Am getting a dog. Need help/ideas for transport from another state
I'm in the market for buying a home, and have a feeling this will happen pretty soon. Once I own my own place, I can have a dog again.

A friend of mine in Oklahoma has been taking care of a 9-year old Queensland Heeler mix who is very sweet, has been abused in the past, and has basically been a foster dog, going from home-to-home all her life. My friend took her in for someone she knows who had to move into an apartment; the people don't want the dog back and will probably be in an apartment for several years to come.

I met the dog when I went to visit my friend OK last November. Her name is Seneca, and we bonded right away. But, i can't have a dog at the house where I;m renting. So, my friend is keeping her for me until I can have a place for her.

My friend is planning on flying out to visit me here in CA this coming June. Seneca would have to be crated and put in cargo to make it out here with her.

My question is:
Are there agencies/groups that will assist in getting a dog to another state without having to put it on a plane? Am sure Seneca would probably do all right for an air transport, but am thinking that IF there is another way so it's not so stressful, would like to check into it.

Thanks in advance for any ideas or contacts :hi:

4. If you call the American Kennel Club. They oughta help you....
Chances are if you send your dog in a plane in a crate, she'll no doubt be tranquilized and will be fine. No stress. Also, the horror stories you hear about dogs freezing to death in cargo are really extremely rare.

6. Am more worried about the stress

Dear sweet Seneca at some point in her life was very abused. Looks like someone kicked her a lot in the hips. Tranquilizing is always a good idea. Thanks! Have flown dogs in the past, and I know there is a temp controlled part of cargo where animals are placed. Just want to make sure Seneca has a trip that is done with as little stress as possible. :)

Thanks for the idea :hi: Am saving this thread for quick future reference.

7. Very few airlines will transport dogs
anymore. And the few who do have instituted new rules. Vets no longer recommend tranquilizers. They don't mix well with flying. You really need to check with airlines for their restrictions...such as, they won't ship animals during the height of summer or the coldest part of winter and won't ship short nose breeds (pugs, etc) as cargo at all.

10. American and Delta at least, will fly animals. We've used both.

We just took our dog from TX to AZ this last weekend, he went in a crate in cargo with no tranquilizer (he travels well).

We had one of our dogs shipped from Italy to TX (when we first got her) who did get a tranquilizer, she did fine.

There are generally temperature restrictions beyond which they will not ship animals.

If you have a tiny foo foo dog that fits into ventilated carryon size stuff, you can bring it on board.

In all cases it costs extra. American cost us 100 bux each way, Delta was about 50 each way for the dog.

15. Agree with the other poster, June in OK would likely exceed the temp
limit where they would ship animals anyway.

18. Here's a link with American Airline's guidelines:
http://www.aacargo.com/shipping/animals.jhtml

Here's an excerpt, the temperature requirements (there's also requirement for documentation of shot documentation/health certificate from vet)

Temperature Requirements and Restrictions

Warm-blooded Animals and Birds
For the health and safety of your animal, American Airlines follows the USDA guidelines for shipping animals during periods of extreme temperatures. The optimum temperature range for transporting most warm-blooded animals, including birds, is between 45 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit at the origin, destination and connecting cities (see Exceptions). Warm-blooded animals will not be accepted for transport using Expeditefs or Confirmedfs service if the temperature exceeds 85 degrees Fahrenheit at any city on the routing. Because of the high boarding priority of PPS, animals may be shipped via our Priority Parcel Service in temperatures of 85 degrees and higher. As long as the scheduled connecting time does not exceed 45 minutes, animals may connect in cities when temperatures exceed 85 degrees as well.

Snub-nosed/Brachycephalic Cats and Dogs
Snub-nosed animal shipments will not be accepted for any shipping method if the temperature is over 75 degrees Fahrenheit anywhere in the routing. Some examples of snub-nosed breeds of dogs or cats are: American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Boston Terrier, Boxer, Brussels Griffon, Dutch Pug, English Toy Spaniel, English Bulldog, French Bulldog, Japanese Spaniel, Japanese Pug, Pekingese, Shih Tzu, Shar-Pei, Himalayan cat or Persian cat.

Shipping Animals in Temperatures Below 45 Degrees Fahrenheit
If the temperature is, or is forecasted to be, under 45 degrees at any city on the animal's routing, a Certificate of Acclimation is required in order for your animal to travel. This certificate must be issued and signed by a licensed veterinarian and dated within 10 days of the shipping date. It must include the shipper's name and address, type of animal and to what temperature below 45 degrees the animal can withstand (but not lower than 20 degrees). Your animal may be accepted as long as the forecasted temperature is not below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, or the temperature noted on the certificate, whichever is more restrictive.
