"A-lee-TOE" vs. "Aleedo"
Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 04:12 PM by Patiod
All politics aside (and I do believe the guy is an absolute fascist) ---

Commentators and newsreaders are making me CRAZY going out of their way to pronounce the "t" in Alito, which no matter how professional the speaker (I'm thinking of Nina Tottenberg) and every one of them eventually "degenerates" later in the story into the regular American pronounciation, which is "Aleedo".

Okay, folks, this is America, not the BBC. We don't do sharp "T" unless it starts the word.

3. Whcih shows their lack of understandiing of Italian pronunciation
It's "ah-LI-to" in our mother tounge. Stressing the "t" stresses the final syllable, which is wrong, wrong, wrong.

4. It is annoying...
but then again I grew up in New Jersey where nobody pronounces internal "T"s. You can always tell when someone is from out of town just by the way he or she pronounces my home town, Trenton. Anyone who calls it Trent-ton as opposed to Tren'en, is definitely not from around there.

5. Jeet yet?
My FIL is a native of Newark and until I met him I wasn't aware that it was a one syllable word.

7. We don't have time for syllables
We New Jersians are much too busy! :P I have to say I'm guilty of that too, especially when talking to friends and family

13. Very true
Here in CA, I remember calling it "Jersey" and having one or two people act all confused, thinking I was talking about the place in England :-)

15. Pernickety me has to point out that Jersey isn't in England
It isn't even part of the United Kingdom.

Geographically it's closer to France than England. The Channel Islands are technically the last remaining possesion of the Duke of Normandy (who is also Queen Elizabeth II), they're internally self-governing.

Is that the same status as the Isle of Man?

on edit: Ah, after a little looking up I see the Isle of Man is a different beast altogether. How interesting!
