iPods - OK, folks, I need to know...
Do you have an iPod? If so, what size, how dense, and what color? Would you recommend them to anyone?

I'm completely new to iPods, but they intrigue me - so post away!

Simple to use, works like a charm. I love mine. But definitely get a good case for it. I take mine to the gym, so I have a hard case for mine.

3. Shuffle mode is nice.
I have the iPod Photo, white, 30Gg.

I was leary when they first came out, thinking why carry all that music around. During my world wandering years, I carried a few mixer tapes. But now I see it as my own radio station. Without adverts, obnoxious DJ chatter and songs I don't like. I tend to listen to more music from CD's. Before, I'd pop in a CD, and listen to a choice song or two, then switch to another.

4. Brand spanking new 30gig 5G iPod with video.
Edited on Tue Nov-29-05 01:12 PM by WeRQ4U
The sound quality is really nice and the iPod looks beautiful. However there are a couple knocks on it.

One, it gets scratched by EVERYTHING. Dust, Hair, Breath, Wind....You'll have to get a case for it if you want it to stay unharmed.

Two, the video is an OPTION. It is not a main feature. The process of converting a DVD movie to a resolution that the iPod can handle takes about 2 hours and then you have the privilege of watching an entire movie on a screen that is 2.5" wide. Not to mention that apple doesn't provide software to do it, and you'll have to find it on the internet. Also, the battery won't last long enough to allow you to watch the whole thing.

Three, it doesn't come with anything to charge it except the USB 2 cable. No wall charger, no dock. Nothing. It's a pain in the ass.

Four, Because you can have album art displayed and because of something else I can figure out, the interface on this firmware is much slower than previous generations of iPod.

Hope that helps.

EDIT: To add something here. One other bad thing about this new iPod is that the accessory port, which used to be on top of the iPod near the headphone jack, has been eliminated. This may not seem to be a big idea, but it has made MANY accessories obselete. Apple must have wanted to use their new Apple Tax against the third party providers, instead of making it backward compatible. THAT part was a bit shady. It is a lot smaller too, so many cases won't work either.

A black one. I noticed that it didn't come with a wall charger, so I purchased one ($30 ... seriously, WTF is up with that?). Thanks for the tip about it scratching ... will definitely tell him to buy a case. :)

14. You can charge it.
Like I said, it comes with a USB2 cable. But there is no wall charger included. You'll have to purchase that separately.

Also, firewire has been eliminated from this model as far as information transfer. And if you want to use it to charge it, then you have to buy that cable as well.

It's kind of a racket.

25. Me too
I love mine. "Radio Chookie" I was afraid it wasn't going to be big enough, but - it's kinda big enough. I may not be able to get my absolute library of music on it, but I am filling it with my fave tunes, so it is an ongoing total delight.

And its pink too.

But it's clear you love your hubby and he's going to feel very spoiled when he gets his big ass 30G :-)

8. I LOVE mine!
Before I had 350 cds, and now I have a 30g ipod with a color screen. I use in the car, I use it when I exercise, I can plug it into the stereo or television during parties. I'm also a wedding planner, so I've rented it out to clients in lieu of a DJ.

My favorite part is that you can organize your music into "playlists" which replaces all the mix tapes I used to make. Makes doing my annual "Best of" list way easier.

I agree on the case - they get scratched very easily. I have an incase with a side clip, which I like because you can ffw or change the music without taking it off.

17. I skipped the IPOD and went to a Sony Netman (1gig)
My nephew got a 4gig IPod and even that doesn't hold as much songs as my 1gig Netman does (although you do have to use Altrac3 compression not MP3 but it's easy to convert back and forth). Right now I have 603 songs on my 1gig player with what looks to be room to put about 20 more songs on it (Sony claims 695 songs and I got to 625, but I have a ton of 10min+ songs on my player)

My Netman looks like a nice lighter and comes with a clip so you can attach it. The display is really neat on it and it does have an FM tuner on it to boot.

I considered getting a Apple product but most Ipods were out of my price range except the shuffle. Only problem is I don't want to shuffle my songs, I want to pick a group of songs to listen to and know what I'm getting.

The main thing I'm saying is don't feel Ipod is the only product out there. I've done a ton of research on the MP3 players and found many brand names out there that are very competetitive with Apple and more reasonably priced.

BTW, my nephew's dad (my bro-in-law) loved the Netman. He was thinking of getting himself an Apple but after seeing my Sony is considering looking at that and some of the other IPod players out there.

23. I have the 20GB iPod
regular and the iPod Shuffle, which is about the size and weight of a small pack of gum. Both are white. The regular iPod holds more songs than I have, the Shuffle holds about 150. I use the Shuffle for exercising and on the subway (it was only $100, so I don't care that much of someone tries to steal it).

I absolutely adore them, and can't imagine being iPodless.

26. How do you do auto road trips with iPODS?
I got an iTrip for mine, which is like kinda okay locally. I still occasionally lose signal, which is a bummer.

So what the heck do I do when I do a road trip? Surely I can't be expected to be changing the FM channel as I go along....?

Is there a less painful solution for autos-- PULEEEEZE?

33. We love my kid's ipod, a LOT. We got the one that holds about 8 hours
of music, and it's worth every penny.

Everyone else I've come across who has another brand hasn't been as happy with the quality.

One tip, bearshare.com

Use the itunes to load the tunes to your pod, but use bearshare.com to find your music. Not that we would ever download music or films for free, no, we're not that type. We have an itunes account, but just haven't bought any music in a while.

35. I love my iPod so much, it is now my favorite "thing".
I have the 30gig Photo.

It is only about 1/2 full with 3800 songs on it. I still haven't finished putting my entire cd collection on it. It's a time-consuming process and as a grad student, I don't have a lot of time to devote to it.

But oh, how I love it! All my favorite tunes at my fingertips! And so many easy ways to organize them!

Like other posters have said above, I listen to so much more music now, stuff I hadn't dragged out in years. CDs really are cumbersome in comparison, and it was always a chore to load up the CD wallet for road trips. Now I have 10 days worth of songs in a device the size of a deck of cards!

I use a cassette adapter in my car. It works just fine and seems to be less hassle than the FM transmitter thingy that people complain about.

I would recommend one to anyone who loves music.

Its amazing to think that I would have to pull a flatbed truck to play the same amount of songs on a cassette/walkman as I have in my ipod.BTW battery failure is a problem with ipods. If your warranty has run out this company is offering longer life replacement batteries and a tool kit and
instruction video.
