Jesus Christ; DU has lost it's little Cyber mind
There wasn't a damn thing in that speech to get that worked up over.

And as far as Cindy Sheehan is concerned...when one gets invited to a SOTU address---and I don't give a flying rat's ass if Satan himself is speaking....one needs to dress fucking appropriately.

She looked tacky. Not tacky enough to be arrested...but, tacky nonetheless.

2. Dude, you don't need popcorn. It's pretty fucking simple
you don't wear cutoff jeans to an Episcopalian Church on Easter or Christmas...and you don't wear a t-shirt to a formal speech.

Christ, how hard is that?

3. I agree on both points.
She could have made a tremendously positive impact after the speech, because the media would have wanted to interview her. At that time, she could have said all that she wanted (hopefully leaving Chavez out of it).

Instead...she gets arrested and makes zero impact.

The speech was nothing extraordinary.

13. Well, I suppose she could have fit in a shopping spree in the 2 hours
advanced knowledge she had that she was even going. Then again, she'd have to leave her fellow protesters on their own just as the crowds were showing up. I thought she was originally there as part of a larger, organized protest. Then Woolsey invited her and gave he the pass to get in. Pretty sure the article said the invite came about 2 hours before the SOTU.

Edited on Wed Feb-01-06 12:14 AM by balzac
http://www.michaelmoore.com/

I'm glad Cindy didn't gussie up for that abomination-in-chief and I'm glad she got arrested as well.

BTW, the T-Shirt had a purpose. It had the number of American troops killed in Iraq. She did have an effect, as a result of her arrest. Bush had the mother of a slain soldier arrested because he couldn't face her in front of the nation. It reinforces his reputation as a coward.

One other point. Hugo Chavez rocks. He's the best political leader in the Americas. Evo Morales is looking really good himself. If only we had a Democrat like Hugo Chavez or Evo Morales.

I guess our tough Democrats get shot down by 'friendly fire' probably not much different from your petty criticisms of Cindy Sheehan.

the scene:

"And for anyone who thinks Cindy did ANYTHING to provoke this ridiculous act, I can assure you that she wore the same shirt she had been wearing all day--for her prebuttal--and that it was a last minute opportunity to go inside the chambers; she did not particularly want to do it, and did not decide until about 7:45 to do so.

She did not even think about what she was wearing, since she'd been in it all day long."

I can't sleep because I know a person is sitting in a DC jail as a political prisoner in the United Fucking States of Fucking America, so I get up and wander in here to try to detox from this garbage, and THIS is the first thread in line.

Holy, shit, Houston, we have a major fucking problem. We are through the looking glass. Up is now down.

When one who had been planning a protest against the SOTU address suddenly gets a last-minute invite to that address when one is already there and hasn't even been able to make a decision about whether one should attend said address until 15 minutes before it was supposed to start then decides to do so, one does not go shopping at The Gap for a proper outfit. One wears what one has and attempts to make it "respectable" with what clothing is available.

What in the HELL is this? Her choice of clothing was tacky? Geezus, lord, god. Where the hell am I?

54. Ok, here's what pisses me off about the arrest ('Looters' vs. 'Finders')
I've now read that another woman showed up with a "Support Your Troops" tee-shirt on - the wife of a republican congressional reprsentative out of Florida.

She too was escorted out for innappropriate behavior but SHE WAS NOT ARRESTED

To me this is the difference between "Looters" and "Finders"

There's the reference to Looters vs. Finders

Both women did the same inappropriate behavior yet why was one treated like a "Looter" and thrown in jail while the other was treated as a "Finder" and just escorted out of the room?

56. Yeah, that sucks
The only reasonable explanation I can think of is that perhaps Cindy was more emotionally involved in the expression of her views and resisted being escorted away to a higher degree than the congressman's wife.

Of course, my idea is purely speculation and it might very well be the case that cindy got shafted because her "inappropriate attire" was "bad" and the other woman got of easy because her t-shirt was "patriotic"

I'm sick of Cindy. I'm going to get flamed, but I really don't care. She's being counterproductive and making the anti-war movement look worse than it already does. I'm sorry she lost her son, but she has lost her grip on reality and she needs to get therapy. I know she's ya'll's hero, but I don't see anything redeeming in this woman for our side. She's making us all look stupid, and I'm sorry no one sees that.

62. From what I understand reading Cindy's version
somebody called out "protestor." or maybe it was "demonstrator."

So I don't think anyone was concerned that her shirt was tacky, but that she would somehow disrupt the procedures. I would assume somewhere there is a statute (there always is) that says no demonstrations during SOTU speeches.

I think they over-reacted. They should have just asked her to cover up the shirt and kept their eye on her. And there is no reason to rough up a middle-aged woman who is cooperating with you. That, I don't get.

65. Cindy Sheehan at a SOTU -- WTF -- Did this happen?
Beer has kept me occupied.

If she did wear an offensive tee she played into their hands perfectly. They didn't want her there. She got used. They wanted her to look out-of-place. They wanted the left to look stupid.

rove.use(cindy)

I'm to lazy to read so if I could get a quick run-down of what went on I would be thrilled..

74. I'd like to add my 2 cents on Cindy
Edited on Wed Feb-01-06 12:15 PM by jane_pippin
I don't agree with everything she says or does. I don't agree with everything anybody says or does. But that doesn't mean I'm not going to support her right to say it. I think she's incredibly brave to speak out, stage her sit-ins (or whatever you want to call her protests), it doesn't bother me that she wore a t-shirt with a message, and if she'd have screen printed her message on a nice, "classy" business suit, I'd have been for that too.

She's one person using her anger and grief to try to bring about change. It might mean making some people uncomfortable from time to time. Good. This country could use that once in a while. It might even mean breaking some regulations like, oh, I don't know, a dress code rule or whatever it was. Whoop-de-fuckin'-do.

Which is the more important principle? Freedom of expression, or a following a dress code regulation? A dress code regulation? Seriously?! I mean, the rule was there and like everybody else, she should be subject to the consequences for breaking it. However, I see no need to get my panties in a twist over it being broken in the first place either. It won't make me support her rights any less. And, I didn't know not looking "tacky" was now a prerequisite to being able to practice free speech, or to use the right to protest the administration.

She's just one person doing what she thinks is right, and she's doing it peacefully to boot. I support her right to protest and speak out, just as I would hope my right to speak out would be supported.

80. Tackiness aside...
There's all this outrage towards the administration that she was removed from the speech.

However, I can almost guarantee that the same thing would have happened had some outspoken Republican shown up at one of Clinton's last SOTU wearing a T-shirt with slogans about BJ's/Monica/impeachment/etc. They would have been asked to leave as it is not appropriate for a formal televised speech and would have been seen as a potential disruption.

Regardless of one's personal feelings or politics, this was the President giving the SOTU. Democrats need to learn when and where to stage and fight their battles; the SOTU is not the time to be doing that. Immediately following the SOTU -- that's a different ballgame.

All this did was provide another illustration of an "out-of-touch", "crazed", "shrill" Democrat for Rove and the corporate media.

84. Read Cindy's account before you judge.
She wasn't planning to do anything and in fact was asked to attend at the last minute. No battle was being staged or fought. She wore what she'd been wearing all day.

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/020106Z.shtml#

But for what it's worth I completely disagree that the SOTU is a bad time. Part of the reason liberals are not gaining ground is that so many of us are afraid to get our hands dirty and really fight. Really say what needs to be said. It's not pretty, it's not convenient, it's not appropriate. It's real and raw and it wakes people up. If we allow Rove and the corporate media to distort the truth and portray her as an "out-of-touch", "crazed", "shrill" Democrat that's our fault for letting them.
