I don't understand "thread locking."
Series question. When a thread is "locked" I'm assuming it means members can no longer post on it. But, if it's disagreeable enough to warrant locking, why isn't it just removed?

Or is it more like "pre-emptive" locking because it has the potential to get ugly?

1. It's just to taunt us.
If they deleted the thread, the taunt power would disappear.

3. If they weren't locked
there would be dozens of threads asking how and why it disappeared.

leaving threads up that are locked--well, it lets it speaks for itself.

All members can see why it was locked and you don't have posters trying to remember who said what.

Only really, really offensive threads should be removed altogether.

That's JMHO, though.

9. There are levels of unacceptability.
Lock is one. Delete is another.

And, having posted tonight on an afterwards deleted thread -- and with locks being in evidence -- I am confident of this (at least) being the case.

However, I do like the "taunt" angle.

Neener, neener.

11. Locked
Now the thread will slowly sink into the archives like a sleepy blue whale in the Japan Trench rather than vanish like a mosquito on a bug zapper.

Goodnight sleepy whale, sweet dreams!
