How many DUers have ever driven Taxi?
Edited on Thu Dec-29-05 08:33 PM by eyepaddle
I can't be the only one, can I?

I haven't done this since I was in college more than ten years ago, but it was definitely one of my more "memorable" jobs--to say the very least!

On edit: yes this was inspired by another thread.

3. The first year it was like looking for buried treasure
you just had NO idea what you were going to find!

I had a lotta weird shit happen in my car, some hysterical, some scary, some aggravating, some just "weird: but nothing I know of can top a friends' experience. His first night on the job he had a famous (for the town) cranky old severely alcoholic woman die in his car.

I had a couple of passengers that I had to keep a close eye on, but damn, on the first night! Believe it or not he didn't quit.

If I may, where'd you drive?

2. Yes. 1970, Norristown, PA. Horrible clapped-out Plymouths that burned
two quarts of oil a day, no air conditioning, 7 AM to 5 PM shifts...blech.

5. I was 5pm to 3 am
unless they needed me until 6.

At least my outfit supplied the motor oil, and had their own in house mechanic to keep the cars maintained.

12. Yeah, we didn't have to pay for the oil either.
We'd not have made a cent if we'd had to.

The good deals were the runs to Graterford Prison, which were flat-rate, and we got to have a decent amount of time to eat lunch while they were visiting theri relatives in the slam...

I've put my time in on the crap jobs...though I think the taxi driving beat the cardboard-box factory gig.

6. Yes
Yellow Cab, Charleston, South Carolina.

Taxi-driver end of the road. I like to think of it as being 'Between Jobs'.

But oh one can learn a lot.

8. I was Yellow Cab in Winona MN
I remember thinking I knew what drunk was--it turns out I had no idea--until drunk got into my car and couldn't remember where it lived.

Or that one guy who didn't believe me when I told him we weren't in Bloomington (over 100 miles away).

And watching people desperately try to hook up on the ride home was generally priceless!

10. I have written stories
about my cab driving days. I progressed in the company to the office collecting 'rental fees' from the drivers. All in all a learning experience. Ray-gun days. Jobs were hard to find.

13. Houston, TX
Yellow Cab, Drove about three weeks when I had a gun stuck to the back of my head. After handing the man my meager fares, I returned the Cab and started waiting tables. Six months later, I left Houston for DC and never looked back.....
