMP yields to the
service road.

I think it's a better idea to yield to the ramp, as people are coming off fast and my have to cross a couple of lanes to turn right. Plus it helps to keep traffic from backing up on the freeway from the exit during rush hours.

17. Makes some sense.
I suppose it depends on how much accelerating space the entrance/exit ramp would have.

I remember in visiting NH, the ramps were very short, but I seem to recall the entering traffic had to yield there, too.

8. Slow Down, Or Stop
Actually the reverse causes accidents here in Pittsburgh. People here see a Yield sign and think it means just stop. You'll have people stop at the end of a highway onramp then wait for a couple of minutes looking for an opening and gunning it. It's pretty scary to merge onto some of the highways here because you know when you get to the onramp you'll have to stop and pray.

10. Mr. Big Black Truck will probably lose his job
Which is fitting.

I have to admit, merging on a short ramp with a big truck during traffic is a daunting proposition at times. A nice lady in a station wagon almost killed me one day. But his behavior is inexcusable. And employers don't like it when their people get in trouble with the law. There's almost no way this guy will keep his license after an offense like this.

Edited on Mon Nov-28-05 11:38 PM by alarimer
I have nearly been in collisions when people failed to yield to me coming off the highway. I think people do not get what it means. Sometimes you do, in fact, have to STOP to let traffic by.

There is one other situation that I encounter every day where people fail to yield to traffic. It is a construction zone where one road merges with another. There is a yield sign on one road that is always ignored. People usuallt speed up instead. Dumbasses.
