I've never seen the movie, but back when it came out I saw a photo of the real serial killer (whose name escapes me) alongside a photo of Charlize Theron and I thought she looked familiar, but I dismissed it. Last night I was talking to my dad, who had watched "Monster" the night before with his girlfriend. He was telling me about the title character's horrid life and how it was portrayed in the film, then he said "and she lived right there where you are, in Orlando. She used to pick up her victims while hitching along the major roads there". I suddenly got a shudder; the ONLY time I've ever picked up a hitchhiker was on I-4 around 1990 (give or take a year) and she looked very much like the woman in the photo. A friend and I were driving from downtown Orlando to the Disney area, where I needed to go back into work to do some OT (I worked at the animation studio). It was late at night, but the traffic was heavy. In the headlights we saw a blonde woman in a tank top and shorts with he thumb out, walking backwards along the edge of the highway. "Jesus Christ! Pull over, that woman is going to get herself killed doing that"! my friend exclaimed. So I pulled over and backed up. The woman ran up to the car and jumped in the back seat. The moment she started talking I knew we had made a mistake picking her up; something felt very, very wrong about her. She said "you all going to Tampa? I've GOT to get to Tampa, my kids are waiting for me"! My friend explained that we weren't going that far, but we could take her someplace where she could call her kids. She looked pissed, and said "I'd rather be on the highway; why don't you just drive me as far as you can and let me out on the highway" We debated with her a few minutes (she seemed somewhat drunk, stoned,...I'm not certain). When i came to the Buena vista exit-one exit earlier than I originally intended to take-I quickly pulled onto it and drove up to a Waffle House that was right off the exit ramp. The hitchhiker was pissed, but my friend jumped out of the car and opened the door for her, giving her a couple quarters to "call her kids" (we both felt the line was bullshit). She cussed at us and demanded to be dropped off on the highway, but we convinced her to get out and drove away quickly. "That was NOT someone I'd want to drive to Tampa" my friend shuddered. We were both pretty shaken up; he said that warning bells had gone off inside his head the moment she got into the back seat as well.
Anyway, I told this to my dad and he became pretty alarmed; he said that the serial killer in the movie would use the same line about needing to get to her kids in Tampa. My father's hearing isn't very good, so I wondered if anyone else has seen the film, and if that indeed was a line that she used (I can't stomach violent movies, so I don't want to watch it myself)!
