8. That's an urban myth

it actually comes from a Dutch word "fokken", which means (you guessed it).

Quite a lot of our English curse words come from the Dutch, due to the large amount of sea trade between England and Holland back in the early part of the last milleneum. The words first entered the lexicon through use by sailors-- which also contributed the phrase "you talk like a sailor" to our language.

My English teacher in high school told me it stood for "Fornication Under Carnal Knowledge," which he said was the title of the statute making it a crime for an unmarried person to have sex back in the day. When Van Halen came out with the "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" album years ago, I figured their title was just an incorrect variation on the statute title.
