Has anyone here seen the movie "Monster"?
I've never seen the movie, but back when it came out I saw a photo of the real serial killer (whose name escapes me) alongside a photo of Charlize Theron and I thought she looked familiar, but I dismissed it. Last night I was talking to my dad, who had watched "Monster" the night before with his girlfriend. He was telling me about the title character's horrid life and how it was portrayed in the film, then he said "and she lived right there where you are, in Orlando. She used to pick up her victims while hitching along the major roads there". I suddenly got a shudder; the ONLY time I've ever picked up a hitchhiker was on I-4 around 1990 (give or take a year) and she looked very much like the woman in the photo. A friend and I were driving from downtown Orlando to the Disney area, where I needed to go back into work to do some OT (I worked at the animation studio). It was late at night, but the traffic was heavy. In the headlights we saw a blonde woman in a tank top and shorts with he thumb out, walking backwards along the edge of the highway. "Jesus Christ! Pull over, that woman is going to get herself killed doing that"! my friend exclaimed. So I pulled over and backed up. The woman ran up to the car and jumped in the back seat. The moment she started talking I knew we had made a mistake picking her up; something felt very, very wrong about her. She said "you all going to Tampa? I've GOT to get to Tampa, my kids are waiting for me"! My friend explained that we weren't going that far, but we could take her someplace where she could call her kids. She looked pissed, and said "I'd rather be on the highway; why don't you just drive me as far as you can and let me out on the highway" We debated with her a few minutes (she seemed somewhat drunk, stoned,...I'm not certain). When i came to the Buena vista exit-one exit earlier than I originally intended to take-I quickly pulled onto it and drove up to a Waffle House that was right off the exit ramp. The hitchhiker was pissed, but my friend jumped out of the car and opened the door for her, giving her a couple quarters to "call her kids" (we both felt the line was bullshit). She cussed at us and demanded to be dropped off on the highway, but we convinced her to get out and drove away quickly. "That was NOT someone I'd want to drive to Tampa" my friend shuddered. We were both pretty shaken up; he said that warning bells had gone off inside his head the moment she got into the back seat as well.

Anyway, I told this to my dad and he became pretty alarmed; he said that the serial killer in the movie would use the same line about needing to get to her kids in Tampa. My father's hearing isn't very good, so I wondered if anyone else has seen the film, and if that indeed was a line that she used (I can't stomach violent movies, so I don't want to watch it myself)!

needless to say, I've never picked up another hitchhiker since.

her victims were all men, and if I'm not mistaken, all Johns out looking for a little something on the side.

5. I guess that would explain why she wanted to be dropped off
on the highway, and not at a safer, well lit area. I'm glad my friend wasn't driving alone!

I've seen the film and remember when she was first arrested; she was one scary woman who I sort of felt sorry for because she had been screwed her whole life. Doesn't mean I condone her killing people, but she never had a chance.
I'm glad you're here to tell the tale!

7. Ugh, that does look like the hitchhiker, but mine had
blonder hair-kind of over processed. It's hard to remember too much facial detail because most of what I saw of her was in my rear view mirror.

I'm just really glad that my compassionate male friend hadn't picked her up alone (and he would have, thinking he was rescuing a woman in distress).

8. I hope you share with your friend
that this could have been who you picked up, and not to do it again!
I used to hitchhike in my youth, and can't believe I just typed that,
but my mindset has changed, especially after your story!

12. I just called him tonight-he remembered her the instant I mentioned
her-plus her line about needing to get to her kids in Tampa "which I knew was bullshit" he said "that woman was just plain scary-impossible to forget". Then I told him about the movie, and what my father had said about it. There was a long pause and then he said "Oh my God-I never thought about that. I haven't seen the movie, but I think I've seen her picture-I'll bet that WAS her"!

I think he'll think twice about rescuing women in distress on the highway now. It's a shame that a few really bad seeds have to ruin a tradition of thoughtful acts of kindness.

11. That's a prison photo, so any hair treatment would be gone.
Yep, anyone can be a killer, even women.

9. Spooky
Do yourself a favor. Watch the movie. Theron's performance is riveting.

But if you don't I'll understand.

amazing job. I'm sure you know she received the Oscar for Best Actress for that film.

It's more of a character study than a horror movie. (P.S. I don't like horror movies myself.)

Don't hitchhike, or let your children or grandchildren do it, either. We allowed it back in the 1970s, but not now. Shit, I can't even talk to a child in a grocery or toy store anymore. We've lost our innocence and that happened way before 9/11.

14. Oh, and two Nick Broomfield documentaries might interest you
Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer (1992)
Aileen Wuornos: Life and Death of a Serial Killer (2003)

Keep in mind that Nick Broomfield may practice the craft of sensationalism.
